Quoting: Windjammer
I'm sure you can see that as a Montreal fan, but from Winnipeg's point of view I don't see it.
Juulsen at this point is a bust, he can't crack Montreal's lineup and I highly doubt he ever will especially coming off a serious eye injury that he hasn't recovered from. He has about a 1% chance of becoming more than a 5/6 defenseman. Kulak is a nothing special bottom pairing guy. Winnipeg has plenty, so he adds no value in the trade. Byron is a cap dump. Domi is okay, but isn't near the same quality as Laine. And the first is nice. So, no holes are plugged with this trade, the Jets just move the hole from center to wing and take a massive hit on quality and age.
It seems like you think the Jets would have no choice but to deal with Montreal and accept whatever lowball offer you deem fair. In reality, the Jets have no reason to move Laine and would entertain other better offers.
Would you accept a similar offer for Suzuki?
Juulsen is not a bust, he has fully recovered from his eye injury and looked very good in the 1 game he played for Laval before the covid shutdown. I think the coaches just were not comfortable with throwing him into NHL play after the return with only 1 game played in almost a year. Juulsen will return to Laval to start the season and if things go well will be promoted quickly again.
Kulak is a good 2nd pairing guy as well and as a team with a weak defense he would be an upgrade to Winnipegs left side.
Byron is not a cap dump unless you define a cap dump as a speedy middle 6 forward with solid defensive abilities and is a penalty killing specialist. Something else Winnipeg desperately needs is speed and defensive forwards.
Domi fills your 2C role nicely and has been sought after by many Jets fans ACGM's. Yes the hole in the forward group is move from center to wing but top 6 wingers are much easier to find than a top 6 center.
16th OVA has the same value as Domi and can be used to fill the hole on wing that was left by Laine leaving or could be flipped easily for a top 6 winger.
The difference between a package like this for Laine and one for Suzuki is that Suzuki is much much harder to replace as top line centers don't grow on trees. At least 10 wingers in this year's draft have potential to be 25+ goal scorers. Lafreniere, Stutzle, Raymond, Perfetti, Holtz, Quinn, Mercer, Jarvis, Gunler and Halloway four of which are in that 16th pick range. So yes I can see the Jets considering this package.
