That's true. I just don't think a wannabe contender can afford to have two young D making mistakes based from watching them both play with the Leafs this year. They both will be good NHL defenseman, but I think Sandin looked more comfortable in the NHL than Liljegren. Let Sandin play and find him a partner on the bottom pair, and let Liljegren marinate in the AHL until he's ready.
If both are ready to play and it won't impede the Leafs on ice output, all the power to them. Can use the money to sign Mikheyev to a higher AAV on a long term deal.

Not really sure on the UFA D market for this year, anyone on a 1-2 year deal under 2.3M could work.

Yeah Fabbro seems like he can fit the bill of with exactly the leafs need. He's strong defensively, but still has the offensive skills to be poised, make a good first pass and join the rush.

Big off season
I really think you're on to something with Danault + for Cirelli. It seems a little steep to me but the end of the day something like that could definitely work out. I would assume TBL would try to get an extension done with Danault before but he would be a perfect middle 6 centre for them. Wouldn't give up Kotkaniemi just yet but would add some picks and prospects, maybe Mete? Mete could be a cheap young D for them, wouldn't cost too much and an upgrade on a pick (90th to 39th) to restock after moving Foote, and both 1st rounders.
What about this?
Danault (agrees to extension with TBL, and 50% retained for next season) + Mete + 2020 2nd for Cirelli (agrees to $6.5M x 5 years with MTL) + 2020 3rd.

He is not the *ultimate* play driver. Yes he can drive plays, but if Marner isn't there, the Leafs forward group will still be successful with Matthews, Tavares and Nylander, etc.

I sure like to see the other 29 teams and their offer for Jones. Seems like only the Leafs have to traded 90 point player for two years of Jones. Think Jones is really going that much difference to the Leaf to the expense of trading Marner ?</div></div>
I think Jones is a perfect piece for Toronto's blue line. In my opinion the Leafs don't need Marner, he's a great player but he does have an expensive contract and is not the ultimate play-driver in the Leafs forward group. If the Leafs want to become a contender they need to improve their D-core and I believe adding a stud like Seth Jones dramatically changes their team outlook. They'll still be able to produce offense and score goals but this just brings them to another level considering their difficulties with defending.

How many franchise players does one team need? Nylander has shown he can be a first line player, and you already have $22M attached to Tavares, and Matthews. Why not trade Marner, free up some future cap space and get the exact type player in Jones (elite top pair RHD) and Bjorkstrand (top 6 winger) the team needs in return?

Different take on the Leafs D situation
I see him as a decent fit for the upcoming season, but he will have to waive his No Move Clause. He'll be a 34 year old UFA next year, so not sure where he'll fit in Dubas's long term plans. Would want to move Kerfoot, Johnsson, Dermott, etc. for a D who will become part of the teams core and not just a one year rental.

Dougie is great but he is due for a $4-5M pay raise. I think what makes Carolina's D-core is so impressive because they're all on pretty fair contracts, giving Dougie $10M is just gonna kill the surrounding team cap flexibility. Take him out and you already have a fairly solid D corps. Svech will probably get at least $7M on a bridge, Necas will get at least $5M if he keeps progressing. Also, you'll need to find and pay for a starting goalie. I say move Dougie for a really good top 6 forward with term + and your team is still comfortably set up for consistent playoff success.

Pietrangelo is a player that you find the cap room to keep. We have so many redundant forwards and a backup goalie making starter money.</div></div>
Faulk has that NTC though, wonder if he considers waiving it if he feels he's being blocked by Parayoko and Pietrangelo next year. Never understood the move but it seemed like they were thinking Pietrangelo wasn't gonna be there long term. Faulk signs the extension immediately, and has a rough season. Pietrangelo remans unsigned, has a fantastic season. Agreed, Blues need to find a way to keep him.

Opening Night-Flat Cap-No CBO
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>alwaysnextyear</b></div><div>In theory these deals make some sense, but there’s two problems.
1) Schneider hasn’t even been at a decent backup level of play for a couple years. I’m afraid he may be done as an NHL’er. Given that I’d rather keep Eriksson and try to sign a decent backup.
2) Demers blocked a trade to the Canucks when he was with FLA, I think because of the tax situation. If he gets shipped to VAN and is unhappy about it it could be bad for team morale. Otherwise I like that player swap though.</div></div>
True about Schneider, I would be interested if it's a physical ailment (hips, groin, etc.) hurting his performance which we've seen it a lot of veteran goalies. If it's a matter of psychological, the Canucks insert their faith and confidence into him, find him the right sports psychology consultation, give him the opportunity to mentor Demko and play 20-30 games a season. If it doesn't work send him to the AHL like NJD did, and find a backup for under $1.5M. Still better than Eriksson clogging up your forward group, they may even consider sending Roussel, Beagle down to the AHL eventually.
Good catch with Demers, didn't know about that.

That's fair, but I still think they may need some money to get to the floor, and he can still be effective in the bottom 6. OTT needs to gain at least $20M to reach the cap floor and just resign Duclair, Brown, Tierney, maybe a vet D-man. Majority of their NHL players for next year won't be making much. If not Baertschi, they'll need to add some other contracts.

Duclair signing seems pretty good, I think Tierney and Brown get a little more but not much.
- Don't see how/why Fleury waives his NTC to come to OTT.
- James Neal wasn't that bad last year to package their 2019 8th overall pick with him for a 6th rounder. Maybe they make a move to trade him when RNH needs his new deal.
- Marc Staal would need to waive his NMC, and Lias Andersson progress has been disappointing so I think that's an overpayment from OTT with Staal's contract.

Agreed, but you're also dumping Boychuck and Hickey's contract. Trading Wolanin would mean they're gonna move Pulock, Pelech, Toews, Leddy, Mayfield or send Dobson to Bridgeport. He's too good to be a 7th D, NYI wouldn't need him.

I would not spend the 6.75 on Barrie and target a cheaper option to help the top 9 (Toffoli will get more). Demelo, Braun, Gustaffson could all probably be had under $4M. Shattenkirk and Vatanen would be more but cheaper than Barrie.
Trying to get rid of Bennett, and Ryan is also a good option.

True, just saw MTL as a potential destination because they're on of the few teams who have the cap, Killorn is from NS and I believe its 16 team no trade, they need top 6 scoring help and saw Fleury as expendable with Romanov and Josh Brook. I hope Juulsen can get healthy.

Nick Robertson in 2 years
The Marner trade in definitely intriguing. Would rather for some guys signed with more term. Otherwise would almost say it's equal value because of the cap flexibility it gives the Leafs; strengthens their d-core and still get a decent top 6 forward back. The big issue with Marner's caphit is the Leafs have 2 other guys making more than him, Marner's contract alone is not a burden. Anaheim gets a superstar and Marner will take over and lead their team.

- I think Lavoie is a great prospect but still think he needs some time in the AHL before he's on the first line with McDavid and you'll probably need a new backup other than Rodrigue.
- I do like the Tampa Trade with Benning for Joseph.
- I would try to throw AA in the top 6 wing. Ex T6= (AA-McDavid-Yamamoto, RNH-Leon-Neal)
- Would try to package Russell+ Pulijavari + etc. for some cap space to get a solid third line centre (Tierney from OTT, Haula FA?).
- I would think Bear gets a little more on a 2 year bridge, but not by much.
Gonna be tough for Holland if cap doesn't go up.

Weegar would be a good add for Toronto. I also think this makes sense for Florida- they already have Ekblad and Stralman as RHD and will need to pay up for Weegar. Dermott is a solid 4/5 D right now, and would look good on their left side behind KY and Matheson . Johnsson can help the top 6 with the potential loss of Dadanov, and Hoffman. He's skilled, younger, has term and a low cap hit than those two guys.
I don't think Toronto needs to add. Leave as is or maybe a conditional mid rounder on either side if Dubas and Tallon want to dwell on it.
