can we please stop including "the Leafs sign Pietro/a defender" in trades for their good players? that doesnt count as trade value for a guy like Nylander

Honestly, if Palmieri had a little bit of a longer contract I would be pretty close to agreeing to that Nylander trade. A lot of people on here undervalue him and it is easy for me to say that as a Leafs fan but his stats back it up. Palmieri would be a good option on the second line and much cheaper, but having to resign him I'd worry about a raise that could end up hurting Toronto as they already know the cap won't go up and they have to worry about guys like Rielly, Hyman, Sandin, Liljegren, and Robertson who will need increases

It’s an explanation for why the leafs would trade Nylander for prospects/cheaper contracts

Leafs probably wouldn’t be able to resign him. But he’d be an excellent replacement for Nylander next season if Toronto can add pietrangelo

if you need to explain why you're trading a player for value, then you arnt trading for enough value

Subban to Ottawa would be interesting. The Sens only pay $1 million more over the next 2 years (and save $8 million for the next 2), but I don’t know how willing Melnyk would be to pony up the $6 million signing bonus next year.

Right, but that is the issue. Then you continuously need to be chasing a winger for Tavares who can come close to the production that Nylander would put up for 5 more seasons. If Palmieri had still 3 more seasons it'd be a close deal, but 1 year is scary

That’s dumb. Value is relative to a team’s needs. If Toronto signs pietrangelo, their biggest need is cap flexibility. Trading Nylander for futures only makes sense if they use that cap room to add a top 4 RHD

could do a sign and trade, as a Devils fan I would take this trade and run.

well no, what's dumb is thinking the leafs would move Nylander because of cap space instead of worse players that can be replaced easier. especially if part of the nylander return is a rental

Value wise the Leafs lose the trade just considering what they get from NJ. Only one year of Palmeiri. But if you add in the fact that it allows Them to sign Petro then it can be a good deal for the Leafs. Nylander and Palmeiri are similar calibre players.

Its actually a solid trade for the Leafs. Merkley has a lot of potential, Arizona's 1st would be something the Leafs would want (no way they're getting 7OA unless Dubas and Shanahan does something that NJ can't pass up) and if the Leafs can sign Palmieri for cheap ($4 million/year) then hey I'd take it. MacLeod is a nice addition as well

Nylander is signed at $6.96 million x 5 more years.
Palmieri is signed at $4.65 million x 1 more year. His next contract would probably be similar to Chris Kreider or TJ Oshie. Say $6.25 million x 6/7 years.

NJD could just resign Palmieiri (at least for next few years, Palms and Nylander would be a wash), keep the pick and give Merkley and McLeod time to develop.

It is years 4-6...you'd be gambling on.

Tough call.
