Taylor Hall Selfish
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HawksFan28</b></div><div>I just don't see it and if that is true then there is something wrong with Edmonton as a franchise. Like I said, Hall put up 50 points last season, New Jersey missed the playoffs and Edmonton didn't, now the roles are reversed and the trade is terrible?
Hall's not going to become a ppg player or close to it overnight.... He's not very consistent. He's a top 6 forward having a career year... The best part is the Oilers got a legitimate top 4 defenseman - in the deal - not some "bum"... Even if Taylor Hall did become a perennial ppg player that still wouldn't make this trade one of the "worst" when teams have acquired star players for junk that never even played in the NHL.
Besides, Adam Larsson was what the Oilers needed, the trade is hardly "bad" Larsson is 25, Hall is 26 so there is plenty of time to determine who won the trade but in the end IMO it will be "fair"..
This trade is far to early to say who won it.... Next season the Oilers could be in the playoffs and the Devils could be out... Heck, the Devils could still be out this year.</div></div>
Career PPG stats for "Top" wingers in the league:
Marchand - .765
Wheeler - .777
Kessel - .807
Benn - .889
Kane - 1.008
Ovechkin - 1.118
Hall - .898
Clearly he's up there among the elites ( I left out guys that have only played 2-3 years for reference, like Gaudreau, Laine, etc.). This isn't a flash in the pan. He just never got the recognition for being as good as he was on an awful Oilers team.

Imagine
Sacrificed far too much in the defense/goaltending department.
There's only so much time on ice to go around for forwards. There's really no reason for any team that isn't an all-star/olympic team to have Crosby/Malkin/Tavares/Brassard down the middle, even if you can make it work under the cap.
Also, who kills penalties in this lineup? This team would win and lose a lot of 6-5, 7-6 games, etc.

Curious to hear new ideas for NHL
One idea I've always liked is making a players Cap Hit be based off of their take home salary after taxes.
Take Stamkos for example. Playing in Tampa with no state tax, he gets to take home a lot more of the 8.5 mill contract he's offered than if he signed in, say, Toronto or Montreal.
However, if we based it on their take home salary after taxes, then Montreal could offer him a higher theoretical salary, but Stamkos still takes home the same money and still counts the same against the cap.
Basically, it keeps the cap in place but doesn't punish teams in high tax markets.

He's 31. This deal will run until he is 36.
Pittsburgh may have some issues with him in the last year of the contract or so, but overall, not a bad price to keep him around.

Tell me: what are the chances in your opinion that Karlsson re-signs in Ottawa?</div></div>
Currently, if Ottawa continues on this path? 25%, maybe. Karlsson is going to want to go to a contender. Are you disputing that idea?
But yeah, I doubt he moves before the deadline.

Again... When Price signed his extension... He did so with the belief that their roster was a playoff contending roster at least.
Do you think that players don't care about the performance of their team with they are at UFA status?

Price re-signed. It's different with superstars.</div></div>
Montreal hasn't been great this year, but they were considered by most to be a playoff team with Price resigned. Also, goalies are handled slightly differently than skaters.
Again, what reason would Karlsson have to take a pay cut to stay with a rebuilding team in the prime of his career?

Why on earth would a player many consider to be the best defender in the league take a PAY CUT to stay with a team that doesn't appear to be anywhere close to cup contention?
Stamkos took a cut to stay with Tampa, yes, but Tampa was clearly one of the most talented rosters in the league when he did so. Ottawa doesn't have that luxury.

(OTT / PIT / VGK) - 3-Way Derick Brassard Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ricochetii</b></div><div>One of those questions I had without a precedent (that I could find).
Sounds like ...
Ottawa retains some of Brassard's contract and sends him to Vegas.
Vegas retains on Brassard as well, then sends him to Pittsburgh.
Then Pittsburgh sends pieces to both teams to account for the retention, as well as additional pieces to Ottawa for the original value of Brassard.
If that's what they tried to do, and the league stepped in, it seems like that falls under the guidelines of cap circumvention in some capacity.</div></div>
It's an interesting situation without precedent.
Let's say Vegas, in theory, sends their 2018 1st round pick to Ottawa for Brassard (50% retained).
Pittsburgh then sends Cole, Gustavsson, and their 2018 1st to Ottawa for Vegas's 2018 1st.
Pittsburgh then sends Vegas's 2018 1st back as well as, say a future 2nd or 3rd round pick, to Vegas for Brassard (50% retained).
It's' clearly a premeditated move to lower a player's cap cost, but I don't see how it breaks any rules that I'm aware of in the CBA...

Salary retention %
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fortier1985</b></div><div>Hi, looks like Brassard is going to be dealt to Pittsburgh via a 3rd team for more salary retention to fit under Pens cap. I know a team can't retain more then 50% of a player salary but can more then 50% can be retained be multiple team?
Like with Brassard 5 millions, Ott retains 50% 2.5m flipped to Vegas who retains 50% of the remaining 2.5m so i would leave Brassard to Pittsburgh at 1.25m? Is it something possible? Is there a max salary retention by multiple team?</div></div>
From my understanding, salary can be retained, at any percentage, on a player's contract twice.
So Ottawa could retain 50% of his contract in a trade to Vegas. His hit then becomes 2.5 mill.
Vegas could then retain another 50% in a trade to Pittsburgh. His hit drops to 1.25 mill.
Pittsburgh could not, however, trade him and retain further salary, or trade him back to either Vegas or Ottawa.

Probably still the end result. My guess is Ottawa is taking Gus and the 1st. Vegas ends up with Cole and maybe sends a low pick Ottawa's way. In return, Vegas is eating a little of Brassard's salary first.

I think what he's trying to say is, if you can't name your source or anything like that, then just don't even mention that you have insider information.
Even if you do, unless it's verified, it 1.) makes people not want to take you seriously (not a personal jab, just stating how it is). And 2.) is frowned upon by community rules/guidelines/mods.
