Not that I ever think they would trade Leon, but they would absolutely have to get a stud number 1 Dman back. otherwise it would be a huge failure. Think Cale Makar or Chabot or Heiskanen something like that.

Oilers Wishful Thinking 2021 2022
I think the Oilers could probably just add a FA winger for 3-4 M without having to give up Bear and a 2nd. I would dangle the 2021 1st (in a weaker draft) to try to get Seattle to bite on Neal. I also think they re-sign Koekkoek if they can get him back around 1-1.5 M, and they try to work in Samarukov next year on the LD. Russell won't see a lot of ice next year.
Also I don't believe both Barrie AND Larsson will be back. I'd lean more toward Larsson mainly because he will be cheaper than Barrie and he brings a different style than what Bear and Bouchard bring.

Oilers decline. They've traded a lot of picks already, the LD is already deep and Ennis and Jankowski are basically interchangeable.

Pastrnak and Marchand already play on a line together and Laine would literally just have to get open and he'd score 60 on Leon's line 😅

Before the draft??? Huh? Why would Columbus give up Jenner and a 1st for someone who they could have for free by just waiting a few days.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gmgb</b></div><div>Every indication from Poile so far seems to be they still see themselves in a competitive window. He talked earlier in the off-season about giving the prospects a chance, but later filled up the roster with a lot more UFA's than anyone following the team expected. There's a bit of a glut of forwards right now, and aside from the 4th line there isn't space to work any of the young guys into the lineup. Pretty much the same story on the back end. Realistically though, a rebuild/retool is inevitable. Aside from the fact that for whatever reason(s) this team has been underperforming for some time now, it's also one of the oldest squads in the league. So an injection of youth has to come sooner or later.
Josi has a NMC (the only one one the team, aside from Rinne), so he would be the least likely to be moved. Ellis isn't completely out of the question, in a rebuild scenario. NSH currently would need to protect four defensemen in the expansion draft. Ekholm seems the most likely to get traded, but Ellis could be moved in the right deal. Tolvanen wouldn't have a ton of value right now in a trade, but possibly could go for a similar prospect in a change of scenery type move, or as a secondary piece in a larger trade. Aside from Josi and Saros, I really don't think any of the roster players would be unavailable if they tear it down.
Some retention (maybe $1-1.5M) <em>could</em> be had on either of Duchene or Johansen, if the rest of the trade was advantageous enough to NSH. Even that might be pushing it though. I can't recall Poile retaining on a contract before. If he really wants to get either of those contracts off the books, letting the Kraken have one of them would probably be his best play.</div></div>
Okay thanks for the breakdown. What would a deal look like involving Ellis? He'd look great in Edmonton's Blueline 😁

Who would you protect for the expansion draft right now Answer for ur fav team
For Oilers:
McDavid
Draisaitl
RNH (assuming he signs an extension)
Yamamoto
Kahun
Puljujarvi
Benson/Archibald
Nurse
Bear
C. Jones
Koskinen
Klefbom could be deemed exempt due to a shoulder injury that they could argue is career threatening. No guarantee he plays next season.
I've posted about this before but if I am Holland I would offer a 1st + a prospect like Benson for Seattle to take the final 2 years of Neal's contract.

I really dont follow the Preds much, so I could be way off base here. But they seem like a team that is kind of in a state of flux right now. Is a rebuild/retool being considered? Any talk of moving out some vets and going a bit younger? Obviously Josi, Ellis, Tolvanen, shouldnt be moved, but what about guys like Forsberg, Arvidsson, Sissions, etc? How much would Nashville retain on Duchene or Johansen? Thanks!

What is the rule on Klefbom? Can you explain? Also I doubt they protect Lagesson. They are extremely deep at LD and are much better off keeping Kahun.

I think Yamamoto is a good player and is important to the Oilers future. I'm not sure where anyone said he's Nylander calibre though. If Yamamoto gets more than 4M it is very poor cap management. Kucherov got 4.7 M on a bridge. Vasilevsky 3.5. Theres no reason to pay him more than that. He has no leverage whatsoever.

They really aren't. Not sure what RNH has done to get 7+ M. Yamamoto is a standard bridge deal. You could argue 4 M maybe but unless they go long term he's not getting more than that. Especially when the cap isn't going to go up.</div></div>

No more buyouts. Its just dead cap.. you cant trade it or anything. It would be 1.9M on the books for 4 years. This years draft is weaker than usual. If it means you can sign a Top 6 winger for McDavid, then its worth giving up.

You can easily see he's the most talented offensively on the Oilers blueline. But the fact he isn't producing or creating a lot of chances means he is barely serviceable right now. Nurse has replaced him on the top PP. I think having a righty on there threw them off for a bit and Nurse gives them some familiarity as a left shot. But yea if Barrie isnt going offensively, he really doesnt provide anything of value. I expect that to change though, and Barrie will get another shot on the PP.

Not to mention it would just destroy the core of any team. It would be hard to build around him to compete by the time his contract is up.
Use Carolina for example, it would have to be something like Aho, Svechnikov, Pesce + Completely unrealistic haha

Are you serious? What exactly are the Oilers getting here? A 3C that didn't work here before, a fringe starter, a goofball in Deangelo, 2 guys who haven't proven anything in the NHL and picks? Not a chance.
Rangers don't have a number 1 D so there's no deal to be made.
