Kyle Dubas needs to be fired

Created by: Saskleaf
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 27, 2020
Published: May 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dubas has made stupid move after stupid move. Overpaying the big 4, Trading Kadri, Giving up a first for nothing (except cap space), and of course, refusing to get a good right handed defence man. So many times he has proved he should be replaced. What everyones thoughts on this? Also, just remembered. Willy should have been gone the moment they signed JT.

Do research kid, go read his comments.

He recently said he will take less on his next deal because he wants to win but I'll believe when I see it. It'll be like JT taking less to go to TO. Still is going to get a massive deal.

That's great, you'd be surprised how many people don't care what you think.

Who should I believe, MacKinnon himself or a guy with the username PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Kyle Dubas:

1. Traded for Ceci to save Toronto from Zaitsev's crippling 6-year contract (that Lamoriello signed)
2. Traded a 1st to save Toronto from Marleau's crippling $6,250,000 contract (that Lamoriello signed)
3. Traded for our best defensive d-man (Jake Muzzin) and re-signed him to a good contract.
4. Traded for a goalie (Campbell) that had just signed a (far) below market value extension.
5. Signed Kapanen, Johnsson and Kerfoot to multi-year extensions at below market-value.
6. Signed Jason Spezza to a league minimum contract.
7. Acquired John Tavares without giving up any assets.
8. Acquired Ilya Mikheyev without giving up any assets.
9. Acquired Miko Lehtonen without giving up any assets.
10. Drafted Rasmus Sandin 29th overall.
11. Drafted Nick Robertson 53rd overall.

And sure ... Dubas definitely overpaid Matthews + Marner by a total of about $2,000,000 ... but you know what?

Mikheyev's value vs cost made up for that entire $2,000,000 this season (all by itself).
And his extension should be reasonable, so he'll probably continue that (all by himself).
I could also mention that Nylander looks primed to out-perform his contract.
I could also mention that Kapanen looks primed to out-perform his contract.
I could also mention that Sandin and Robertson will be steals on their ELC's.

But you're right ... he should have just traded Matthews + Marner because they had good agents ... right?

every point is correct and should be equally factored in when discussing dubas' track record so far, as well as adding clifford in that campbell deal to get that grit and a guy who couldnt be happier to be in toronto or stand up for his teammates. i will argue that kapanen, johnsson, and kerfoot are about average to slightly above average market value, with kapanen probably on the best deal due to upside.

That's false. Not everybody needs or wants the biggest contract. It's greed and ego and doesn't belong in hockey.

Guess malkin will never win anything. Took higher percentage of cap then anyone on Leafs.

Dig up some quotes from when he signed for $6.3, I highly doubt he was talking about discounts then. As was said he was coming of seasons worse then Nylander, Ehlers, Pastanak, etc. He got market rate at the time (or above), now he's outplaying his contract. That fairly simple to see for most people.

I don't think he should be fired but I think he needs to reassess the way he built the team. Its a good idea in theory to have an all skill team but you still need to be a tough team to play against and if the Leafs aren't scoring they aren't winning and in the playoffs you need to be a team that wears other teams down. Not saying they have to be the Bruins but they have to have role players who win puck battles and throw hits and the only guys like that on the team IMO are Muzzin, Hyman, Clifford, and occasionally Kapanen everyone else is all offense. The fact they're trying to extend Clifford of all people proves my point

People yell at him but honestly he really tried to make the team better

1. Kadri had to go. He got himself suspended twice and cost the leafs against boston. If it wasnt colorado it was calgary
2. When he waived Mchileny he was betting sparks could be the future starter but sadly it failed. Its okay cause we got campbell now
3. He got rid of that horrible zaitsev contract for 1 year of ceci which despite the fact he drives fans insane is okay
4. Sure he overpaid some players but those players could grow into their contracts and be bargins in a few years
5. In general most of his bad trades were him fixing Lous messes

Overall he is a fine GM and will only continue to grow and improve. Lets see what he does as he now understands the blue line needs help.

At the time I thought the Kadri trade was a steal for the Leafs considering Kerfoot had identical stats to Kadri and was younger plus them getting Barrie on retained salary. Like I said Babcock should've been fired before the season started but I doubt that was his call

I have a feeling kerfoot will bounce back. Adjusting to 2 new coaches and moving from wing to center then back no wonder his production faltered. But I believe he will get back to 40 points next season. As for barrie babcock is the major factor in his low production and thanks to keefe his reputation was salvaged. But the ironic thing was someone posted something funny where barrie actually should have had. Could u picture if keefe was coach from day 1 leafs may have never had to worry about losing the 3rd or even the 2nd spot as they would have been way ahead of florida.

From what I have seen barrie should have had 9 goals and 34 assists (43 points) but Hyman stole 2 and Tavares as well as tip ins are a ****. Still though he is probs gone. But at least he left with some goals

The big 4 are paid fairly, and are not at all a problem. They are all elite and make the team better. The defence isn't terrible, the system under Babs was terrible, under Keefe they dealt with massive injury problems and were learning a new system but the team showed a lot of progress towards the shutdown. Most don't see it because they just don't understand hockey but defending wasn't the problem under Keefe, it was almost completely turnovers that were the cause of all the problems. They were cutting those down before the shut down. Blaming Dubas for giving up a 1st rounder for nothing (apart from cap space) is for lack of a better phrase, ****ing stupid. Who signed Marleau to that contract? Who cares about Kadri, he hurt the Leafs more than he helped us. Two years in a row, he could have been a difference maker and instead was sitting while the team lost a series they could have won. Would they have won if he was playing? Maybe, but we never knew because he was an idiot.

Point to a trade that Dubas didn't win? Apart from trading Marleau which was never going to be a good move but it sure beat trading Nylander when his value was low.

Anyone who thinks Dubas should be fired is either a troll who just hates the Leafs or is an old school cement head that thinks you need a bunch of hard hitting meat heads from the clutch and grab era to win. The Leafs are 4 seasons removed from finishing last and are the 4th or 5th youngest team in the league. They are still learning. Have patience and don't listen to the idiots on here going off about stuff that isn't real.

Well played sir

How did signing JT rush the rebuild? They had made the playoffs in each of the 2 years before they got him. They weren't rebuilding anymore, they were working their way up to contention.

He has had the job for 2 years, which is never enough to judge a GM's record unless he really screws up hard (like Fenton in Minnesota). And, he was left in a tough spot (having to sign young stars who didn't like the coach they were playing for) and had some deadweight contracts (Marleau, Martin and Zaitsev) that Lou left him with.

Since then, he's signed JT, built a great top-9 forward core, and he has proven himself to be an excellent drafter (Sandin, Robertson, Abruzesse) and talent evaluator (he signed this year's OHL dman of the year after Arizona didn't offer him a contract). The Nylander contract has turned out just fine and his depth signings have been great (Spezza, Ennis come to mind). They have Liljegren and Sandin coming up which should hopefully stabilize the defense. His other trades (aside from Kadri) have been good, Muzzin was a good add and getting out of Zaitsev's contract is a win.

Trading Kadri was a good idea since 4.5 million for a 3C playing 13-14 mins a night wasn't going to work. Barrie wasn't the right guy. Someone more defensively responsible would have been nice. Matthews and Marner were overpaid (Matthews got too much money relative to the term and Marner was overpaid period) but I'd much rather overpay a star by 2 million than a depth guy.

No GM has a perfect record. But the Leafs have to play to their strengths, which is that they have great skill and are built to move the puck and score. If a new GM comes in, implements a philosophy of playing "tough" and "gritty", then it's automatically lowering the ceiling of the team by making the stars do things they can't do. For this team, Dubas is the right guy because his vision for hockey lines up with the team he has on the ice. He shouldn't be fired.

Have we all forgotten Kadri had a M-NTC to deal with, I highly doubt Barrie was top of the list, Kadri had no desire to leave TO his childish antics that caused him to be suspended in back to back seasons at their most critical points sealed his fate, I'm also going to assume Kadri and his agent are on the smarter side of things and handed in a no trade list of Minnesota (Dumba) Chicago (Murphy) Columbus (Savard) Anaheim (Manson) Calgary (Brodie) that's 5 right there.....and I'm struggling to name another 5 RHD I'd take over Barrie that fit the cap allowance while also aquiring his replacement

I love how you guys keep sugarcoating Dubas signing 3 guys for pretty much 11M each. Its bad management, but I'm not the one that has to live with it. Enjoy another decade without a cup. Hey, at least you guys got good regular season entertainment with that sick mitch marner and that sick auston matthews!!!

I hate to break it to you ... but Tampa GM's did exactly what you're calling out Dubas for ... they just spent $2,800,000 more.

Both teams will have to build their roster around their 10 largest multi-year contracts ... Tampa just has a bit less money to work with and a far older core.

Tampa Bay (Top 10 Cap-Hits)

$9,500,000 = Vasilevskiy
$9,500,000 = Kucherov
$8,500,000 = Stamkos
$7,900,000 = Hedman
$6,750,000 = McDonagh
$6,750,000 = Point
$5,300,000 = Palat
$5,200,000 = Gourde
$5,000,000 = Johnson
$4,500,000 = Killorn
---------------------
$68,900,000 = TOTAL

Toronto (Top 10 Cap-Hits)

$11,600,000 = Matthews
$11,000,000 = Tavares
$10,900,000 = Marner
$6,900,000 = Nylander
$5,600,000 = Muzzin
$5,000,000 = Andersen
$5,000,000 = Rielly
$3,500,000 = Kerfoot
$3,400,000 = Johnsson
$3,200,000 = Kapanen
--------------------------
$66,100,000 = TOTAL

Three guys making XXXX dollars becomes 100% irrelevant when you break down the real cap-situation.

Sorry bro.

Kadri rejected a Calgary trade that included Hamonic ... it was reported by TSN.

My dude ... my dude:

MacKinnon was coming off 38 + 52 point seasons (0.66 points per game) when he extended for 8.63% of the cap.
Nylander was coming off 61 + 61 point seasons (0.75 points per game) when he extended for 8.76% of the cap.

MacKinnon did not take a discount ... he just improved after signing (bless his heart).
Or maybe he took a slight discount ... which means Nylander took a massive discount.

Just facts though.

This, I'd even be willing to argue that the Matthews contract isn't really an overpay

Could be done ... but I was still pissed when I saw it lol.

I thought he would show some respect for Tavares and take a matching deal or slightly less.

Kapanen and Johnsson are not below market value, I don't know where you get that from? Do you even know what market value is?

Oh my bad big dog ...

I was comparing Kapanen and Johnsson's market value to some statistical comparables like:

Andrej Palat - $5,300,000
Yanni Gourde - $5,200,000
Tyler Johnson - $5,000,000
Alex Killorn - $4,500,000

After checking out those fat contracts I realized the Leafs were getting a HELLA BIG DISCOUNT! (Didn't even need the Tampa NMC).

Cirelli is another good comparable ... what do you think he gets? (I'm hearing $5,000,000+ offer sheets for days?)

LMAO.

You're absolutely right. Obviously Dubas was in a tough spot and the trade seemed good at the time but hindsight is 20/20.

Hindsight eh, I guess you didn't notice the 24/25 mins a game Barrie ate up with Muzzin, Rielly and Ceci Injured - heres some hindsight for you without Barrie the Leafs blue line would have been Dermott Holl Sandin Liljegren Marincin Gravel now with any sort of confidence can you honestly say that Blueline gets you through the injuries while crawling back into a playoff spot?

Yeah other teams want him to stick around, he, so easy to fool when making a trade

He’ll most likely move Kappy because grit and work ethic are useless concept for him or so it seems

I was looking though all the teams I made and decided to come back to one just for funwink , cause I changed my mind.

Turns out the Kappy deal was very good, even though it wasn't for a defenceman. He got his defenceman in Brodie. He doesn't need to be fired. This offseason was great for the leafs.
