Laine Shipped off to the Habs

Description
Laine and the Habs have reportedly been linked. I think a fair and realistic trade could be the one I’m proposing. I think Laine commanding a top 6 roster player, a top 4 d man and good NHL level prospect and a high end pick is the demand.

Jets are in a win now mode with a closing window. Adding Tatar and Petry now is super beneficial for the Jets as Petry is a darling in the advanced analytics community and can play anywhere in your top 4. Tatar is a perennial 20+ goal scorer who can offset some of the loss of Laine at a fraction of the cost. I believe his cap hit would actually only be 4.8 million (don’t quote me on that) as Vegas is retaining part of his contract currently. Both these guys are likely to test UFA markets in 2 years as it’ll be their last chance to get big money with some term, making it worthwhile for Montreal to move on from them early to capitalize on their value. Montreal has arguably the best youth core in hockey right now and will easily be able to replace these guys with the likes of Brook, Romanov, Juulsen coming up on defence and Caufield, Suzuki, Poehling and other coming up to take Tatar’s spot. Laine, KK, Caufield in 2 years time with Suzuki/Drouin Domi Gallagher might be as scary of a top 6 as any. Danualt byron lehkonen/Byron as third is also no laughing matter. So basically the thought process is long term out look for Montreal, with short term for the Jets.

Important to note while I did retain 50% of Petry’s deal I see the Habs realistically only taking in 1/3 of his contract. The deal plus signing would make the Habs a cap tight team but they can burry guys like alzner and Weise. Admittedly Montreal’s defence takes a hit this year most likely but as a team that’s only getting better with time and a fringe playoff outlook this season, I think you can afford it for a franchise guy like Laine, who gets a bad rep but the goal scoring is simply undeniably elite. I fully anticipate him to bounce back regardless if it’s with the Jets or another team. I really do think this is a win-win and makes the Jets better now and the Habs better in the long run. I’d love to hear people’s thoughts.

Fleury interchangeable with any “B” ranked prospect the Habs have right now with their deep pool. Think guys like Evans, Ikonen, McNiven, Teasdale, Mcshane, Hillis etc all being readily available. I just think a young potentially NHL ready d man is just the most tempting for the Jets at the moment.

Even if the jets are in win now they would want younger player in return. Switch tatar by drouin, and the prospect they would look for would be a forward. Ylonen have good offensive upside. You won’t land laine with a 30 years old defenseman and a 28 year old
Forward.
Maybe petry could interest winnipeg for sure but not both.

Chevy instantly looking for work, trade will probably look closer to Kane to Buffalo trade than the one you proposed. Suzuki, or brook and picks as the prospect wpg actually has a chance of winning trade

If the Jets trade Laine they should go for futures, Petry and Tatar are of no value to them as much as I like those players, this win now idea is nonsense, they're a young team who's best years are a couple seasons away.
Blake Wheeler should be on the trade block if Laine is traded, they'll never win with him or his albatross contract.

I disagree with my colleagues above. IMO this is fine deal for the Jets. Tatar and Petry (he agreed to a M NTC trade) would help Jets immediately, and the Jets are in a win mode now. Two good NHLers filling a position of need while just giving up one. There two salaries are less than Laine's, which help the Jets cap problems Plus the Jets get two futures. All that for five years of Laine.
To me, it's Montreal that might be overpaying for Laine...not only in the trade but with 9.75m going for one player Laine, plus the Petry retention.

But overall, it might be what both teams are looking a for. Good post by Habslogiq24.

I think this is a reasonable trade for Laine. I do agree with @Sebybbq however though, they would be looking for a younger forward with term, that means Drouin.

The issue I have with this deal is that when weber was out of the lineup petry was the only consistent reliable dman against top lines i think as nice as this would be for the canadiens wing future it would hurt them in the now on defence. Besides that factor pretty solid deal all around.

Hey everyone thanks for the feedback. I honestly don't mind either Drouin or Tatar going, the reason I suggested Tatar over Drouin was because Tatar is a much more reliable goal scorer than drouin and if you want to hit the reset button a bit after 2 years of going for it, you have the cap space to do it. Definitely see the counter argument for Drouin being highly valid. Win now is a stupid ideology but one most top end teams buy into, especially when they feel they are going backwards like the Jets. Prospects honestly are pretty interchangeable from a Montreal perspective. Lastly, one of things I didn't really go into depth with was the Dollar figure on the Laine contract. I just kind of picked a random number that seemed towards the high end haha! Both that figure, and the amount of retention on a potential Petry deal is very flexible depending on negations if they were to transpire. I do however think adding Petry into the top 4 makes the Jets top 4 outstanding (I'm also a big Pionk fan). I'm sure the habs would prefer to retain Drouin but if push came to shove... I'd do it. I really see Laine as one of the best 5 goal scorers in the league who just had a tough season. He's still super young and hope he'd thrive kind of like Domi did in the Montreal market!
