Isis Brad Marchand the best player in the league

Created by: Bcarlo25
Team: 2019-20 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 28, 2019
Published: Nov. 28, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This will ruffle some feathers. I’m not really venturing an opinion either way, but let’s run down some numbers, under the context that he is elite defensively.
Per 60 minute stats:
Goals: 2nd (behind pastrnak)
Even strength goals: 1st
Assists: 2nd, just behind Draisaitl.
EV assists: 4th, behind barkov, Malkin, rantanen.
Points: first. By a lot.
EV points: First. By a full point per 60. Marchand is at 4.975, second is Draisaitl at 3.95. That’s insane.

Again, all this in the context that he’s elite defensively, getting tough match ups every night, playing penalty kill etc.

It’s not ridiculous. It’s a legitimate question. If you have to win one hockey game tomorrow, is he the first guy picked? Probably not, but maybe.

So prove it. Thats all they are asking. If you think he sucks defensively, back it up

All you need to do is watch him play. Stevie Wonder can see it. But if you see what you want to see as opposed to reality....??‍♂️

If he truly is bad defensively, you would have zero problem proving it other than saying "watch him play".

Then why have his defensive zone starts gone down each year if Cassidy trusts him more?

C’mon. I am not denigrating Pasta as a player or the value he brings to the team. I doubt i’d be willing to trade him for anyone.

But to even intimate that he is ok defensively is sticking your head in the sand delusional.

well i would say hes better than ok. Ya i wouldnt have him killing penalties but hes not a liability out there either

All I took from your title is that Brad Marchand is in ISIS

Haha, I was going to say that Marchand is probably closer to being an ISIS member than he is to being the best player in the NHL.

Could very well be. Does not make him the best PLAYER in the league. Makes him maybe the best goal scorer.

Seeing is believing. There is no better proof or evidence.

It’s like religious people trying to prove to me God exists. You can say whatever you want, i am not basing it off your belief, i need actual physical proof.

The physical proof is there to see. If you choose not to. So be it. Nothing i can say will change your mind.

So name a forward on the team who is worse defensively. There are a couple of candidates.

Change my mind? lmao I never even said he was good or bad. All I said was back up what you say with some facts, which you once again fail to do

How do you prove a negative? You can’t.

What stats do you need to show defensive acumen from a player? Are there any that are truly reliable? And do they show that better than any visual? Stats can be misleading. They eye test is not.

So name them. I said there are a couple of candidates. I did not say they were worse. It would be open for debate. The rest of the team would be ridiculous to even try to make that debate.

Lol, hardly. Leading goal scorer. Sure.

His defense is atrocious.

He's actually pretty good defensively for a winger. Also really physical. I think he is better than Marner.

Though he's not a likeable player, I think Brad Marchand is a really big star in this league. His skillset is unbelievable! Easily the best player this season. However, the best of his generation overall, that's a tricky question. Is he better than Patrick Kane in his prime? Is he better than Evgeni Malkin?

No? Kind of telling that I asked you to name one on the team and you couldn’t don’t you think?

A couple I could see and it would come down to personal preference.

BTW. Worst in the league is Laine. And Pasta is way better than him.

Easily top 5 winger.

Top 5 overall is debatable but as you already have I think you could make argument. Aside from his skill, the total value he brings to the team is huge. It's why almost everyone outside of Boston hates him.

I think the argument against him of "well he plays with other good players on a good team" is garbage. It obviously helps, but its a weak excuse. We've seen plenty of times where seemingly good players can't cut it on a top line because they simply aren't good enough. Just throwing that out there.

My vote is McDavid and here is why. Crosby & Marchand (outstanding players) have quality line mates on elite teams. The only reason McDavid isn’t thought of as the best is he has been playing for a poor hockey club. Each year his offensive numbers have improved. There will be a time he will dominate the league offensively. Win the Art Ross by 20+ points.

There will be people reading this and saying winning the scoring championship doesn’t make you the best. I have no doubt, McDavid will be a champion. To win the cup, defense is king.

I argue when you think of Gretzky, you are not thinking of a centre who was superior playing a 200 foot game. But his line-mate, Jari Kurri was the defensive side of a line that dominated the league in the 1980’s.

To reach that level of greatness, to be thought of as the best in your sport, then I think the common dominator is when a player can elevate their level of play, it becomes infectious, and it elevates the entire play of the team.

Marchand is an elite talent and his contract is an absolute steal for the Bruins but best in the league? No chance

McDavid makes Edmonton relevant. No disrespect to any other player mentioned above but if you can only pick 1 player to win you a game you pick the one who's been doing every game since his first. Draisatl helps certainly but Leon needs McDavid more than the other way around.

If you wanted to debate best performance per $ of cap (no ELCs included cause otherwise it's easily Makar) then you'd have Marchand on the podium. In my mind it's Mackinnon, Marchand, Pasta in that order.

if we’re talking about visually watching games as a reliable source then i wouldnt say pasta is just OK at defense. he can definitely hold his own in the defensive zone. he has good sticks (something that cassidy praises him for) and has high hockey iq. If i had to describe his defensive play i would say its right where it should be for the type of player he is. Someone who can put up goals and not be a liability in his own zone.

In terms of players worst defensively than him its pretty hard to say bc everyone on the team is pre good. If i had to say the players who have been bad at defending as of late, i would say mcavoy, kampfer, stud looked bad but it was his first game so i’ll forgive him, bjork has his moments, and krug.

I said forwards. There are 14 primary forwards when healthy.

Bergy, Marchy, Pasta, Debrusk, Krejci, Ritchie, Heinen, Coyle, Kuhlman, Nordstrom, Kuraly, Wagner, Lindholm, Backes

Who is the worst defensively amongst them?
