Dermott is NOT underrated. He is still a number 5 (with number 4 upside). His weakness has always been his decision making and the thing is he hasn't exactly fixed that up until now

I didn’t plan on reviews even as civil as this one. I think after you had Dermott on your team you would see why the trade works.

I would not mind this.

Dermott has the potential to become a similar player to Nate Schmidt, and Buffalo is rebuilding so the 15oa pick is helpful with that

Toronto gets a young D to be with Muzzin and on a cheap ELC.

14th in the league in gar, good numbers all around. I haven’t seen any of this poor decision making. But I do hear it being echoed a lot.

It doesnt work. Jokiharju is not available unless it's stupid. Moving up 25 spots and getting a lesser player, who is 2 years older and needs a contract doesnt interest us

Ah yes, citing an advanced stat to base your opinion of a player. Analytics mean next to nothing without context provided with the eye test

Meh. Not a fan. Would rather keep Jokiharju...and considering that 2nd is a 38th overall pick, I'd probably keep it over Dermott too.

Just ruffling a few feathers with a smart trade.

Sabres get a young top 4lhd with potential to be even better. If Keefe is not going to use him on the right this trade makes perfect sense for the leafs. If keefe does plan to use him as rielly’s partner there is no way I make this trade.

Jokiharju is Dahlin‘s future partner for the next decade possibly. Dermot would help us, but not at the cost of Jokiharju. Frankly I think Toronto would be thrilled to get our second round pick for him alone. And that says enough.

Passes the eye test with flying colours. Trust me the eye test is my first go to. It’s a hard point to argue though. Dermott carries his partners. Is great both ways and likes to lay big hits. Great passer great skater great positioning and awareness.

Why would a team that needs defence trade away their best young Dman for a pick?

It wouldn’t be the first time Toronto made a stupid trade. But making it within the division just magnifies it’s stupidity. That said I don’t think division rivals will be making trades with each other, certainly not significant ones.

If I had to compare him to another Dman right now it would be grzelcyk, obviously more potential for growth though.

Well they already have, just nothing significant yet. But there hasn’t been any real big moves yet.
Show me an nhl team that hasn’t made a stupid trade...

Of course you don’t, that’s why he is underrated.

Dermott +14 his partner Barrie -7 food for thought.

With averaging a little under 5 minutes in ice time per game...it'd be just sad if he was more of a minus D in there.

Even Ceci, you know, the pylon, was +7...

Yup, ceci was actually good defensively. Dermott averaged much more than 5 minutes of ice time. Think he was over 17. This is a mixed up stat. He started out playing under 10min a game when he came back from injury to start the season. Then Babs kept him under 15. Keefe gave him more ice time and he looked great holding the fort during injuries. His average doesn’t justify how well he was playing as our top Dman when Rielly and muzzin went down.

This is why I said in a post above. “IF” they are not going to play him on the right the move makes sense. If they are going to let him be Reilly’s partner and flourish then I see no point in moving down in the draft.

Yeah I meant 5 minutes less than Barrie. Barrie was 22 mins per game, Dermott 17.

Barrie was on PP1... hence the extra minutes.
