Next season with missing playoffs
Can't give up a mid-round first in a salary dump and run this back as your solution. Also doubt Smith wants to go end his career on a tanking team... he doesn't have formal trade protection but could retire prior to trade leaving the Oilers with his cap hit.

What to add
I don't think Spencer Martin has much in terms of trade value. He had a great Canucks debut but 1 game isn't enough to get GMs throwing picks for a 26yo minor league goalie unless he gets more starts to prove he can do it on a consistent basis.

Retool
I think the Oilers will try hard to not send the 1st just because of where we're at right now... think they'd be more willing to pay 2x 2nds which I still think is a fair return for Varlamov. Barring an Oilers-esque slide from on of the Eastern playoff teams (which seems unlikely), the Islanders will have to play better than 0.700 hockey the rest of the season to even have a shot at the playoffs. Sorokin is their guy and clearing $5mil in cap next year is good motivation.... and if you guys want to do us a solid for the Reinhart trade, that would be great.

turn it around
The islanders one is probably around market value and as is the Kane signing. The Dallas trade however doesn't make sense. I don't mind the idea of Barrie for Hakanpaa to have a more defensive presence and save some cap but Khudobin has been god awful this year and has another year to run on his contract... ends up being a buried contract next year so Skinner can be back-up as he's no longer waiver exempt.

The Oilers can't fit that Anderson contract long term... Already have McDavid/Draistaitl/Nuge/Hyman locked up long term over $5mil AAV. Any cap they can clear out should address the defensive side.

I wouldn't say he's "behind" Cody Ceci. They have different usages... Ceci generally gets the tougher defensive assignments. Bouchard is moreso against Barrie for ice time. Should get a better look on the PP with Barrie out and from what I saw in Calgary, there could be some real upside there. Barrie is a good distributor but no shot threat, Bouchard adds another dimension to that PP. You have the Drai one time threat down low, the Bouch Bomb from the point (not necessarily hard but he's great at getting it through traffic), McDavid roaming, Nuge to make the right passes once healthy, Hyman/JP with the netfront presence.

He's an RFA that Edmonton can't afford to sign is the biggest issue. You'd get assets if you dealt his rights but the Oilers are still much better off using that 1st on D or G.

Weird to make these trades all retroactive to 2002 when these guys weren't even in the league.
Yes, the Oilers need a goalie but Barrie plus a 1st to obtain a back-up who is on LTIR for the next 8 weeks makes zero sense.

Fleury is only a 10 team NTC. If it were submitted at the beginning of the season, the Oilers might not be on it. If it was submitted recently there'd be zero chance of the Oiler getting him.

"Helping" the Oilers by fleecing them of their last years 1st and a 2nd for a back-up goalie and an inconsequential cap dump. Allen is at most worth a 3rd with nothing retained.

I'd do that from an Oilers perspective if Ullmark would be willing to waive (which I doubt). Also doubt Boston would willingly take back Kassian.

We are at the precipice of an enormous crossroads
I'm intrigued from an Oilers perspective. Price is definitely steep, but it always will be for a young starter. Would have to have confidence in your pro scouts to know if this year is a blip or the beginning of a trend.... and confidence is something I don't have in the Oilers organization.

Selling Again
This makes zero sense for the Oilers. Skinner is on the cusp of being our first drafted and developed goalie in over a decade and is overall looking very promising, why would they trade him for Subban to have yet a 4th RHD that is a mess behind their own blue line?

The Bison King is not for sale. Also, neither Holl or Mrazek adequately address the Oilers needs. We already have a streaky injury prone goalie with another year on his contract and RD that don't defend well.

I get why they aren't, but I really wish NTCs were published from a fan perspective so I knew who was legitimately an option. As this downward spiral continues, I'd really want to know if Varlamov or Fleury are actually options or if the players have the option to block it.

Fleury doesn't get a first in this situation where Blackhawks retain nothing and the Oilers are retaining 50% on Koskinen, If the salary retainment is flipped where Fleury is $2.5-$3.5 retained and Koskinen is full value, then yes I'd agree on the first. The Turris dump is kinda pointless here. Just retain less on Koskinen if you're going to include Turris. And overall, the Turris dump is pretty inconsequential... 25% of a year of a $1.65mil cap hit.

If you're throwing a 1st and a high-end prospect you'll be getting a decent goalie with term. The Oilers bigger problem in acquiring a goalie upgrade is most of the veterans have NTCs (which Mrazek also has).
The Oilers wouldn't have much interest in Mrazek:
-Injury prone
-Had a falling out with Holland in Detroit
-Not a starter and his 2 years of term would be an issue next year when they would have Smith, Skinner, and Mrazek signed with nobody waiver exempt

Some people are saying Colorado will make a play for Fluery and edmonton will somehow end up with kuemper.</div></div>
I think part of it depends on when these lists were submitted. Offseason or pre-December, Edmonton being on these lists was 50/50. If they got to resubmit Jan 1 or didn't have to submit until recently, then there's a 99% chance Edmonton is on it. Kuemper has no trade protection so could see that working in a 3-way deal if Colorado decides they want to run with Fleury.

Who says no
With the Oilers in their current state, there is a zero percent chance that the 1st gets traded without protection. Currently, based on P% that pick would be around 13th. Trading a mid-first like that you better be getting players back that are part of a bigger picture. Won't be rentals like those guys.

Trading a couple 2nds for a goalie (or the trade proposed) who won't move the needle is a Chiarelli type move. Georgiev has back-up quality stats and no real reason to think he's going to look better in Edmonton. Would prefer Varlamov or Fleury to take a real swing at the problem.
