What backlash. Everything looks pretty reasonable to me, except maybe Kapanen's new deal. Hard to gauge what his contract will be. He's on page for over 30 goals, but does that pace falter if he stops playing with Matthews regularly? I think he will get around $2.8 million AAV over 3 or 4 years. I don't mind the Stralman signing, but I think he gets more than that offered to him on the open market. Not sure why he'd take a discount coming back to Toronto. Also, I would suggest offering Justin Brazeau an ELC deal. Not sure why he hasn't signed yet, but I bet he lands somewhere over the summer.

If anything, I would be hating the Oilers. If for no other reason that the fact they've draft 1st overall how many times, and how many times did that work out for them? In addition to all their other high 1st round draft picks not named McDavid, Draisaitl or RNH. That should be a legitimate dynasty by now, but that team cannot seem to get it together consistently. At least the Leafs suffered for a cause and we're finally winning. It's a feel good story. Leafs are just hated because we have loads of money and use it effectively to build the largest scouting department in the entire league and load up contracts with huge signing bonuses :P hahaha!

One piece of backlash for you... signing stralman is probably not a good idea. If necessary a cheaper Dman to play bottom pair. We have 2 Dmen perfectly capable of playing top pair on the right side. Zaitsev and dermott have both to riven themselves as effective shutdown guys so far this year. This will allow you to offer kapanen a contract he will sign.

You have dished out a few illegal contracts... please keep in mind that rfa’s making under 1m are required a 10% pay increase.

I reckon Matthews, Marner and Kapanen are a tad underpaid

Matthews gets more ($12M at minimum), Kapenen gets more (probably between $2.5-3M) and Johnsson will probably be a bit more on more years (around $2M for 2-3 years) so your cap logic is out the window. Other than that everything isn't too bad. Not sure they'd be able to bring in Stralman though with the cap issues they'll be having unless they move out someone like Brown or Ozighanov. If they wanted either let Ozighanov walk or move him, they might be able to bring in Stralman on a reasonable deal and have Holl play third line d pairing which could work.

All in all your idea is right, your contracts and cap restrictions just need some work. Also, Leafs could be as high as $5.4M in bonuses that carry over to next season so that could come into play too.

depends on what you believe. if you think you have enough to win then go with it. If not then move one of those stud forwards and go get doughty or Ekman-Larsson or whoever on the blue line that can dominate a game.

This is evidence that "we can and we will" is not true. Everyone is making a little bit less than what would even be called a "team friendly contract".

The leafs really need to make a trade with the Oilers before Chia is fired..

Saw a post of what the Oilers would look like if Chia never made any trades... they;d be in much, much better shape right now

For cap reasons, to pay all players reasonable salaries and maybe a short term Dman, I agree with you. Nylander is traded

Matthews, Kap, Johansson all get more collectively about $1.5M more between the 3. Also, you have to give 10% raises to the RFA's at a minimum per CBA rules. Strallman gets slightly more also. And the cap is pretty much set at $83.5M.
