The leafs will not make option 4 available. But if i was TOR id make a deadline that if he doesn't start negotiating on good faith when that deadline passes the deal is off the table and it now option 1 or 2.

The Leafs are at the point where every decision has at least 2 parts

It's sign Nylander for $7x6 AND trade ______, or don't extend __________ and lose Leo/JVR/Bozak/Gardiner for nothing

I won't be surprised if both sides wait out months, or if there is a deal announced tomorrow morning. Whatever happens, there will be another move as a consequence and I think it's that move that will be significant

We were happy to see those players walk.

The only 2 options I see is 2 yrs at 4m or 6 years at 6.5m. I think he has already been left with his options. He’s just playing a little game of who will miss the other more, which he is about to lose.

Or he goes to the KHL and still makes a ton of money. I mean really, He'd make 5-6 mil there easy. They have contracts there up to 8 million last I saw. They would pay for him.
They only have to outbid whatever low ball offer Toronto gives him on a 1 year deal.

The real world doesn't work so simply.

.....yet.

I think toronto has 28 days to sign him. After that it's trade me, or I'm going to the KHL. I see it happening. He's not taking 1 year for 4 million or whatever. He doesn't have too. Just 1 season in the KHL and he'll be traded by the time he gets back.

Heard Shanney talking got the impression they are trying to low ball the kid good luck he might just sit out the year or worse his agent gets involved and says we want to play we will take a 1 year contract for 3 mill and then let the arbitrator decide what we are worth. I think Shanney opened up a kettle with his comments that these kids agents are going to exploit

thats why I'm saying if they don't sign a deal in the next 28 days, he's gonna demand a trade. They will have a month to figure it out. I think when he demands a trade it's over. You don't go back from that.

Odds are 90% for a deal signed in October. Probably within 48 hours of Ritchie signing in ANA.

If Nylander goes to Europe and waits for a trade, that's bad. Still unlikely at this point.

The nightmare scenario is if a team, say NYI, offer sheets Nylander at 4x $6.08 => compensation of 1st + 3rd.
Leafs match it because 4 years of Nylander is worth more than that, but then trade Nylander for relationship reasons, thinking he's gone as a UFA in 4 years.
The worst part is the Leafs won't be in a position to punish the NYI with a revenge offer-sheet any time soon.

The Leafs are good enough to play without Nylander all year. Dubas is a young GM that wants to stand up for himself.
So no pressure, but make sure to trade or sign before an offer sheet.

what is a bigger nightmare is a team offer him a 6M-1 year deal that makes him a RFA with arb rights

From his draft year, Nylander is Benchmarking Draisaitl, who got $8.5m for 7 years based on 2 70 point seasons.
I don’t blame him. Why would he want to take less just because Leafs signed Tavares and still need to sign others? Nylander has 2 61 point seasons. He is definitely not benchmarking Virtanen, Bennett, Dal Colle, Reinhart, etc.
Leafs are benchmarking Ehlers, who got $6m x 7 for 64 & 60 point seasons. It looks like Nylander should get $6m based on this fact alone.

I don't know why toronto fans keep trying to compare other players salaries. It has little to do with it. It's like saying Crosby got 8.7 million a year, why should anyone really get more than that. Why should JT get more than that? It's not a relative argument.

It's about what you can get, not what others got. That's why JT gets 11 million and Crosby is at 8.7. Nylanders stats compared to Matthews and Marner aren't much different. All within like 10 points over 2 seasons. Are you really gonna claim that Matthews is worth probably 12 but Nylander is worth 6? What about Marner, Who people easily peg at 8+ but you won't cough up more than 6 for Willy. At least with Matthews the argument can be made he scores more goals, but you can't really say that about Marner. Who only had 1 season where he scored a whooping 8 more points. Yet when you look at it, he's probably going to get Dri money.

Nylanders not going to just hang around Toronto being treated like the 4th wheel picking up the left overs. They are going to have to either pay him or trade him. Whats not going to happen is he's not going to take 6 million while a guy who scored a whooping 8 more points probably walks out with 8 range

So he will sit out and force them to do something. I feel like he has a money in the family which affords him that option.
