Posted two other simulations where I went for Zucker or Bunting for top-6 LW instead. Honestly, I'm just fiddle-$%^&ing around with all the different options for funsies. That's all this is right?
I'd dig into the stats to see if he's just been absurdly snake-bitten, but I don't really care. None of these scenarios are actually going to happen lol.

Only way he stays is if Kadri doesnt work out and/or Johnson goes on LTIR</div></div>
Curious where that report came from. Not saying that they don't want to figure out how to bring Kadri back, but he's also looking to cash in. He's arguably been underpaid his entire career and as much as he'd love to stay, he's also said he's looking to be paid what he's worth. He was 3rd on the Avs in pts this season behind only MacKinnon and Moose, and arguably their most consistent player for the entire season given the injuries they dealt with. A lot of FA rankings have him sitting top 2-3 overall. Someone's gonna throw silly money at him. So whoever issued that report thinks that the Avs are going to prioritize paying a 32 year-old upwards of 7-9M into his late 30's when players traditionally fall off? If you've watched Sakic build this team the past 5 years, you'd know Joe doesn't make stupid decisions like that. The largest FA contracts he's handed out have been to Soderberg and Donskoi. MacKinnon, Byram, and Newhook are all about to need extensions. The Avs beat writers who travel and report on the team have been saying that they're prioritizing Nuke and Lehkonen. They want Kadri and Darcy back as well, but only at the right price. With the coming extensions and so many roster spots to fill with only $25M in cap space, chances are extremely slim that Joe pays 1/3 of that to Kadri on a long-term deal, which is what he deserves. Obviously they want as many of these guys back as possible, but cap space is limited so hard decisions have to be made.

Nuke's top priority for the Avs. They'll try to work it out with Kadri and Kuemper, but will depend on their asking prices. Kadri has said he wants to stay with the Avs but he won't be taking any discounts to stay, so he's probably priced himself out of what they can afford given all the FAs they have.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>glarson17</b></div><div>Olausson is the only decent prospect given here who projects as a middle six winger. Others are fringe nhlers really.</div></div>
I recognize that I'm going to have a bit of fan bias since I actually follow the prospects in the Avs system, but either I'd say we're gonna have to agree to disagree, or maybe we just have different definitions of "fringe NHLers". Annunen and Ranta are both absolutely "prospects" and have more developing to do to be ready for the NHL. They aren't sure things, but few prospects are and neither of them are anywhere close to reaching their ceiling yet. Both are only 22. Maybe we're getting spoiled by all the things Cale has accomplished at 23, but it isn't the norm for players to have that kind of success this early. Both of them have been entrenched in the Avs top-10 prospects list the past few years, including the years when that group included Byram and Newhook and had that Avs prospect pool ranking towards the top of the league.
Ranta has always taken a while to acclimate to a new level, but he's a hard worker and has a lot of the high-end tools you want in a current NHL winger. He looked a little lost during his cup of coffee this year, but no one who knows prospects expected him to stay with the Avs this year. You can see the physical tools but he's going to need some time to catch up to the speed of the game at the NHL level. That's not unusual, and big wingers typically take a little longer to develop anyways. He needs to learn how to play defense and away from puck at this level, and needs to build up his confidence, but the tools are there for him to be a middle-6 guy.
Annunen has prototypical size for what teams want in NHL goalies these days, and he has a quiet, controlled game like Frankie. He's dominated Liiga as a teenager, which is no joke. He's a big kid and has dealt with some injuries and conditioning problems the past couple of years, but when he's healthy and able to stay in shape he has potential to be a top netminder. If the pandemic hadn't derailed a couple seasons for him, he may very well be ready for the league. You may not have noticed, but Justus was our 3rd goaltender in the playoffs ahead of actual "fringe NHLer" Miska.
Yes, they are still developing and unrealized potential. Both of them have a ton of upside, but could also end up being busts. That's the name of the game with prospects. If they aren't traded I'm pretty excited to see both in Avs sweaters in the coming years and see what they can do for the Avs. I may be slightly over-valuing them cause i like our home-grown guys, but I also think you're underestimating their value and I wasn't just including them as toss-ins.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>The Avs adding isn’t really the problem here. The Canes already have Slavin and Skjei as their 1-2 punch on LD, and Pesce plays with Skjei on the second pairing. TDA I would assume gets resigned unless he starts asking for more money than what is on offer. And unfortunately the Canes FO has a history of trying to lowball guys, and it seems it’s happening again this year as well. I’m not sure how good Girard is on his off side, and I highly doubt he would accept being played as the 3LD, because right now, he doesn’t beat out Skjei and nobody beats out Slavin. The trade doesn’t make sense for the Canes positionally, whereas if it was a package for a goal scoring LW, Canes would be more likely to make a move like that. All I know is that it seems like it will be another off-season of change for the Canes, because we haven’t had enough of that the past couple of years.</div></div>
Yeah, makes sense. IIRC, Sam has played very well on the right side in previous years and was perfectly comfortable there. I believe he played on the right side any time he was paired with Toews, Graves, Cole, Byram, etc the past few years. It's actually more important to find him a solid defender to pair him with so he's free to go wheeling about a little bit, and since he's obviously on the smaller side. Appreciate you sharing the insights. I was honestly more scared of facing the Canes in the Finals than any other team from the East, TB included. That's a hell of a group and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Finals next year if you can keep it together.

Fair enough. I'm sure everyone that trades with the Avs is going to ask for Byram or Newhook. Was trying to do it with blue chip prospects and draft picks. Maybe add a second 1st rounder? Av might just not be a fit for a good trade partner since i doubt Joe would be willing to part with either of the young studs.

Not sure why you continue to spend time on this thread if you don't have anything to add.
Beaucage has an NHL-ready shot right now and is still right in the mix for a top-10 spot in the Av's prospect pool, which is far from barren. He's a risk-reward guy but far from worthless. MacDonald can play both D and F and his Corsi stats last year proved he can definitely be a contributor. If it weren't for injuries this year we probably see him playing all the minutes JJ, Murray, and McDermid have been eating. And at that cost, he's worth having in your system. Helm is obviously going to clear salary so the fact that you're thinking he's included in the trade as value just shows me that you aren't comprehending the Avs situation going into the deadline. I can buy your argument that a 3rd this year is more valuable than a pick swap next year, even if it's a higher pick, but honestly you didn't seem to want to come in and actually discuss so much as crap on the idea. So not gonna waste any more time discussing this. You don't like it. cool. Hope people are liking the teams you're posting.

You think he'd be ineffective paired with Newhook and Stastny? There are teams toward the bottom of the league that could have that as their 1st line. I think you also under-estimate that that line would be going up against other teams' 3rd lines. Worst case scenario, if it doesn't seem to be gelling you switch him with Nuke. Yeah, it might be overkill. With Paul's recent hot streak (7pts & 5G in his last 5 games) I'd expect there to be some demand from contending teams as we approach the deadline. We'd be off-loading Helms salary here, asking WIN to retain salary, our pick is conditional, AND I included getting a pick back. I didn't want to propose a trade that was just "here take a bag of pucks and give us all the value value". This is the year to go for it so I'm fine having one trade be a bit of overkill since there are other teams (FLA) that could be going hard as well.

Fair. It's not out of the question that Bowers could step in and outplay him right now. PEB wasn't terrible by any means for a 4th line guy, and I like the energy and leadership he brings. But it's not like he lit it up down there either so I guess at this point they may look for those small upgrades and not just ride with guys cause they're well-liked in the locker room. Given the landscape I'd thing you'd have to cut or buy him out though. Can't imagine anyone's going to give up even a low-level draft pick for that contract, and doubt Joe would want to send out any assets to move something that isn't back-breaking.

Tierney could be interesting. We could definitely use an upgrade at 3C and push JT to the wing. He sounds like a nice option and that's really one of the few spots left that can be upgraded within reason. Good find. Given Ottawa's pretty quick retooling, they're looking much more competitive this year. Maybe could explore expanding the deal and adding some assets to have Cole go there, and/or Donskoi?
From the sounds of it, Toews might be making in the $4M+ range, but I guess we'll see if they get something done before it goes to Arbitration. Might need to clear more cap depending on what his contract ends up looking like. And I would think he ends up somewhere in the top-4. Maybe Toews-Makar and Graves gets pushed down to the 3rd pairing?
PEB a scratch? Buyout?

Lol, settle down there killer. We don't know exactly which way the organization is leaning. I've had this debate with several others in these forums/on Reddit and I'm all for giving him another year to develop physically. I think he does need it based on what I've read. but if he kicks down that door and kills camp, or doesn't have any other options besides demolishing the WHL again, you may not give him enough of a challenge to continue improving and stunt him that way. He may be able to go play abroad, but none of this is 100%. You also have to think that at some point the kids gotta be given some time with the big club if he's going to mold himself into the elite guy we think he can be. Yes, we have a deep defense corps now, especially on the left side, but at some point he's gotta make the leap. End of the day I'm with you and I'd probably see Timmins making the team and find somewhere for him to develop, but we'll see what happens.

The Expansion Draft would get interesting though with too many young studs to protect, and it certainly makes the cap situation in the coming years much more hairy. can't expect landeskog and makar to take cheap hometown deals, or for Nate to continue to be paid that far under market value. Lots of ELCs on the way to plug in and make it close to workable but would make it super tight. but oh man, just looking at that group of guys all on one team... it might even rival what the Bolts were rolling out when completely healthy this year.

100%. In this scenario I'd even just the picks to move any of these salaries. After trading two 2nd rounders for Toews, and the Cirelli OS requiring the Avs 1st and 3rd, the Avs would be looking at skipping the draft entirely, which isn't a very palatable situation even with the amount of talent you're adding to the roster.
