This would be scary. I’d be so mad if they jump to number 1 with where I think they’ll finish

It's a realistic thing, but I think Ottawa still matches that. They've talked about how they're building around Chabot and they've got nobody else to spend money on. They'll have $52M open up next year with a bunch of their injured reserve contracts disappearing and will have tons of money. Between White's contract from this year (maybe $4-5), and the only important guys being Tierney ($4-5), Jaros ($2-3), C. Brown ($3), DeMelo ($2-3), Duclair ($2-3), Balcers ($1-2) and Chabot needing to be signed, it's easy. Maybe includes Pageau, and a bunch of young guys. Assuming the other guys come in at the higher end, it's like $23M - $26M before dealing with Chabot, leaving $26M that needs to be spent somewhere.

Honestly I don't see the point of doing it. I sure would like to have Chabot, but we would put ourselves in a difficult position doing so. I will never say it enough, we habs are two-three years away from cap hell. We have a lot of good young players who will need to be paid sooner or later. Think about Domi, Gally, Danault Petry, KK, Poehling, Suzuki, Caufield contracts.... Yes we have a nice young core but if we want to keep this core, we need to be extremely careful with our cap management and we need to sign those guys as soon as possible. Adding Chabot in this would probably result in the loss of some of the guys named above.

Also Chabot is probs worth 10 mil lol so why not go up to the next OS level.
Its also not hard to believe that there will be some sort of bidding war for Chabot's services. Any team should be willing to give 2 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd for him

None of them will be asking for that much and chabot is better than every player. It’d be worth signing him and trading away one of your second or 3rd line players

Petry is as good as gone at TDL or next summer. Brook and Fleury coming and Weber isn't moving

just like carolina wouldn't give aho all those bonuses. It took them two minutes to decide to match. This might take less time. This is montreal doing Ottawa a favor. Teams have to spend money, and Chabot is going to cost money. No matter how cheap the owner is, they're not giving him up for that crap.

Agreed. Also, if Caufield and Suzuki really pan out like they're supposed to, Gally becomes 3rd RW, we won't keep him at 5-6M on the 3rd line. Same goes for Danault with KK-Poehling-Ikonen if he asks for more than 4M IMO

I think you are underestimating the cheapness of Melnyk. With all that has happened in the last year, you shouldn't be surprised if they decided not to match.

He’s their most marketable player. He’s the guy selling jerseys. No. They laugh and match

Ottawa letting a marketable player go? Never thought I'd see the day

smartest thing they could have done was ditching Karlsson. he signed a nightmare of a contract, and they offered him 80 million. Karlsson really has nothing to do with this conversation. Would you rather 22 year old Chabot for 5 years at 8 and change or Karlsson at 11.5 until he's 70.
