I don't know. Just thought the value from a hockey trade standpoint was fair. I'm sure the next GM will be able to navigate the cap. Off season has alot of moving parts.

This ACGM was a joke, but just because Holl is a “NHL” d man, doesn’t mean he’s a good one. Also acquiring a RFA is technically a controlled asset. Flip him for a 1st at the draft. It is possible to do that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dannibalcorpse</b></div><div>-I think Arizona would pass on this. Sandin/1st/2nd would be a good start, but if you're kicking both picks to 2024 I think the last piece needs to be a significant prospect - and Abruzzese just isn't there for me. He's already 23 and hasn't done a whole lot at the NHL level - the fact that the Leafs are calling up guys like Joey Anderson and Bobby McMann over him gives me a lot of pause about how his game will translate at the NHL level. There needs to be something significant added/swapped out for Abruzzese here.
-This probably gets Meier, but I'd argue it's a bad deal for Toronto. I think Meier is a guy who would be a straight rental for them, and giving up your best prospect and your '23 1st for a rental you're not going to have the space to sign, then adding additional assets on top of that, is just too much.</div></div>
I'm banking on this being very close to the value both teams get back for both players. Arizona is getting a younger version of Chykrun in Sandin along with a 1st and 2nd. Throw in a B prospect and It's in the ballpark if not dead on IMO. Sandin brings a similar skillset to what Chyk does (Good offensively, decent defensively, PP QB, high hockey IQ), but needs more reps in the top 4 to round out his game. Leafs can't afford him that, Arizona can. I'd wager he has the potential to be better than Chykrun in a couple of years.
Meier is for sure a rental, but with benefits, if you will. He would be a great grab for the top 6 this year and Dubas could flip him to replenish some lost draft capital at the draft.

You are right about Lilly being amazing though (If I were to overhype a defensemen, it would be Lilly). He 100% shouldn't be relied upon for top 4 minutes but isn't awful at it if injuries come. He is a puck moving RHD and should have value so I hope he returns for at least 1 more season.
I feel that the team needed him and he stepped up big time with all the injuries to the D core and I am trying to credit him with that</div></div>
100% agree with you on this. He was good when needed. But I do believe his deficiencies will outweigh his price tag come off-season.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>Who has been our best defensemen according to you? Why is it that every time he is on the ice, I notice him because he is/trying to make a good play? Everyone has brain farts in all zones because they are human. Who exactly do we get out of this deal that replaces Holl?</div></div>
In my mind, Lilly and Gio have been exceptional. I would also put Brodie and Sandin ahead of him this season. Sandin has been injured and has had his ups and downs same as Holl, but he is a much smarter player than Holl, makes better outlet passes and is younger with much more room to grow. I'm not saying Holl is useless, he just has some bad habits that I don't like. He makes poor decisions with the puck in the defensive and offensive zone regularly. At least once a game he makes soft clearing attempts resulting in give aways, pinches at the blue line to make a hit when he has no coverage behind him, gets lost in his d zone coverage leaving his man open. Again, he is a good bottom pairing option that can play up the lineup when needed, but shouldn't be relied upon for regular top 4 minutes, IMO. But you make it sound like he's been the pillar on defense all year. I disagree.
I think alot of the mistakes made by our defense in general are covered up by a strong defensive forward group, but that's another story. Bottom line, I doubt he is resigned this offseason and I for one am fine with it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>I get that you aren't a Leafs Fan so I'll explain why the Leafs laugh in the opposing trade partners face:
Trade 1: Holl has been one of our best defensemen at 2 mill per year and Niemela is our 3rd best prospect at RHD. So, remove those 2 and you've got a deal (maybe add a 3rd but same thing)
Trade 2: Minten is our second best prospect and Sandin is very very valuable (considering his cap hit and how young he is and him being a former 1rst and his play as of late) and then the 2 firsts. Try 1 first and 1 of Sandin or Minten and the Leafs accept</div></div>
Holl has been adequate at best. Has he had some good stretches? Sure. But he in no way, shape or form has he been our best defender. He is a replaceable, but serviceable bottom 6 d man. I would trade him in a heartbeat if we could get someone on the right side with better d zone presence and sandpaper. Holl is prone to way too many brain farts in all zones.

I would go as far as 24 1st + b level prospect like Steeves, if it was up to me. I love his game and think it would compliment JT and Nylander/Marner on the 2nd line really well. I think he's even more valuable at his 3M AAV for 3+ years still.

That Schenn deal nearly had me spit my coffee out. Thanks for the laugh.
Schenn may get a 2nd from a team like TO, but in no universe on our wide multiverse would or should Dubas trade a bluechip RHD prospect for a rental bottom pairing guy on the Leaf roster. Van would need to add Kuzy for this to make any sense. I doubt Canuck fans would agree with me, but that's the only way this trade makes sense to me.

Timmins is a better puck mover and offensively than Schenn, sure. But Schenn is much more physical, can log tough minutes, is stable in his own end and is playoff hardened. He brings something we lack on d.

Drop the Kessel signing and Clifford can GTFO. Promote some younger Marlies. Holmberg, McMann, Steeves, SDA (long shot). There are a lot of better options internally and at cheaper cap hits. Spend the savings on Kampf re-signing.
One thing I would love to see, assuming he has an outstanding camp, is Knies as the 2nd line C with JT on LW. JT can take faceoffs and fall back to LW while Knies gets accustomed to the NHL.

Moving on from Matthews
The Leafs would be a laughing stock if they traded Matthews. You either sign him long term to what he wants or push for as much playoff success in his contract year. He is our franchise player. He is a more complete C than last year and getting better defensively every game. Just throw him an 8yr 15M AAV contract. It's the best thing for the Leafs and AM34. I half expect that JT gives up the C to AM34 in the offseason, a la Patrick Marleau in SJ.
Also if he is going to walk, I am almost certain he would go to LA or Vegas (cap constraints be damned!).

No, I would value them equally. I don’t think the Leafs are in any position to give up a 23 1st in any deal for a rental. Either way, Van will get a better deal than Toronto can offer for Horvat.

It is if Muzz is too injured to return this year. May be an overpay, but it makes this team so much deeper than they are now. IMO this team is setup for a deep playoff run. Yes we lose a top prospect and a b level prospect, but we keep your first this year and all our top forward prospects. In all honesty, Neimela is 2 years away and they are pushing to win this year. Both Dubas and Keefe's jobs should be on the line this year. This is an all in move.
