Realistic 2nd contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jluqueSF</b></div><div>
My popular ideas for shedding $:
Zaitsev to OTT for Gaborik (then LTIR him)
Brown (in the hopes that Bracco / Engvall / Baptiste / 1yr UFA will fill the void) to SJS (Justin Braun; would facilitate another move) or EDM (2/3rd pick - don't want benning)
Kadri + pieces / Pesce + pieces (Nylander moves to #3C)
Nylander + pcs / Dumba + pcs (MM16 / KK24 / CB28 / TM42 play RW)
Wishful thinking:
after July 1 bonus paid to PM12; they can flip out the contract (if he wanted to retire) + a draft pick for LW short term size
its maybe wishful thinking, but just cause the team starts one way in 10/2019; doesn't mean that possibly by the new year 2020 that Sandin/Liljgren aren't part of the equation</div></div>
I think those are all solid moves. Zaitsev to OTT for their albatross contract and Brown for a decent depth blue-liner (or a pick that can help net the same) could fix things pretty efficiently.
I'd hope, if Kadri moves, it's in a move with MIN or NSH, where you can get a defenseman that'd move the needle on the top pair.
Ideal, of course, would be Marleau developing an equipment allergy.

He may have to go against that depending on what Marner signs for. The fate of a lot of players relies on his cap hit. Do you keep Nylander and are forced to move AJ or Kappy who are playing 2nd line right now while Nylander plays on the 3rd line and they will make Nylander's cap hit combined.

I'd argue worst case scenario would be both Stone and Duchene telling the Sens they want to sign extensions and then walking at the end of the season.

I would definitely entertain an Ekblad-Nylander based trade. Not sure Florida would.
I have 0 interest in trading away Nylander now or in the near future....but if you start tossing out names like Ekblad you've definitely got my attention.

Steen and Colaiacovo were dealt together for Stempniak.
The difference is that no one then, or now, ever confused Stempniak with being an impact player....other than a senile Cliff Fletcher who also signed Jeff Finger by accident.
Losing Steen was a terrible trade, but it did not alter the course of this franchise whatsoever.....not trading him a couple seasons earlier with Kaberle for Chris Pronger might have been the bigger mistake

Dubas is about as forward thinking a GM as they come, does anyone really think he's going to want to move a 22 year old with massive upside for a guy who is going to get paid 11 million a year from age 29-37? He's going to be a declining asset for most of his contract. This is just a speculative idea Eklund through out there for clicks, which is everything he does.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jluqueSF</b></div><div>Ok take out the leafs def. And then add sparks and Jeremy bracco. And delete Sustr</div></div>
So:
Manson+Kase+Miller for Nylander+Sparks+Bracco?
I like Nylander, and think he's very good, but I'm not as high as Leafs fans. I think he's an excellent hockey player, and I think that the premise of something along the lines of Manson+Kase, when it comes to comparing talent, could work, but I just don't see why the Ducks would go out and spend $7.5+ on a winger, and put themselves in a situation where all of the sudden they're digging a hole to fill in another one that probably isn't there to begin with.
I also don't think that Bracco is much of a prospect, and see Sparks as a good AHLer/mediocre NHL backup.

No, the Leafs D isn't anywhere as good as Boston. No one would argue that it is. Also, the earth orbits around the sun. Any other obvious facts we should discuss?

The jealousy and vitriol directed towards the Leafs right now is amazing. Truly enjoyable. Thanks for yet another post to reinforce the league-wide butt hurt going on.
I think the plan is to with the Stanley Cup this year and then fold the franchise. Go out on top.

for
Dumba + Zucker (rights) + Coyle + Ennis' cap dump

Connor Brown + Zaitsev + Liljgren + J. Leivo + Matt Martin $ dump + 2nd's in 2019/2020

I'm definitely not interested in option #2 here, but would have to do some serious thinking about your first counter offer. Swap out Nielsen for Eemeli Rasanen and we have a deal.

I cant see Domi signing a 4-year deal at that price! (although I think that's what he's worth). He'd probably much rather bring it to Arbitration and try increasing his productively with the Leafs and subsequently increasing his potential contract the following year.
Everything else is fairly realistic and leaves the Leafs with cap space to resign Matthews, Kapanen and Marner... I think... Might be tight...

While I like your idea of signing Calvin De Haan, he'll command more than $2 million AAV. Think more a long the lines of $4 million AAV depending on what the term is. The fact that he was injured for the majority of the year should not matter considering he's one of only a handfull of quality UFA defenseman available. I like the idea of trading Gardiner, but I don't like your deal there. I also firmly believe JVR will price himself out of Toronto. Although I prefer Dumba and De Haan to Gardiner, the Leafs have a lot of money tied to their back-end and that may mean moving Zaitsev, even though that would mean you are selling low on him. Tough decisions ahead for sure. Just a thought, but you might think of including Gardiner in a deal that would move the Leafs up in the first round of this draft into the top 10. Taking a shot at Evan Bouchard or Noah Dobson would mean getting an elite level right handed big-bodied hard-shooting defensive prospect that should be ready for the NHL by 2019-20, the year that any new deal for Matthews and Marner will kick in. It would save the Leafs a ton do pay out an ELC deal than say the $5 million plus to Dumba plus he'll need be resigned as well.

Extremely interesting outside of the box thinking. I love it. It won't ever happen but this type of trade is what this website is meant for. A few things-if anything Rubstov will be in AHL next year, I would play Saad on 2nd line to help his O production, D pairing are a little off
