Solid cheap backup goalie. I am actually surprised with that term though.

He has put up very bad numbers this year, but it's a very cheap longer term contract. It's not possible to make a bad signing when it's this cheap. Worse case scenario, he becomes a Career AHLer and his salary is buried in the minors.

It’s basically a risk-free deal and it shores up the net for the Wild with someone who has been a career back-up and filled that role for them reasonably effectively. In an era where backups routinely get 7 figures, this is a bargain. Even If his play falters and/or he falls back to 3rd string, he won’t cause anything vs the cap if sent down to the AHL. Would be curious to hear from anyone who thinks it’s a bad deal. A

His numbers are actually quite poor, especially considering the defense in front of him. I don't like this deal at all for MIN.

The term is so he could be exposed for the expansion draft. Before extending him, we didn't have goalie under contract beyond 2020-21. Dubnyk is a UFA in 2021 and Kahkonen is an RFA in 2020. This guarantees we have someone to meet the exposure requirement.

The term is very weird. But he can be buried in the minors without penalty and fulfills expansion quota. With that in mind, solid deal for our backup goalie.
