I mean sorry to burst your bubble but we're not actually entering a rebuilding stage.
Gaudreau isn't the rental you're after.

If they want to spend to the roof
For the record, we're not exactly desperate to get rid of Lucic.
He's making more than the role he's slotted into at the moment but he's definitely found a role within the team that's needed (and lacking, imho).

What will probably happen
I think it's hard for me to get excited about any trade or FA signing without a sense on the Tkachuk and Gaudreau extensions.
Regardless of which way it ends up going it changes the trajectory of the team and decisions.
That said, McCabe seems like a solid fit regardless of what happens. Kind of want to bring Ritter back, if he wants to anyway.
And I'd probably want Schwartz over Coleman given there's a larger sample size of what he's bringing to the table.

Well, he was going that route because that's what the ask is from Buffalo.
Apparently they don't want a roster player with any kind of cap hit, only prospects and picks or promising young players.
I kind of feel like this is Adams trying to flex but I'm only working with what I hear.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alfie11</b></div><div>Pretty much thinking along the same lines. Also if we’re getting Eichel, I’d rather lose Zary than Pelletier I think. Pelletier is closer and an all-situations skill/2-way winger, we won’t need a skilled centre as much with Eichel/Lindholm for several years (and he’d also be more appealing as a trade asset). Similarly, I’d rather lose Dube than Valimaki, we can replace him on the wing with Pelletier, but it’s harder to immediately replace Valimaki, and Buffalo already has Power and Dahlin on the left side. I keep coming back to Monahan+Dube+Zary+2022 1st as the deal that makes the most sense, maybe with another asset thrown in (extra pick like a 3rd or B/C prospect like Zavgorodny or something).</div></div>
Having Monahan included in the deal is my preferred situation as well.
Buffalo may have their perfect trade in mind but I don't know that there's a team out there with 4 futures prospects (1st rounders, high end prospects, or young players) to offer up <em>and </em>cap space to take on that contract. It kind of feels like Kevyn Adams is making this deal tough on principle; doesn't want to be the GM that traded Eichel in his first few months.

It was just the Sportsnet guys talking about it, Pat Steinberg throwing names out there (I pulled from the names he mentioned): https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/big-show/july-26-a-wild-weekend-in-the-nhl-flames-in-on-eichel/
They talked about it being rumoured the Flames have been in and out and may or may not have an offer on the table for the Sabre's to circle back too if they can't get their perfect deal.

It doesn't.
Rielly is the only player in that deal that addresses a gap at the moment but if the price is Tkachuk then we'll gladly look elsewhere. Moreover, Rielly needs an extension that I don't imagine being cheap. Long term it's not a good option for us.
As for the other pieces, I'm sure they're fine players but tossing them all together in one trade feels like a cap dump to me given there's already comparable players on the Flames.
P.S. Please stop trying to trade Kerfoot to us.

So Now what
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alfie11</b></div><div>Gus is unusable in the top 4, he’s a complete liability at even strength. Not worth 3mil, maybe 1.5 to be a bottom pair guy. I could see us bringing in a guy actually worth around 3mil so fill in at 2LD so Valimaki isn’t just gifted the spot and has to earn it. We shouldn’t spend more than 2mil on a backup, luckily there are plenty of options (Reimer, Rittich, Raanta, Halak, etc.). I predict we add at least two top 9 forwards, hopefully at least one of which is an established 25ish goal guy for the 2nd line (ideally both are top 6 guys). Could also move Monahan for a top 6 C/RW as a shake-up, wouldn’t be overly surprised with a brand new 2nd line type of thing. I’m kinda disappointed we didn’t get Buchnevich or Reinhart, I would give up the price they received in a heartbeat.</div></div>
Buch would've been a nice pickup for sure.
As for Reinhart, it's hard to do a direct comparison prospect wise because it all depends on how Buffalo viewed the respective prospects. Maybe Tre made an offer with Wolf but the Sabre's didn't see him as we might.
Honestly, I'd much rather see extensions for Tkachuk and Gaudreau at this point than some random blockbuster done for it's own sake.

If Dumba is off the block that's fair enough.
But in terms of return, Bennett is no where near Monahan numbers. A second (next year) and a prospect is laughable for Monahan. And, for the record, a Monahan/Dumba flip is a negligible cap swing so that has no bearing in a trade like this.

Buffalo has to retain salary at that price.
Eichel wants out and the league knows this, it's not a great place to bargain from.

I think so? Eichel is one of those players that a GM would be obligated to chase if there was a chance.
Unless next season is a total bounce-back season I think we're at the end of the JG/SM/MG era. Tkachuk, Lindholm, Dube, Mangiapane, and Andersson are the new core.

I mean it effectively fills out the roster with NHL experience and leaves us with a serviceable cap buffer.
Then with all these players on 1-year deals we retain flexibility for next season around potentially signing Bennett, Dube, and Valimaki.
Plus, I'm already amused that we're slowly collecting Swedish players, whats a few more? :P

Perry won't sign for that contract and Bennett should be playing down the middle. It's going to be tougher than we think to move Ryan because look at the Nordstrom signing, teams can have quality guys for 700K this year. If I was given this roster I would look at the lines being
13-23-28
19-11-88
29-93-17
JN-GG-Leivo</div></div>
I mean if Weegar can play the right side this is a no-brainer. I wonder if Ryan wouldn't have to be involved in the Weegar trade for this to work? I'm starting to think that the last D-spot is going to get filled through trade given the options we have.
Seconded on Perry. Given our history I would imagine he'd die before signing with us :P

Treliving Works His Magic
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>Answer is because extension talks have broken off between MB and Gallagher's camp. The millions of morons out in the world automatically assume this means that Gallagher is on the market. Media m9r9ns suggest it so that they can get more readers. Other teams fans think it must mean Gallagher is unhappy and wants out of Montreal. Montreal fans think it must mean he is either being greedy or MB is severely lowballing him. The truth of the matter is probably some combination of MB trying to get the best possible deal for the team and Gally's group try I g to get the best possible deal for him. I assume MB would like a 5 year deal at around 6 Mil and Gally's side wants a 7 or 8 year deal closer to 7 Mil. A deal will be hashed out most likely as these things usually do get resolved. I just hope MB doesn't try and strongarm Gally like he did with Markov and Radulov cause that one worked out so well also.</div></div>
Ah, thank you.
Always love the fan perspective of you must <em>never</em> let a player go for nothing at <em>any</em> time.
As a fan who just watch Brodie sign with someone else, it is not fun but it is a reality of this game. Though it is not like there isn't going to be another time to re-sign Gallagher...
