Gotta think the number will be higher...even at7m Tampa has room. It's next year with all those RFA signings and Vasilesky already has 6m raise, that is the challenge. And no all those M NTCs, NMCs can't be wished away.

But in other hand how can point earns more than kucherov and stamkos! I mean if the leafs and buffalo was so stupid and offer gigantic contract to players like eichel and
Matthews, marner that there’s problem. Tampa bay can start the year without point. They have enough depth. Tampa ad a history of signing players to bridge deal.

Because the cap is higher now than it was when Stamkos signed, not to mention he probably genuinely loves Tampa enough to have taken that discount. When looking for comparables, players don't look at pure money unless the deal was signed in the last year or two (Stamkos was 3 offseasons ago). Point is going to earn more than Kucherov and Stamkos because the cap is higher for him, plus he has newfound comparables (Matthews and Marner) to help drive his price up.

This fake news .. Aho is floor and Point above Aho ... now they could do a 6M 7M 8M 3 year contract and Point gets 9M plus in year 4 but would then go North of 12M LT thereafter .. Tampa should be like Flyers and Jets in their signings yesterday .. 8 by 10M

They can play Johnson at 1C and get him another 70 point year. I'm not even sure they'll notice if Point is missing.

They should trade him for picks.

Marner 8 years at 10.8 AAV ... jeesh .. nice player but a one dimensional forward

And for the moron who keeps comparing to Point to old contracts from Kuch and Stamkos .. wake up that is irrelevant to market price TODAY .. ps plus who do you think set up and assisted Kuch and Stamkis (PP) on all those goals?

It’s a bridge, and while it’s definitely a crazy underpayment, LeBrun knows what he’s talking about and I don’t think it’s impossible for BriseBois to be underestimating Point; he’s not leaving much room there....

We have more than $6m, sure, but I’m not seeing where $10m comes from. With bonuses, we have something in the area of $7.5m to sign Point. That already assumes Domingue is in the minors, so moving him only saves $75k, which is really not significant at all. Moving Condon and Rutta would save cap, but I don’t think anyone will take Condon without a major incentive. Moving Condon + Rutta saves us just under $2m assuming we call up another player to replace Rutta so that we have a full roster. So if we pay a ransom in a trade, we could get $9.5m at the absolute most, and it makes a lot of sense for BriseBois to push hard to keep it under $7.5m.

Compared to a lot of reporters, I don’t think LeBrun is particularly prone to fake news.

In fact he talks with BriseBois himself, probably regularly in person and/or on phone, i have just read an article on athletic... and they talked with each other in june for example... safe to say you can trust him... nod

Percentage of cap is the only way to compare contracts from different years. Stamkos outperformed both Mathews and Marner on their ELC's and his 2nd contract was 11.7% of the cap, Mathews 14.3%, Marner 13.4%. I don't blame Dubas for the Marner contract because he'd already set the bar on his own team; he had no choice and will continue to pay the price going forward. It was the Mathews contract that was unadulterated stupidity.

Regardless, the fact is these Toronto contracts are not like-kind comparables for Point. If you were usning them as comps in an appraisel for example, you would discount them significantly (taxes, team, market, life style, weather, cost of living, etc) to arrive at a value for Point's contract. Also, Point is likely only going to be given a 3yr bridge option, which is very different from a contract that includes any UFA years. At least it was before dumb f$ck Dubas got a GM job in the NHL.
