Crazy how scary good this team is starting to look. I feel like it will be a dogfight between STL and COL for the 3rd spot in the central (WPG/NSH = 1st/2nd)

Thats why its probably a guaranteed that Barrie is moved for Top 6 Winger next offseason....especially when you add a Hughes or Kaapo Kakko with that Sens pick.

Watch out now

Usually when teams move a defenseman up to the wing it's not because they're good at offense, but because they're not reliable enough to take available minutes on defense. Of course, Brent Burns might start a trend, but counting on two rookies and one solid stay at home guy to be the whole rotation at right D might be rough. If I coached that team, Barrie stays on point, and each of the new guys auditions at wing in training camp, so that each can get enough NHL minutes to get their feet wet, in case the right trade becomes available soon.

I see your point they could probably rotate makar and barrie at rw if they needed too, maybe late in the game if they are up put barrie back on the blueline

Sorry man, someone needs to be the voice of reason/experience here. My assumption is that you are a huge fan who has never played the sport, or maybe you started playing as an adult, and that’s awesome if so. The problem is that a great puck moving defenseman does not make a great second-line RW. It doesn’t work like that. It would be nice if it did, as that would be much easier solution. I promise Joe Sakic (and every other GM) would figure out this solution for their team if it were realistic. Matt Nieto would be a better second-line winger than Barrie, and he barely makes the roster. Barrie will likely be the RD who will be moved for a true second-line winger at some point. He’s got enormous value to the team, as a trade chip or RD, but not a RW.

The better option is to to trade Barrie for a really good winger. However to the naysayers who say putting Barrie on the wing won't work. They already did in either his rookie year or the following one and he was pretty tasty which is why it often gets suggested. It's also not a bad move to have a guy who as a winger would have some defensive nous, if not enough that he works well as a D because he's far too aggressive offensively. In rotation with Makar & Timmins he could be interesting on the right. As a voice of reason who has played the game and switched up and down from wing to D and back it can be done with the right player. A lot is in the mindset. Some believe they can, some are destined to lose because they think they can't.

Interesting idea.

I would prefer trading Barrie for a winger, who can play a strong offensive and defensive game.

That being said, it will IMO depend on how the team will perform up until the trade deadline. If trading Barrie, they need a guy to fill out his spot one way or the other and the only one who can do it is probably Timmins.

And that finally depends on how his game is developed in the AHL.

So...

Interesting idea.
