Nah, I'd take that trade for the Devils. We aren't competing this year and Graves is most likely not coming back when is contract is up (assuming we sign severson instead). Sure, we are thin this year if we trade Graves but we could also just sign a LHD in FA. After this year, we are loaded with LHD (Bahl, Siegs, Okhotyuk, L. Hughes, Shakir, maybe Topias Vilen).
I'd take a flyer on Barbashev and see if he can repeat his performance

Lets just play it safe
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>I am guessing the gap between Wright and Cooley is a lot closer than the gap between Cooley and everyone else. According to Central Scouting, it was "a two-man race for #1" between Wright and Cooley in January and "the gap has closed" in May. Dan Marr said that a number of teams scouts have Cooley ahead of Wright.
So, teams could be aggressive in moving up to #2.</div></div>
Yep, exactly what I was thinking when doing the trade.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smitty426</b></div><div>Why does AZ do that? Assume that Wright goes to Mtl. Our needs are RD and wing. AZ does not give up a 1st to move 1 spot for a guy (Cooley) who will be there at 3 anyway.
EDIT: Now if Mtl goes Cooley like here: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/3238724 then yes your play works! Order would then look like:
1. Cooley 2. Wright 3. RHDs/Slav</div></div>
I'm saying Arizona trades up so another team doesn't trade up with us for #2. If Arizona feels like another team might move above them and they really want Cooley, then that's why they'd pay that extra pick.
They definitely don't have to do that, but thats my thought process if Cooley is there #1 guy

I wouldn't give up on Smith after 1 bad year. Let's see what he can do with a defensive partner</div></div>
Not a dig at Ty, but the mistakes he made last year were on him, not his defensive partner. Just personally, I don't think having a better defensive partner will fix his mistakes. They were a lot of self-provoked mistakes and his poor skating put him in some bad situations.

Size on paper isn't an issue, but seeing some of these playoff games...our team would get killed. I just feel like we have size for size-sake. No one on our team plays a physical style of hockey except for our 4th line.
Goaltending is definitely the biggest problem, but its not the only problem to me. I'd like us to get a little older and more physical this offseason if possible.

If not then it would likely be zacha+Smith or bahl and mid round pick for boeser</div></div>
I feel like its harder to find a top 4 RHD then a top end winger though

The 1st Coleman got in return was in the 20s. The 1st that Calgary gave up for Toffoli will be in the high 20s. The devils 1st rounder this year will be top 5. Now bear with me, cuz i havent done the math on this yet, but i think a top 5 pick is way more valuable then a 1st rounder in the mid to late 20s

I think im hoping that in 23 we arent a bottom 10 team. But I see your point. I'm getting to a point where these top picks are frustrating to have, because it never feels like we take a next step.
Personally, I'd rather get players in their prime to pair with our core. But again, i see your point

I'd have McLeod over Boqvist at the 4C. Don't think Mac would cost that much considering his 4 year regression. But we definitely have one of the deepest prospect pools in the league.
But for the love of God, if we are gonna ever compete, we need to give Nico help on the wings man big time.

Tkachuk wants out of Calgary
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PaulieWalnuts</b></div><div>Not him but I probably wouldn't.
I'm lower on Chychrun than most meaning any package you'd have to present to Arizona (including Smith or no) wouldn't be worth it.
Uhm isn't Dunn quite good in his own right?
Anyway, Smith has been horrible this season, a sophmore slump for the ages.
I still think Ty has top 4 upside but he really needs to step it up next season.
Worst case is that Ty turns into another Will Butcher.
Hopefully a new coach can avert that and realize Smith's potential.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>He is better than what came out of the gates this year, for sure.
He was hurt in pre-season, lost his PP role to Dougie, and was deployed in different (less sheltered) situations this year.
So started season with some speedbumps.
Also, Lindy doesn't always deploy the most d-man friendly system (lets them chase in the corners, wingers don't do enough to block shooting lanes in d-zone).
When Smith is playing well, he is very confident with puck. And is great fit for a team using possession-style offense. Rarely makes mistakes and takes the puck away more, gives it away less. He closes gaps well, uses his stick to interrupt plays. His play-reading early in year was a real weakness, but has been better. Its usually a strength as he is a high IQ guy. He can get beat on transition and would ideally be paired with more of a stay-at-home type to cover for him. Not a big shot, but is very crafty with movement on blueline to get the puck through defenders and onto net.
Not ever going to be #1, but probably solid 2nd pair player.</div></div>
For me, he'll never be a Top 4 guy because his skating hinders him. He is so stiff in transition and he plays top-heavy. Doesn't generate a lot of power from his legs when he skates.

We are at the precipice of an enormous crossroads
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Stay patient. Smith is not Butcher.</div></div>
Idk I feel like he's a lot closer to Butcher than i'd like him to be. All the traits/problems Butcher had i feel like are also reflecting Ty's game. Both were below average skaters. Both Offensive-minded Dman. Both started solid rookie years and then didnt do much after. And both of them struggled defensively a lot of the time. The only thing with Ty is that he's young so he could develop, but i think if the skating is not there in the beginning, it's hard to adjust.
And i think another reason for me leaning toward moving him is that once Luke makes the jump, we have 2 offensive dman with him and Dougie. Do we really need Ty smith at that point? That's all im saying.
