Making Stamkos a Lightning for life
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>stop listening to that pod - the CBA doesn't allow this.</div></div>
Because Stamkos is 34 before the 2024-25 season starts the 35+ CBA rule would not apply to him
What is a 35-plus contract?
A contract is designated a 35+ contract if the players age on the first year of the contract is 35 or older (as of June 30 prior to the year of the effective contract).
35+ contracts that are two years in length or longer and:
1. Have a signing bonus in the 2nd or later year, OR
2. Are front-loaded
Will not benefit from a reduced cap hit regardless of the players location of play, termination, retired status, or a buyout. This rule was introduced by the NHL to prevent teams from backloading contracts past when the player was expected to retire. An exception to this rule is that a team will receive a $100,000 cap hit reduction if the player is on the 2nd or later year of the contract and assigned to the minors
I copied and pasted this from this website so I assume this info is correct
So if this is correct then because Stamkos turns 35 in February, TB can sign him to the contract mentioned above and not be liable for the cap hit if he retires after 4 years.

Making Stamkos a Lightning for life
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>the guy scored 40. pay him.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dan_the_Man</b></div><div>You're just pissed he's going to take below market to stay</div></div>
I was watching a Habs podcast called The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro, and they interviewed the Lightning commentators (I forget what their names were).
Tony was asking about how TB could afford Stamkos and if they thought Stamkos would sign with Montreal to be with Martin St.Louis.
They said there is almost zero percent that Stamkos will leave TB.
What they suggest that will happen is that TB will sign Stamkos to an 8 year contract that is heavily front loaded.
So it essentially will look like this:
4 years at $10 million followed by 4 years at $1 million for a total of $44 million over 8 years, which would give a cap hit of $5.5 million per season.
So after Stamkos plays the first 4 years he would then be 39 years old and have collected $40 million of his $44 million.
Stamkos would then only have $4 million left owed to him over the next 4 years.
He would then retire and TB would be off the hook for the remaining 4 years of cap hit at $5.5 million.
Stamkos could then take some sort of office job and get paid the remaining $4 million but it won't count against TBs cap.
Sounds pretty sketchy but seems like something TB would do.

Also Armia is also a plus 3 on a team that has a team collective +/- of minus 48 before tonight's game against the Leafs.
Being sent down to the minors woke him up
I agree he is totally worth his contract because of his strong defensive play, if he can repeat this offensive output next year he will be very valuable to the Habs
Other team's fans crap on Armia because he was sent down to the AHL but if they saw the way he has played since getting recalled they would know how valuable he has become.
That is why he is nominated for the Masterson Trophy

I'm just wondering is Andersson available?
Are the Flames going to rebuild their team this offseason or just do a retool?
I'm assuming that if the Flames are retooling then Andersson wouldn't be available.
Would Andersson's player comparable be Shea Theodore? If not what would you say his comparable would be?
If the Flames are rebuilding and a team offered Lane Hutson, Justin Baron, Winnipeg's 2024 1st and the Flames 2025 1st. Would that offer be more in the ballpark to get Andersson?

So what this boils down to is:
Montreal traded Poehling and a 4th to Pittsburgh for Matheson and 25% retention on Petry's contract
Then traded Hoffman and Pitlick for a 2nd in 2025, DeSmith and a career AHLer

If anything this drives his value up
Nylander should be happy every time someone gets paid what they are worth

Give the kid some time
I think 3 years from now we can judge these 2 moves
But
I think Newhook may be a better NHLer than both Drajcevic and Augustine combined
I also think we should have taken Michkov but I hope Reinbacher proves me wrong
But what I think doesn't matter or else Geoff Molson would have hired me instead of Jeff Gordon

Some cap dump that could be interesting
I read in the Athletic that the Habs will want to start the season with Price on the IR and not the LTIR
I don't understand the reasoning beyond something about it giving the Habs more cap flexibility if he starts the season on the IR for x number of games and then slides over to LTIR after the start of the season.
If the Athletic is correct with this report then we won't have the ability to take on any cap dumps
However if Hughes feels taking on 1 of these cap dumps is better than cap flexibility than it could happen.
Hughes has a game plan and I just hope he makes the right choices

It just seems like Hughes and Gorton has done everything they can to minimize the impact of their top picks. After all, the five guys taken immediately after Slafkovsky are all better than the former #1 overall pick. Then you have the Dach and Newhook trades where Montreal overpaid for non-premium talents. Franchise looks like a mess rn imo.</div></div>
Talk about the kettle calling the pot black!
How much did you guys pay for Romanov?
I don't follow the Islanders but are you telling me your team doesn't have any bad contracts?
And you know for a fact that the 5 picks taken after Slafkovsky are better based on what information? Do you have a crystal ball?
I'm sure your franchise isn't in a mess! Are they the favorites to win the cup this year? Are you even positive that they will even make the play-off this year?
Every team in the NHL has flaws, at least Habs fans know that we are in a rebuild and most have embraced that fact.

You take that and move on with a clean slate. There is no loss for Hughes and the Habs here. Eddy wasn’t this terrible hockey player because of his injury issues he was an unknown commodity and the Habs need to start moving bodies just like the Preds have done except Hughes actually got assets back here. At the trade deadline a retention spot is usually worth a 3rd so this means that the Habs traded Eddy for a 7th.
I think he is worth more than a 7th if he is recovered from his back injury.
So this is a loss for Montreal
But I understand why they did it --- they wanted to open a spot in the line-up for Xhekaj

5th OA will be Michkov or Smith.
The drop off after that is major.
So trading the 5th for the 14th pick would be equally as dumb as trading Bedard for the 5th OA pick.

By the math in this ACGM:
If Pittsburgh 1st (14th) + Boston 1st (28th) + Ottawa 2nd (44th) = Habs 1st (5th)
Than Habs 1st (5th) + Florida 1st (31st) + Habs 2nd (37th) = Chicago 1st
Or is the math in this ACGM a little off?

just some thoughts
If Michkov drops to 5th and the Habs don't want him (as I am lead to believe according to the media), then I like this trade.
We can then choose whoever is left of Reinbacher or Leonard with the 7th OA pick (which is probably what we would have done at 5th OA anyways)
Plus we get Hart in exchange for the 37th OA pick.
