Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 6 - Nearly Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>He won't though. And it is likely the end of this team as we see it. I get all the bluster about the stars and the PP but when we get 3 goals against every game, against actual good defensive teams with better goalies, what do we expect? <strong>Keefe wants to win games 5-3 instead of 2-1</strong>. Until he changes his philosophy and decides okay let's give Boston nothing. Wait for our chances and bury them. I am fine winning 2-1 and going deep in the playoffs. But that's not how it's going to go.
Just listen to Keefe's interviews. He's always saying "I thought we deserved a better result". Yeah it's been 4 playoffs of you saying that Keefe. It's pretty clear by now that it's not going to work. And he won't do a thing until there are 3 losses in the series.</div></div>
That's so unfounded lol. Leafs have allowed the 8th fewest GA/GP in the playoffs since Keefe's first full season, and it ain't because of stellar goaltending. In that same time frame (excluding this current playoff), the Leafs have allowed fewer high danger chances per post-season game than the Islanders, Stars, Vegas, Rangers, Panthers, Hurricanes, all of whom have had greater playoff success than us. Defensive play has never been our issue under him.

Seems like they need to split up the PP and go with two units. Assuming that Nylander is NOT back I'd go with:
Tavares (bumper)
Mathews (right wall)
Domi (left wall)
Bert (net front)
Rielly (top)
Marner (left wall)
Robertson (right wall)
Jarnkrok (net front)
Lili (top)
McCabe (bumper)
If Nylander is back then I'd go with
Nylander (top)
Matthews (right wall)
Domi (left wall)
Tavares (bumper)
Bertuzzi (net front)
Marner (left wall)
Robertson (right wall)
Jarnkrok (net front)
Rielly (bumper)
Lili (top)

Crazy that everyone and their mothers knew that the special teams (especially PP) were ass and would be a detriment come playoff time and NOTHING was done about it

One good player being out should not mean team falls apart. Yes Willy is vital but still team should not be die hard reliant
If he's out the series and they lose I dont want it to be the excuse. I want it to be a driving factor for change this offseason top to bottom</div></div>
Come on, how bad would it be for Boston if Pastrnak or McAvoy were out? A player of Willy's calibre is a major loss.

Thread:
Vegas Golden Knights signed Noah Hanifin (8 Years / $7,350,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>This contract is a pretty good example on how tax advantage is much smaller than most people think given his offer in CGY was for 7.5. Like yeah it totally exists but it isnt really anything to get antsy about and claim it to be a massive factor. 0.15M is roughly the gap.
Anyway, this contract seems in line with my expectations so I think it's fine. NH is a low end 1st pair D and he's being paid as such</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>doogiski</b></div><div>This doesn't make sense. The tax advantage is substantial and much more than $150k.
The difference for Hanifin each year making $7.35M in Vegas vs. Calgary is $640k take home:
Vegas (taxed at 38.9% from https://www.talent.com/tax-calculator?salary=7350000&from=year&region=Nevada): $7.35M -> $4.49M take home
Calgary (taxed at 47.6% from https://ca.talent.com/tax-calculator?salary=7350000&from=year&region=Alberta): $7.35M -> $3.85M take home
If Hanafin stays all 8 years in Vegas, the total take home difference between signing in Vegas vs. Calgary is $5.12M. This would mean Hanafin would have to play over 9 years in Calgary to take home the same earnings as he does in 8 years in Vegas.</div></div>
That's not how it works though. Salary is taxed where earned (so road games are taxed differently than home games) and signing bonuses are taxed based on residency (hence Auston Matthews pays Arizona taxes on most of his earnings). There are multiple loopholes, tax shelters, etc that players can take advantage of depending on circumstances.
Ergo, the real tax difference between Alberta and Nevada isn't going to be that big.

I was so nervous about what a Benoit extension would look like, in fact I was convinced it would be over 1.5m and was ready to move on. 3 years at 1.35m is an absolute slam dunk and I couldn't not be happier to have him around for another 3 years. Absolutely fantastic signing by Tre

I know a lot of people rightfully want Benoit back next season, but if he is going to cost more than 1.5m, Id just move on. Marshall Rifai is a prime candidate to replace him, he's only making league min and has the same kind of defensive acumen as Benoit. He is an incredible skater and a huge pest. That's a guy who deserves a shot in the NHL

BTW if its not already abundantly clear, Liljegren is definitely getting traded for a bigger name. Maybe a Buchnevich or a M. Pettersson. The focus on adding "playoff style RD" combined with Keefe's track record for not trusting Lili in the post season makes this seem super likely. Plus, he is due for a play raise this offseason that Im not sure we can afford. Id be alright with Lili for Buch retained or someone of similar value, but anything else seems iffy.
