TOM WILSON

Created by: washcaps7019
Team: 2018-19 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 2, 2018
Published: Aug. 2, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A lot of people just don't understand how the NHL works do they? Let me say it loud and clear: WHEN YOU WIN A CUP YOU WILL BE OVERPAID!!!!!
Is Wilson being paid too much? - Yes

My personal opinion is that he is getting overpaid, I thought he'd make somewhere in the 4 mil. range, nevertheless he is signed.

You also have to consider cap space leaving after next season, does anyone actually believe that Connolly will be with the Caps in 2019-2020? Orpik will also be gone. Wether you like it or wilson plays a key role on this team both on his actual spot in the line up and on the PK. I'd rather have Tom Wilson killing penalties than Backstrom or Oshie.

TLDR: Wilson was going to be overpaid anyway, and there was no possible way he was going to make 2 mil. He does more for the team than you may realize.

sorry man but you can't justify that contract by saying $2.5m is coming off the books

When you win a Cup, STARS get overpaid. Not the Tom Wilsons of the world.

Edit: Look at next season. Unless the cap goes up, you have 11.8 million to sign 10 players. Burakovsky and Vrana will eat up at least half of that. They're screwed.

I'm not justifying it by saying 2.5 is coming off. I am saying cap space will become available. Also the cap keeps rising. I just don't think this contract is the end of the world for an important and good TOP 6 player.

top 6 is a stretch. he skated with ovi and backstrom and recorded 35 points i think it was.

I'm actually going to totally agree with this statement. When you win the cup, certain guys get overpaid. It always happens! Fernando Pisani anyone?

I really don’t see what this guy does other than throw the body, rough people up, and sit in the pk box. Yeah he’ll make an occasional nice play on offense, but it’s not hard to do playing with ovi. Good for Wilson for getting that contract, and I’m glad Washington screwed themselves with that

As usual, absolutely no one takes those points into context:
1) 32 of those 35 points were at 5v5, that ranks 96th among all forwards, ahead of guys like Derek Stepan, Ryan Johansen, James van Riemsdyk, Logan Couture, Tyler Johnson, and many more considered top six.
2) He didn't get into top 6 until 11/20/17, from that point through the playoffs he scored 17G and 27A in 82 games, that's 44 5v5 points, which is 27th among all forwards, better than players like Phil Kessel, Vladimir Tarasneko, Jonathan Huberdeau, Jakub Voracek, John Tavares, Matt Duchene, Jason Zucker, and so many more.
3) If Wilson gets top 6 time and PP time next season he'll hit 50 points. Going to be funny when it happens and everyone eats their words.

Tom Clarkson contract? Yeah he is overpaid sooo much it hurts. Teams that win SC should ask for help from outside the organization to stay on the ground with those deals..

why do you bother ...... its very rare that anyone outside Washington understands hi value. by making these post you just get a bunch of pens fans and other guys who think he played top 6 minutes all year commenting on number/stats

people will look at 78 games and 35 points say he sucks

but completely ignore

but ignore 15 point in 21 games in the nil playoffs were points are 2x harder to come by and he actually played top line minutes

so long story short ..... its nearly impossible to justify or crucify this deal till after this season bc know one understands how he will do in this top 6 role..... yeah he had 35 points 75% of the season he played with jay beagle 25% was with kuzy or backstrom at center.yeah he averaged .75 ppg in the sc playoffs....... was he a product of his role or a product of who he played with.......who knows well find out. right now he's overpaid by 1 million dollars Imo but people on this site think he's making 8 million/yr by the way they are talking haha its funny to me

You're not wrong. I think he's overpaid as a Caps fan. But his point totals are only a portion of the value he brings. He looked like he really belonged in the 1RW spot at the end of the season and in the playoffs with Kuznetsov and Ovechkin. His point totals are also without any PP time.

This contract is a huge bet on Wilson continuing to grow offensively. It could end up being a decent deal, or an awful one. Based on past production, it's awful right now. He's gotten better every season offensively. His ceiling is prime-Lucic offensive contribution. He'll last longer in the NHL as a power forward than Lucic IMO because he's faster.

Also, Bryan Bickell! Wilson is probably overpaid by a million or so, and will a ripple affect on the Caps’s cap...prolly should have put that in ALL CAPS...

This is a common misconception I'm seeing from a lot of people. He skated on the top line for about half the season. In the playoffs he skated on the top line every game and had 15 in 21 which spread over an 82 game season is roughly 58 points. Granted it's an extremely small sample size and we really don't know if he can be the productive over a full season, but he's certainly a top 6 forward. Was he overpaid? Absolutely. But this isn't going to end up being a back breaker for the Caps.
