Soul Searching Maybe
Bottom 6 again cannot score. Maybe instead of 1 yr @ $2mil they give him 2 yr x $1.05.... with handshake deal that he's not playing 22-23.....but they spread his 2021-22 cap hit/salary over 2 yeras.
Smith will get more money after the season he had.
Nuge wont get $7 in Edmonton. No way.
Kahun wont be back unless we strike out completely.
I thought Sweet Potato would get 2 yrs @ $3 - $3.5M then his offense cratered.... now I'm thinking $2M is more like it....... but maybe that 3rd year bumps it up to $3..... no higher than $3 though.
Thats an ok regular season D.....

What it Sounds Like Holland is Doing
those seem like all reasonable targets. Personally, salaries are too high for Barrie and Nuge.... too low for Nemeth & Armia. Both taking significant paycuts? Smith deserves that modest raise!
I think we need to revamp LW completely, but I wonder what the development plan is for Holloway with big, long terms deals for Nuge, Tatar & Coleman? Or do you play him at center behind 97, 29 and McLeod. Just a consideration. Big salaries with big term are tough to move - something to consider with those 3 new contracts on LW. Id start holloway in AHL, but he might only need half a season and then what?
D hasnt improved enough to think we'll challenge for the cup. Its a dilemma for me and i have no strong feelings. I like Barrie, Bear, Larsson & Bouchard........... but not enough room for all three until injury! I like Nemeth, One thing we lack on D (Stauffer says its coming) is wingspan. Besides Darnell, everyone is "normal" size. We could use a guy more of it and move Russell to 7th Dman.... with Broberg & sam in the minors to start. Guys from winning organizations is important - Oleksiak, McNabb.... i know, they dont grow on trees. Hard to get them on a 1 or 2 year deal too. But the D hasnt improved enough for playoffs.... maybe improve that at deadline..... i guess.
Jujar. So good on PK. Size. So bad on faceoffs. Defensive guy and completely loses man in game 3 on goal #3. ive mixed feelimgs about him coming back. Be more interested in Rightie center who can take draws instead of 29 on PK. Sutter? Glendening? Bozek? Bozek would be my pick on a 1 yaer, inexpensive deal and hope he doesnt contract Belanger-Turris syndrome.
All in all not bad..... have you added enough scoring in bottom 6 with Coleman & Armia? D needs significant upgrade on left side for playoffs.

Reasonable Offseason
If this is the answer, what is the question..... "What happens is Holland drops his phone in Lake Okanagan and never replaces it?"
So you acquired a winger for 97? He's a reasonable option at a reasonable price/term.
Moving koskinen for Elvis is okay. I feel you gave up too much and that their are UFA options that could be just as good - Ullmark, Mrazek & Driedger. But moving K's salary might be worth it.
You failed to solve the "We can only hope to not get scored against 3 & 4th line". Oh and we're small and not overly fast.
Only improvement on D is that Bouchard gets a year of development in the show.
All in all, if we start the season with a roster like this and $11M in cap space, I would consider it a disappointment.

What The Oilers Could Do This Summer
Haas, Ennis and Turris are not coming back. I like Ennis, but small forwards is a big problem for this team. When refs "let them play", our smaller guys have trouble getting pucks out and fighting through teams slowing them down. Turris can be buried in the minors for cheap, bought out or retire. Of the 3, maybe Haas has the best shot at returning. Expect some larger bodies coming in....

I would trade them pre-draft leaving Koskinen, Russell, Kassian and Benson available. Assume NJ doesn't protect PK & Severson. Big salaries, getting them off the books after Covid year wouldn't be a bad idea. Detroit can probably protect Lagesson also.

Story is Raanta cant stay healthy. His numbers when healthy are good, but 5x5 is a lot for a 32 YO goalie with history of injury. Better options.
Need a center to win a draw on PK and who isnt named Leon or Connor.
Man thats an overpay on Larsson. Gonna regret that one. 1 year too much. over $4 is too much.
Where's Bouch?
I'd be looking for size on the wings vs Caggiula.

I have no idea what you're implying by the last sentence.
I don't know Gusev at all. KH has a big decision with AA. Qualify him and risk a single digit goal scorer eating up too much cap, take him to arbitration and hope for a win or try to trade him to recoup a fraction of what he traded to get him. but then why would team trade when they can gamble he wont be qualified and they can sign him without giving up assets? I don't think Holland lets him walk. If he has to, he signs him for $3M for 1 year. But he wont get a raise and it likely wont be multi year.

Why does AA get a raise and multiple years? Gotta be gambling he'll get back to 30 goals? More than likely he takes qualifying offer or KH takes him to team elected arbitration hoping for a 15% discount on $3M. I think KH has that option?

PK was 19th. The left D is pretty pathetic. Depth player for a year for a draft pick that has almost no chance of ever playing an NHL.

Although, it might be a bit of an overpayment from Ottawa. Two 2nd rounders is a hefty price for bumping up 10ish spots from mid 20's to 14. Based on his last media availability, it sounds like he would for sure entertain recouping some picks to move back in the draft.
I also really like the Pittsburgh trade. Pitt fans might not because of the value though.</div></div>
<a href="https://flamesnation.ca/2019/06/08/what-does-it-cost-to-trade-up-or-down-in-the-first-round/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://flamesnation.ca/2019/06/08/what-does-it-cost-to-trade-up-or-down-in-the-first-round/</a>
Its usually a 2nd or 3rd round pick to move up (depending on how many spots). Considering this is supposed to be a deep draft. A second pick next year is not too far fetched. its only a single 2nd round to move up. I think Mat Benning is worth a 3rd round pick.... Dall pick is 2nd rnd, but really its almost a third rounder after the win tonight. I read Ott has to try to move some of its picks for players because you cant bring in 13 draft picks from one season to your farm team down the road. Not enough room. The author said to expect them to package picks to move up and/or acquire players.

I think if the market for an unsigned AA is poor, Holland resigns him and find cap savings elsewhere. He's not in the business of losing assets.

of course. JP's value is anywhere from a 2nd rounder to a bag of pucks. The sleeper is Kemp. Is he the next John Marino? I don't know, but hes a big RD in college who could step in soon. Thought 3 lottery tickets was enough and theyre cheap. Tampa is gonna have so much trouble. They cant trade for anyone established cause that would carry $$$. It has to be picks or magic beans.

They wouldn't. They'd hang up. There is no one ready to take on Bear or Nurse minutes. Broberg is a year or two away. Bouchard should get 3rd pairing duty this year. Lagesson might be a 3rd pairing guy.
Cap considerations, future roster, team makeup aside....you could argue the parts are equal, but reality is Edmonton would have no interest in this trade.

So bad. Nolan Patrick didn’t play this year due to migraines. He wasn’t invited to camp when the NHL resumed. So many questions about his future and you’re giving up 3 assets, including Caleb Jones. Almost every team in the league would like to have a Jones type for their bottom pairing - young, CHEAP, mobile and improving every year.Try again.

I personally don’t think JP has the hockey IQ. Yakupov 2.0. There’s a reason Columbus passed on him. We have 1 season to trade him or have him figure it out. Else we lose him in expansion draft and have nothing to show. I’d rather have a newer first round pick. We have too many players already clueless in their own zone. Forget which analyst on radio was saying both JP and AA are lost in their end. Can’t play both in bottom 6 and hope to win.
