Trading the future for now
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Saskleaf</b></div><div>Lets just look at the past 4 years shall we?
First year no one even expected them to make the playoffs. It was good that they didn't get swept.
Second and third years they weren't the favourites, Boston was.
4th year was certainly inexcusable. They sucked that year. But every team that is one of the nhl's best has disappointed one year or another come playoff time. The caps constantly lost to Pittsburg before finally beating them and winning the cup. St Louis was last in the league, then they won the cup. Tampa got swept round one and next year won it all.
This year the leafs are first in the North. They will likely have to play the oilers, flames or habs in round one. They are clearly better than all those teams. They will make it past round one, just wait and see.</div></div>
Was going to use that Tampa example. Its a matter of playing well at the right time with the right players.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shakabakes</b></div><div>Ahh, the Toronto model for competiting in the NHL.
Clog up 50% of your Cap with 4 players (3 of them Forwards) and then scratch your head year after year when you can never get out of the 1st Round.
And this is while you give away your entire Prospect pool, and right before you look to extend Fox.
Way to close a competitive window before it even opens.</div></div>

Cirelli isnt worth 6m per. At this stage in his career hes worth around 4.5m, if he gets the point output higher then yea.
Sergachev isnt worth 6m either, he will probably get a contract similar to DeAngelo.</div></div>
gonna have to agree with you both. and 6 mil was kind of just a place holder for worst case contract.

Puljujarvi abdicated Edmonton because of a toxic management, and only considered returning because the environment changed. Lias just isn't good enough to play in the NHL: instead of growing through the AHL, he buggered off to Sweden.
I know the kid felt homesick and all too, and I genuinely feel for him and hope he's doing better, but that should never be a deal Edmonton considers.</div></div>
You're just plain wrong. The universe will end with the big rip.

IMO signing him long term would be better. Adds trade value for the future (assuming he keeps his pace) and we will have a TON (30 M) of cap space 2021-22

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>No. There's no trade to be made swapping #1 and #2. Kings won't want to give up enough and the Rags will want too much. If any trade gets done, it's only because one GM is getting fleeced and it will likely cost him his job.
If New York wants Byfield, they'll have to take him with the #1 overall. Otherwise they should take Lafreniere and be happy that they got the best player in the draft.</div></div>
You don't know that for sure, I've seen people say things with certainty on here before and be dead wrong. You never know.

That's true and 2 of the great players you listed are centers with excellent c depth past those guys as well. less loaded on the wings and rd which is part of the reason i proposed this.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafs_and_Sens_Fan</b></div><div>This ain't it... maybe Kakko + Shesterkin

But if they were interested in making a trade with NY, NY trading a starting goalie and future superstar scorer for a single draft pick would be absolutely mad.</div></div>
This is the reason i made this trade. Might have to add but is one potentially excellent player worth a bunch of potentially great players. Maybe with the kings being in a rebuild, it would be. Highly doubt it though, It was just a fun thought.
