Moving on from Matthews

Created by: HollywoodHudon
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 10, 2023
Published: Jan. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Giordano and Murray coming off the books after this 2023-24 season
Their combined $5,487,500 in cap hit gets allocated to:
Raises for Sandin and Liljegren of $1.6m - bumping them to 4 year $3m/season deals
Leaving $2,287,500 to sign a 3rd pairing LD to replace Giordano and get a backup G to Samsonov

In 2 years time when Tavares, Konecny, Marner, Boeser and Chychrun all need new deals:
Walk away from JT and allocate his now freed up $11m in cap space to:
Marner - will be 27 yrs old - 6 year $15m/season ($4.1m of JT's $11m)
Konecny - will be 27 yrs old - 6 year $10m/season ($4.5m of JT's $11m)
Boeser - will be 27 yrs old - 6 year $9m/season ($3.35m of JT's $11m (50k remaining))
Chychrun - will be 26 yrs old - 6 year $8m/season (hopefully the cap goes up enough ($3.4m) to accommodate this - if not - Jarnkrok may need to be moved out to make room for this)

Horvat and Schmaltz move up the C depth chart becoming #1 and #2 respectively.
Voit/Cooley/Knies line goes from 4th to 3rd on the depth chart while Jarnkrok and Holmberg drop to 4th line duties leaving just a 4th line LW/C spot to be filled on the cheap.

All of this is certainly do-able, it balances the lines and provides more depth scoring as well while bringing along young players with current and future all-star level talents in their prime.

Cooley looks to be ready for the NHL next year. Voit is leading the OHL in points and should be able to step into the NHL next year. Knies is also showing well, moving him to RW should not be a big deal. Easing this trio along with 4th line duties at first with the hopes and expectations that they will progress and improve to step into a scoring threat 3rd line role in year 2 or 3 of their NHL careers does not seem unrealistic at all. With the top 2 lines being full of "in their prime" all-star caliber players - there is no problem being patient with Voit/Cooley/Knies - and if they need time in the AHL first - no problem - 4th line can be filled with cheap veterans who know what their role will be.

Big pass from Arizona.

They'll sign him for free. No way they give that up for him. Crushes their entire rebuild.

Also, as fantastic as he is, Matthews isn't worth that, especially from a rebuilding team.

Third overall pick, two lottery picks, a young goal scoring center and a young elite defenceman for Matthews, a decent defenceman and an awful contract? Hell no

I’d imagine Arizona is patient enough to wait to sign Matthews instead of losing all their assets

imagine trading Matthews because you're worried about having to re-sign Boeser and konecny and a back up goalie?

Bo Horvat isn't signing that low ball offer, try more like 8 x $8,500,000 and i don't see him signing with Toronto.

The Arizona trade is even more laugh Neither Brodie or Muzzin waive for dumpster diving Arizona. And Arizona can just wait and sign Matthews in the summer of 2024 if he wants to go back home to Scottsdale.

Just might NEED to have Matthews in hand NOW in order to ENSURE Bedard goes to ARZ (assuming they win the lottery and draft him). The LAST thing ARZ needs is an Eric Lindros to the Nordiques situation. Having Matthews on the roster prior to the 2023 draft would all but ensure Bedard goes there if they draft him. That top line of Keller/Matthews/Bedard would be... well... WOW! Talk about turning a franchise around! And don't give me the "thats too much for them to give". They still have Ghost on the back end, Brodie as a stabilizing veteran presence on the back end for their young D like Moeser, Valimaki and Mayo, and they would still have Guenther and Crouse for 2nd line wing duties. ARZ would be more than fine.

BC going to a winner like TOR is a BAD place for Horvat to sign? And if it takes 8x$8.5... ok - there is the cap space to work that in and the Leafs would STILL be on the good side of the cap.

And Muzzin's NTC is up after this year and Brodie is limited to a 10 team list NTC come next year too. Sure ARZ might be on that list, but I am SURE going with Matthews and spending the last year of a $5m/season deal in a tax haven like ARZ instead of ONTARIO, could be a BIG TIME lure for Brodie to NOT have ARZ on his 10-team NTC list.

They can't even sell out the mullet arena when Matthews is in town. Arizona won't be a team for long. And Matthews is a lifelong leaf.

Matthews is going to resign this summer for 13.5 or a bit more. Nylander will resign as well and they'll have a really hard cap year in year 1 of those deals before seeing major savings on JT who'll resign for less than half to finish his career in TO. Marner will resign the summer after Matthews and Nylander.

The Leafs would be a laughing stock if they traded Matthews. You either sign him long term to what he wants or push for as much playoff success in his contract year. He is our franchise player. He is a more complete C than last year and getting better defensively every game. Just throw him an 8yr 15M AAV contract. It's the best thing for the Leafs and AM34. I half expect that JT gives up the C to AM34 in the offseason, a la Patrick Marleau in SJ.

Also if he is going to walk, I am almost certain he would go to LA or Vegas (cap constraints be damned!).

As long as Bettman is commish, Zona is a team. It sucks, but they're literally building a new rink. There's no hope of them moving.

And this team still doesn't get out of the first round of the playoffs because you did all this and didn't upgrade the goalies.

That is technically not true, they want to build an arena but does anyone really believe it's going to happen? The team has no money, they lost their last arena because they didn't pay their bills and now can't sell out a less than 5 thousand seat arena. The team is doomed.

I think Bettman will do everything he can, even bleed cash, to keep them there. Moving them out just proves that hockey doesn't work in the south. He's trying to grow the game. (with Atlanta also moving under his watch)

The other owners won't fork over money to make Arizona work, neither will the players association. So where does a franchise with no money come up with hundreds of millions to build an arena and sign Matthews? It's just not happening.

I think the point is that you don't trade for him without an extension so why trade all this for him? You either try to sign him as a ufa or you don't, but you don't trade for him

So this is going to be everyone's thing on here until he signs. Matthews is going to leave via FA so no one will trade anything for him. So a generational talent is up for trade and no one will want to spend anything because they will just sign him. This site is hilarious

Always nice coming back to ACGM every so often and immediately finding one which plays all the greatest hits.

-Leafs
-Very long description
-Bad trade using one or more of the big four forwards, somehow also undervaluing them
-Trading for the flavor of the month
-People who actually think Matthews is going to sign in Arizona
-First round joke
-JaredOfLondon

A team like arizona will not trade half their franchise for 1 year of matthews. Come on.

Toronto also likely would ride it out and not trade him, try to win a cup
