Colliton
I kind of view it as a bridge contract during these rebuild seasons. Without any kind of inside knowledge, my opinion is Plan A is team improves into a contender with Colliton and they can extend him again if they choose. Plan B is wait 2 years, rebuild is over, and if an established top coach becomes available-it's not the end of the payroll to send Colliton packing. Kind of like what they did switching from Savard to Q even though it was mid-season?
While I wouldn't exactly call it Bowman's plan C, but plan C would be if team isn't improved/contending in 2 seasons, Bowman & Colliton are free to apply for work elsewhere.

I agree, if the Blackhawks had traded for him, with TBL retaining half his salary, that's potentially a great deal and Bowman should have at least thought about it over the summer. I don't want to seem too harsh. He's still a good player.
If we're talking about the Blackhawks taking on his full salary, then either keeping at $5M per year for all 4 years or flipping him at the TDL and the Blackhawks retain half salary for him to be a 40pt player on another team for 3 more seasons in order to get a late first or a second, neither of those appeal to me, despite him being a good player.

It's 4 years at $5M for Johnson's 30-34 age seasons. He's not that 72pt player one might remember from the 2015 SCF anymore. I don't view it as a flip at the deadline contract due to term since there'd be 3 more years left, even if they retain salary.
Besides, prior to Kucherov's surgery, rumor was TBL was shopping Johnson around offering a sweetener in the trade.

Toews Wants Out
I don't think Toews wants out or would quit on his team. If he wanted out he knows the best thing he could do is come to camp ready to play and try to start off the season strong.
As far as his mystery illness, it could be post-concussion syndrome as depression and lethargy are sometimes symptoms.
As a reminder, players over 30 with 10.5M cap hits are going to be really tough with the projected flat cap for the next 2 seasons. I think the salary retention would have to be closer to the 4-5M range, and look for picks/prospects, not young RFA's with multiple 30 goal seasons in their resume.

pld and more moves
I think it's great you would want the Blackhawks to trade for Dubois and Byram. Not so great on the value going to CBJ and COL though. Another GM isn't trading for Toews until he can play again. Probably not trading for Nylander either. I'm not certain CBJ is in full tank mode, so trading good players who at this moment will be available to play at the start of the season for players who will not isn't a good move for them.
I think Sakic is really happy with his great defensive core. I don't see why he moves Byram at this point unless it's to get a high impact forward with term and a reasonable cap hit that will help bring home a cup. Even then I don't think he moves Byram. He's got 3 years of ELC left, then RFA years...there's tremendous value in a promising young D with that many years of team control remaining.
If COL weren't contending, and/or were in cap hell, they might be motivated to trade away Cole or E Johnson? As it stands though, they are contenders and based on what I'm seeing on this site won't potentially be in a poor cap situation until the 2022-23 season.

2020 - 2021
Not a great year to be a UFA for sure. Hoffman on a 1 year deal makes sense. To even get $4M per year (cap space per this site as of today), he's looking at Rangers (Middle six/PP2 role at best), Blackhawks, Panthers, Predators and Blue Jackets...maybe Devils? I could be wrong but he doesn't seem like a Torts kind of player. The Panthers and Predators aren't great teams either...and all of sudden Blackhawks, get a top 6 role with teams focused more on stopping Kane, pot 20+ goals, get traded to a playoff team at TDL (couple playoff goals always seems to help players get paid) and try to cash in next off-season is a pretty good plan for Hoffman.
Blackhawks get to pretend they're trying, and try to get a pick or player at TDL.

The hawks have 5.2 in cap space, but that's with Seabrook and Shaw combining for 10.7 on the LTIR
Seabrook will most likely be ready for the start of the season and carries a 6.8 AAV where as SHaw will most likely remain on the LTIR with concussion symptoms.
So do the hawks need to make moves before Seabrook comes back?</div></div>
In looking at the teams with the cap space to offer sheet Strome at $5M-4 of them are potentially lottery picks (Sens, Red Wings, Devils, Kings) and I'm not sure Panthers, Predators and Blue Jackets are strong Cup contenders-no offense intended but I'm guessing those picks could be in the 15-25 range. I probably would let Strome go and take the 1st & 3rd for him. I do think Strome is a good 2nd line center. He's not arb eligible yet so the Blackhawks could offer him 1yr at $3M and worry about a 3-4 year deal next offseason.

I'd be surprised if those two didn't already have offer sheets on the table, and are waiting to see if Tampa can't move salary in the next few months before signing them.

I think the hierarchy for free agency is term ($$$$), and then winning. I'm not sure I'd go 7yrs/$7M for Hamilton, however I do believe that if the Blackhawks offered that and the Hurricanes offered 6/6M or 7/5M, yeah, he'd sign in Chicago. I'm not sure I understand the Kuemper trade either. This team is for next year, so the Blackhawks would be trading for one year of Kuemper next season, except AZ is more motivated to trading him now as this site is showing them over the cap at $84M, and I believe I read a bit over the summer where they wanted payroll to be closer to the $75M range? Plus this year would be more of the Blackhawks need for a vet goaltender.

It's a fair question. Ideally he's a 2nd Center, but Dach should be there now and the future 1C as of right now (assuming there is some sort of plan, that plan makes sense, and it pans out of course). Not even arb eligible this season, in the right spot his contract should have some surplus value to a team so there should be a taker.
My weird thought on it is what if Toews line starts games, but is more like a 3rd line with some extra offense (Kubalik-Toews-Shaw or Highmore?) while perhaps being used a little less than a normal "top" line, and the Strome line (Janmark/Suter-Strome-Nylander?) is really the 2nd scoring line and gets a few more shifts than a 3rd line might normally? To be honest I already forget what they were doing last season so maybe they tried something similar and it didn't work.

Karlsson isn't a great comparison, he had one year left under contract and would be seeking 10M+ on his next contract. There really aren't going to be a lot of comparables for trading Toews.
In my eyes it depends on how the Rangers see themselves as far as window of Cup contention. If they see as starting in the next season or two, then yeah, giving up a late 1st, Strome (are we sure they like him as a player?), Miller and Georgiev isn't too high considering none of those 4 figure to help much if the window is now...especially if the Blackhawks retained some salary. If the window starts in two years, then hell no.
If Kakko and Lafreniere are great, when their ELC's are up they're probably not going to settle for bridge deals. They'll want 7M+. The cap gets trickier and a GM has less margin for error. That's why I think the return in a theoretical trade for Toews depends a lot on how a GM will see his team's window.
All that said, no team really has the cap space for Toews or Kane right now and I don't think the Blackhawks will trade either one of them so all these posts are kind of for fun or at least for discussion.

Reversing one trade - Chicago Blackhawks
The Panarin trade was definitely a year early, although I suppose Bowman was trying to maximize the return by trading him with 2 years left...except I'm not really sure he truly got the most possible. I always suspected that the trade was also to hopefully get Toews's line going offensively by bring back Saad since Hossa was starting to look like a bottom 6. At the time a cardboard cutout could score 20 goals with Kane banking in shots off him (as long as Anisimov remembered to bring the cutout in & out of the zone to avoid offside penalties of course). While Panarin & Kane were magic on ice, Kane also made it work with centers on their last legs like Richards and Handzus work.
As far as shenanigans with Seabrook's contract and I do know many believe there are with Hossa's LTIR...the NHL does review the medicals on these players. We can speculate on how hard they squint in order to accept the LTIR. Reality is they are reviewed and I don't believe the league office particularly likes it when teams try to circumvent the cap. For example, they came up with the whole recapture penalty for contracts such as the one for Hossa's after they approved the contract.

the sad state of this team
I'm not certain I get the MTL love here, good young centers, but that D is about to get real old with Weber (signed at 7.8M through his age 41 season as a reminder) and Petry (33 in Dec, signed for 4 years at 6.25 after this season) and I'm not certain 13M+ for the next three seasons for goaltending is ideal. I do like a lot of what they have, I'm more confused by the "if only the Blackhawks had as good of a GM/direction on MTL' when I see a team with 3 long term 6M+ contracts for players in their 30's that I doubt will age well.
As far as the Blackhawks goaltending, I didn't get the Subban re-signing. I think they should have brought back Crow on the 2 year deal, let him be the #1 this year with 55-60 starts, and then do a tandem next year. As a fan I'm hoping the goaltending is surprisingly fine despite seeing it as potentially cratering the team if it's not.

Does this make sense
That's too much for COL to give up...I'll assume the Jimmy Vesey move would be a 3 team trade that I'm not sure the other two teams do?
As far as the anti-signing a UFA and trading him...at this point the UFA's still available might have to accept a 1 year deal and if the team isn't in contention they probably wouldn't mind a trade to a playoff team and hope to flash in the postseason. Galchenyuk just signed a 1yr/1.035M deal with Senators. I'm pretty sure he's hoping to score some goals, get traded at TDL and hope to get a better deal next off-season. Hoffman isn't looking for a 1 year prove it deal by any means, except most of the contenders can't do a 4-5M deal right now if he wants to be in the post-season. A one year $5M deal, maybe TDL deal when a contender might have a player on LTIR...it's not a terrible thought for him since at this point a 5x5M deal on a team not rebuilding seems unlikely.

Cirelli is an RFA, not a UFA. A 3-4 year deal for him is ideal because it provides some security and still allows him to reach UFA at a young enough age to cash in hopefully when the cap is starting to go up again. I don't think that his value in flat cap is in the 6M range, so 4.3 isn't so low.

Trading Toews and Kane Simplified
All these trading Toews/Kane trade proposals are fun to do. Some are more plausible than others. Few things though, they're both signed for "only" three more years and are still producing. Kane is still a top forward in the NHL, he's not Lucic or Ladd.
Please note that the Blackhawks have been rebuilding for a few years now, they just didn't call it that.
Most importantly, they're not trading Kane, Toews, Keith or Seabrook at this point for a variety of reason. Seabrook has negative trade value. Keith has some value, but not enough. For Kane and Toews, in a flat cap world no GM is taking on a 10.5M cap hit. I could be wrong but I don't see. There are a few teams with the space, but for example are they really waiving their NMC's to play in Ottawa with that owner? Insert the Discover "No" clip commercial here.
