Rock Solid Defence

Created by: MitchMarner_16
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 14, 2020
Published: Aug. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
That Top Four is ROCK SOLID. It’s gonna be a lot harder to penetrate that defence.

NSH Trade:
Nashville gets a ton of speed and skill in Nylander and Johnsson. They get some bottom 4 defence with tremendous upside. Plus they cash in with a couple of picks as well.
Toronto gets the long coveted RHD they’ve been looking for forever. They also get someone to replace Alex Kerfoot and some depth at RW to compensate for the loss of Nylander.
Ellis = Nylander, Dermott
Jarnkrok = Johnsson, 4th
Watson = 3rd

TBL Trade:
I’ve seen this trade proposed many times. Not much new here. It helps Tampa keep some more of their RFAs.

BUF Trade:
Gives buffalo someone behind Eichel, but doesn’t have to be the sabres. Could be anyone looking for low end middle six centre.

LA Trade:
Gives the leafs some injury depth. Really not a whole lot here to look at.

Please let me know your thoughts on this ACGM.

Ngl this might be the first time I’ve looked at a leafs team and been like sure, why not. All trades seem good - not sure Tampa does that just bc cernak has been solid and I hate betting on prospects but obviously something needs to give with their cap, so I could still see it happening. Good stuff

You know the much heralded and expensive Nashville Dmen allowed just 8 fewer goals than the Leafs last year. So to call an RHD addition "rock solid" is iffy. Watson's effectiveness has declined.
Maybe the trade values are fair (exception the LA trade,) but are the Leafs any better? Left wing extremely weak.

I like Ellis, and watched him back in Windsor. He is a good D but undersized and making 6M... I don't like him for the Leafs.

Nylander is very good and has a lot of upside... i am thinking a higher quality player returns than Ellis... leafs need championship pedigree

What? Ellis is literally 3rd in GAR this year in the entire league. Idk if you noticed but Rinne went from a .918sv% to .895%. Their goaltending was absolutely horrid for a substantial portion of the year. Their entire top 4 had positive corsi this season too, lead by Ellis woth a 54.2% and a 3.6% rel. Thats literally higher than ever defense on the Leafs but Barrie. The Leafs literally havent had a defenseman as good as Ellis in nearly 20 years.

Lol. You literally never say anything good about a Leafs post even if it's fairly decent like this one. You're such a homer and just believe in keeping the roster together and "eventually" they'll win. That's not how it works. Moves need to be made to address areas of weakness. Saying "the left wing is extremely weak"? .. well all the user did was move Johnsson from left side. And he's likely to be moved for cap reasons anyways. It would actually probably be Jarnkrok on the wing and Watson at centre and Jarnkrok is a slight upgrade on Johnsson. Ellis may be a bit undersized but he's proven to still provide good defensive play and Toronto has made it known they don't wanna just acquire a goon for that spot. So that's another upgrade on the team. So why don't you stop bashing the moves and recognize a good post when it's literally right in front of you.

Overall, this is a fairly reasonable post. Few slight changes I might add though. I'd keep Kerfoot over Jarnkrok. I think Kerfoot has a bit more bite to his game that's valuable to this team. I'd probably swap Jarnkrok for a prospect like Tolvanen. The Preds are desperate for offence so I think he could be squeezed out, and I think the value is still fair.

I wouldn't do the Tampa trade at all. I think Liljegren still has some untapped potential and moving him in the division would be pretty risky, I don't think Cernak is worth that risk.

Don't sign Clifford. Reports were out that he wanted $2M x 3 years, and even what you have him signed for cost the team a 2nd round pick. He's just not worth losing a 2nd. The pick is gonna be more useful for Toronto to start adding in younger talent to the system to be able to recycle when needed.

As much as I'd love to see Moore come back, I don't think LA moved him back to the team that traded him. He was moved for a reason. And with guys like Mikheyev and Barabanov that can play the same role, he's really not needed back either.

Good chances Gudas signs in Toronto too apparently so the cap space will be needed to sign him.

Overall pretty good though, one of the better posts I've seen in awhile.

A team in cap trouble getting a good prospect to fill the same position and help sign their other RFA's? ... yeah. Must be a real lame joke then 🙄

I understand Ellis is a good defenceman... but he's already 29 y/o and has 7 years left on his contract. That seems like a huge risk for the Leafs to take on, especially considering defenceman can age and fall off quickly.

The Leafs decline then. If you want a good defensive and an offensive forward, that is what Kerfoot is. He would be worth a late first even

NSH accepts the Watson for a 3rd part of your proposal and declines the rest.

I don't think the "Preds are desperate for offense, so let's ask for their 2nd best offensive prospect" idea works for NSH.

They're GM literally came out and said he wasn't happy with their entire 2nd line and that guys are going to be moved to fix it.. sounds like their in need of offence to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sure, but why would they trade one of their few offensive prospects, if they're looking for offence?

In that same press conference you're referencing, Poile specifically mentioned giving Tolvanen a chance on the 2nd line with Duchene.

Nylander would be a great addition to NSH, but trading Ellis creates a bigger hole than Nylander fills. None of the rest of the pieces coming back here are of much use to the Preds. NSH passes on the OP, and definitely on the Tolvanen version.

The only advantage to Liljegren is that he is expansion exempt. The disadvantage is he is not top 4 ready next year. Tqmpa can very likely sign Cernak to a 1M x 1yr deal essentially making the cap difference meaningless.

... & look where they got Labanc. Players don't sign massive discounted deals like that anymore. Keep dreaming if that's what you think there bud
