Habs agressive stunners Price to COL cap space for Barzal

Created by: nilees24
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 14, 2020
Published: May 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For the Habs to improve on offense & defense they'll have to give up their crown jewel in net. And yes, for the Habs to resign pillar players long-term (Gallagher, Danualt, Petry), their only option is departing with Price's 10.5 million cap space. Sakic is in need of a goaltender with a high pedigree, Price would waive his no-trade clause for a Cup contender in the Western conference. MTL can ride Francouz and Crawford as BRIDGE goaltenders until Primeau is ready to go for the 2022/23 season. Give them both 40 games each and find out which one is good to go for a playoff run.

Projected cap space - (81.5 mill salary cap spikes to 84.5 mill for 2021/22)

Word out of Montreal is Ilya Kovalchuk is a lock to return (likely 3 mil/yr deal with performance bonuses). Feeling is Tatar & Weal are not affordable to re-sign for 2021/22 season (unless Drouin is traded in 2021-22). All other UFA's/RFA's at start of 2021/22 (Gallagher, Danault, Petry, Armia, Lehkonen, Poehling, etc.) can be resigned at fair market value (total cap hit for top 23 players just under $84 mill for 2021/22 season).

2021/22 Contract Offers (UFA's/RFA's):
Gallagher 6 yr / 43.5 mill (7.25 mill/yr.)
Danualt 6 yr / 36 mill (6 mill/yr.)
Petry 4 yr / 22 mill (5.5 mill/yr.)
Armia 4 yr / 16 mill (4 mill/yr.)
Lehkonen 3 yr / 9 mill (3 mill/yr.)
Poehling 2 yr / 1.7 mill (850k/yr.)
Caufield 3 yr / 2.775 mill (925k/yr entry-level deal.)

If players and GMs think hes the best, does that make him the best? His highest trade value is this offseason.

He has no trade value

Lol ya neither of those will happen.

I predict Price will have a Rinne or Lundqvist like career. Play into his mid 30s, be decent, but elite behind a youthful up and coming Habs team. Even with a flat cap the Habs are in good shape with him, couple years from now when the cap finally rises again they will still be good with him.

His reputation holds value in a trade, at this moment, you're opinion wont change that.

His cap hit won't hurt the Habs as long as the cap rises by 2022. Pretty simple to see.

MB has demonstrated a willingness to trade talented players without remorse (Subban). Itchy trade finger. Price would be easy for him to move if it fixed his offense/defense and improve cap space for years to come. I remind you that Carey Price is their greatest trade chip

This is completely divorced from reality

I made a couple points. Which one is part of the divorce?

When it comes to own team player evaluations, Habs fans often are divorced from reality- more so than all the other fanbases.

You would never get the value that Habs fans would want. He hold value but it would never be enough to forgive the fan base. There is a wide gap between his actual value, and what Habs fans would accept

Sakic wouldn't trade girard for price straight up with retention. Goalies have crappy trade value to begin with, let alone goalies with the worst contract in nhl history

COL has too much cap space. Can't understand Sakic's willingness to request some cap retention for acquiring the best in the world. Francouz is worthless if Price is on the roster. Deal makes sense.

The Habs haven't been very good in front of him. Majority in the NHL believe he is the best right now.

41% isn't a majority and it was before this year before he put up a pedestrian .909 GAA and it's a subjective vote

May I offer a different idea that everyone seems to be glossing over?

Ask yourself this:
Is there not a GM in the NHL that would trade for Price right now?

We all know what WE'D do. I think the more important question is would NHL GM's not do it? Not necessarily this trade above but trading for Price in a deal that actually involves value going back?

I know for a fact that the old boys club is still very much relevant in today's NHL. I think with a little retention and a more modest return, Price can absolutely be traded. Right now.

Who cares what we'd do.....nothing we say or do makes a difference in the NHL. Real GM's however......well, I definitely wouldn't be betting any money on things I know they won't do. NHL GM's do the darn-dest things sometime.

I genuinely believe not a single GM would give up assets for him with that contract

Oh I disagree. You are looking at it at face value. In any trade of this magnitude, other cap would be going the other way. Offsetting the impact.

Players, Coaches, GM's still love this guy. He's a consummate professional that is highly respected among his peers. In the NHL, that is enough.

Not to mention a role model, a marketing asset and at the end of the day still a decent goalie. Its only the contract that us fans look at but there are a lot of other factors GM's look at.

This COL trade makes the Avs a cup contender for the next 3 years. Gives the HABS two goalies to bridge for Primeau's arrival in 2022/23.

COL is a Cup contender WITHOUT Price. Top 4 right now in GA, GF, Wins and win%. They are one of the youngest teams in the league, have one of the best prospect pools in the league and have cap space to work with for the next 4 years before the MacKinnon extension happens.
They don’t need Price and more importantly don’t want that contract.

Being highly respected doesnt mean a team is gonna pay 10.5M per season for an average-to-below-average performance. Especially now when there are so many goalies available via trade (Murray, Georgiev/Lundqvist) and free agency (Lehner, Crawford, Greiss, Holtby, Khudobin, Markstrom, Talbot, etc). Being highly respected means they may offer him a front office or scouting job when he retires, not that they are going to put up with poor play.

If that much cap is going back to MTL to offset it then its a cap dump both ways (similar to Lucic/Neal). I wouldnt call that 'giving up assets' though.

COL has tons of cap space and could entertain the full value of Price's contract. Sakic wouldn't shy away. Maybe change the 1st rd to a 3rd rounder I suppose.

30+ yr old goalie on a $10.5M contract for the next 6 yrs would be cap suicide for team that has at a minimum 3 huge extensions in the next 4 years. Colorado would literally not send a single piece you had in the trade straight up for him, that’s how toxic that contract would be to the Avs.
