I offered you a chance to move up 105 spots in this draft. I don’t even see how this isn’t a no brainier.

They’re moving up 105 spots in the draft. That’s worth 5M a year for 2 years. And they don’t have any better centers aside from Bedard.

That doesn’t have to be us when you already got Graves. And no shot that MP is overpaid. Not after the season he had last year and is just entering his prime. And even if you think MP is overpaid this year, what do you think Hanifin is going to look for in an extension? You’re robbing next year and the foreseeable future for a slight upgrade this year. That would be fine for a massive big name game changer. Not for a guy that’s only a slight upgrade. Especially since Calgary has no leverage due to the fact most of the team wants out and has already come out saying they refuse to sign extensions.

Actually, I think Carter would waive his NMC for a trade to the Hawks - under the condition that the Hawks will buy him out. Carter could then go wherever he wants.
At that point, a trade with CHI merely depends on what futures (i.e, picks and/or prospects) the Hawks would get in return. What is proposed here is pretty close, IMO.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fil97</b></div><div>thanks for your insights!
yeah I tried to get some cap space moving those two dmen and trading down. I'm really interested in understanding how you 'graded' with points those deals.
all in all I believe I put a better roster together hoping to contend for the cup. also I gave only two years to dumba even if I wanted to give him only one year cuz I wasn't sold on him either. do you have any suggestion? could maybe Shayne Gostisbehere be a better fit? or who else?</div></div>
I would try to get Tanev out of Cal. He is on the last year of his deal but he is a great shut down dman. It depends on what the Pens want.
Petry is a better puck mover and more about controlling play. Tanev is better at staying at home and preventing goals / shots.
Ghost has flashes of great play, and could be an option. I am a big fan of De Haan. His advanced numbers are dynamite. I think he would be great with Smith on the 3rd pair (though they would both be LHD).
I like Brody in Tor, Addison in Minn, OEL as a bounceback candidate. There are options if Pit moves away from Petry.
All of that said, I'm not sure I would. He has a decent chance to bounce back offensively. Defensively, he was fine.
For the picks value, I use this site. It seems to have good data.

Yeah - they were rough timing. Plus him AND Desmith getting hurt at the same time right before the playoffs makes it look even worse haha. I have no issues with keeping the same tandem, but also none with making changes. If they can get a good upgrade without spending too much or giving up assets - works for me.

There's no way I'd sign Hill to that contract. The league is filled with goalies that have a good stretch of play and then go bust.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fil97</b></div><div>yeah I guess I agree with you about the petry situation. and this team could be built the same-ish way even with petry instead of dumba. the only think I would say is that probably as a 6mil player I expected a bit more of him... I guess also injuries didn't help.
I'm trading down again in the rutta deal very similar to the petry deal.
yeah hill is a risk cuz who knows what he'll do next year, I signed him over the other guys that you mentioned cuz I think he was the better suited to be a starter. another idea could be trade desmith and have a varlamov korpisalo duo.
as for jarry I'm really tired of his injuries even if he is probably the better goalie out of all of these, and also read he was looking for a 6yx5.5-6mil contract which looks like too much to me.</div></div>
It definitely could - that's kind of why I brought it up. I think you're only a couple hundred dollars over if Petry comes back - if my quick math is correct. For sure, I can agree that his contract and AAV are still bad, even if he had a solid season.
You are trading down - I just think NSH would view Rutta as a cap dump. And therefore the payment of taking Rutta is moving up in the draft. so I don't think they would want to add the 2nd. That was the way I looked at it.
He could be - although he's never been a starter and the others have. I think Varlamov/Korpisalo could be a solid tandem, depending on the pricing of them. I get the Jarry and injury frustration. He's played the 6th most games over the past 3 years so I do think it's a bit overblown though. Oh that's definitely too much I agree - I would definitely not give him that. I'd try like 3x4.5 - maybe 5mil max. Anything more I'd explore other options.

that deal can also be proposed to sharks and blues somebody there accepts (sharks and 29th blues in particular)
schmaltz is probably a little overpaid but i think his play could have an even bigger impact than rakell had
honestly those 4 line look fire.
yeah on hill you are probably right, would you rather sign jarry maybe to a 2/3yx5mil contract, get another goalie?</div></div>
I don't really think Petry needs to have a bounce back year though. That would imply that he had a bad season this past year. Dumba is probably due for some kind of bounce back sure, but even his bounce back isn't better than Petry imo. If you were saving a lot of cap then I could see the logic - that's why I specified "at 5mil AAV". For 2RHD, Petry replacement? Not sure there's really anyone they can realistically get to be honest. And getting rid of Petry is going to be pretty difficult so I don't really see it even happening anyways. But in this scenario, if it does, maybe they could upgrade the 2LHD instead and sign a cheaper 2 RHD? Not sure. I just don't think there's a lot of 2RHD to be had. Maybe they can trade him for Marino(Hextall joke lol)
Would they? You're essentially trading Rutta for a 2nd, no?
For Schmaltz, I meant the trade price, not AAV. I think his AAV is fine. And agree, he would definitely have a bigger impact than Rakell.
Oh the lines look good - I'm not trying to say they don't. It's a solid team.
Assuming the choices are Jarry at 3x5 or Hill at 5x4.5 - yes I would definitely take Jarry. I'm not even against Hill, I would just hope the contract would be less term and a little less AAV. Only other UFA options I really see would be Anderson, Varlamov, or Korpisalo. A lot of this depends on what these guys would cost too, which we don't really no for sure.

Using the 14th overall pick to dump Petry just to give Dumba 5mil AAV doesn't seem like a good move to me. NSH probably doesn't accept, I think BOS and SEA might. I like Schmaltz, that's a hefty price, but I do like him.

CHI probably accepts. Not sure there are better or more affordable replacement options available for PIT, though. If the cap situation were different, PIT could probably get a decent haul for Petry. But, if PIT needs to move him now, this is probably the best you could hope for.

I like a few of the additions. Hall and Smith are valued about right. This team has 4 good lines.
I do question the trade downs.
So you have the Pens losing around 30 points to lose Petry. That is equivalent to a high 3rd. The value is probably a little high but then you replaced Petry with Dumba who had a worse season? Dumba is younger and had a little more offense last year but I don't know if he isn't Petry 2.0. I see that you only gave him 2 years, but I would estimate he wants at least 5. It might be better to ride with Petry, but it could be a personal call.
The other trade down was a valuation of -20 points or essentially trading a middle 3rd for Rutta. I don't think Nash will want to give up assets for Rutta, but I could be wrong.
All, in all, this would probably a net be a good outcome for the Pens.

It does for the sake of this trade though. What he's saying is Granlund can just be removed from the trade and bought out - and he left enough space to do so. Therefore you wouldn't have to account for any cost of dumping Granlund in the trade.

Right, that's what I was going for - might not have explained it well haha.
I think so at least - even at his age. I'd guess like 3-3.5mil personally. I know he's up there in age, but his production has still been great. Was a great starter and then became a backup not necessarily because he got worse but because Sorokin is a top 5 goalie in the league. His performance is still there. I'd be surprised if he went from 5mill AAV to anything under 3. But that's obviously just speculation and what I think personally. I don't know what any of the projection guys are giving him.

I do think you'll have to buyout Granlund as you mentioned because his cap dump would cause you to have to add a lot more to the trade. I like Schmaltz a lot - I think you probably underpaid a bit for him - but that might be covered by the overpayment on Vejmelka.
I think it's a really good team, personally I'd just keep Desmith, but still a really good team. You are going to run into some issues though with Carter not going on LTIR and Varlamov making more than that.

The $2.5M dead cap this season (vs $833k) would be more obstructive than the $1.83M dead cap will be in years 3 & 4 when the cap is expected to resume growing next season. If they are able to find a buyer, I can’t see the Pens retaining more than $1M because of the ease of the buyout hit.
