Prospect swap

Trades
OTT
  1. Carlsson, Gabriel
Additional Details:
Both have been sort of underwhelming but still have promise. Cbj fans seem to have given up on Carlsson even though dmen like him always take longer to develop, while Balcers doesn't have super high upside and might be outdepthed. Who says no here?

I say you send Balcers along with a pick to Philly for Nicholas Aube-Kubel

Prospect trade proposals are always so much more thought-provoking than the usual Nylander-for-Parayko trades. Thanks for this.

Doesn't ottawa have too many bottom 6 guys at this point?

I'm enjoying these prospect swap threads, thanks for posting this!

If Carlsson was a right shot I'd do this in a heartbeat to give J. Brown and JBD some long term competition for the shutdown partner for Chabot, but I think Ottawa is too flush with LD to make this trade (Chabot, Brannstrom, Sanderson, Wolanin, Lajoie). Balcers is probably more likely to make the team as the 3LW than Carlsson is as the 3LD, and he definitely won't get higher than that ever.

Not a chance

Gabriel Carlsson is on the way to bust status. He's going to be 24 soon and has 23 NHL games, and he's headed straight back to the AHL next season because he hasn't succeeded there yet. He played in 6 NHL games last season, and was a healthy scratch 21 times, and all 10 playoff games.

Balcers has succeeded at the AHL level and will be given every chance to make the NHL roster. After recovering from an injury, he played 15 games with only 1 healthy scratch, including the final eight games of the season, averaging 13:47 toi in those eight games.

The prospect being given a chance to succeed in the NHL, or the prospect that can't get out of the AHL or healthy scratched?

Are we suppose to assume here that Balcers isn't a bust, because that seems pretty absurd to me. He's 23, a forward, and hasn't really done anything, I'm pretty sure he's at replacement level value.

As for Carlson my two knocks on him are he doesn't use his huge frame, and he doesn't skate well. Do I think he'll be an NHL player. No. But I hardly call Balcers one either.

Balcers is already capable of playing well on an NHL 3rd/4th line. He's shown good results in his NHL stints, and he's clearly too good for the AHL. I have o doubt he's at the very least a capable 4th liner. I actually think he's going to be a very effective 3rd line scorer, though it's extremely unlikely he does it in Ottawa given how they stand at the LW position. I think he's going to be one of those guys who blows up for one fantastic season with Seattle, then settles in as a guy who can give 12-16 goals and about as many assists in a bottom six role. He likely isn't a particularly valuable trade piece, but he's a very solid depth player, and he's got the ability to be a more than capable regular bottom six forward.

Compared to Gabe Carlsson in any case I'd take Balcers 10 times out of 10. Balcers can be a regular feature on an NHL team. I don't think Carlsson is even capable of that.
