He’s a good player, we just can’t afford him. It’s much more cost effective to have someone like Juulsen, Fleury, or Ouellet on the roster.

Why do you want to get rid of Kulak so badly? He seems like a good player...
I think the easiest way to look at things is that if one Habs D is injured when the Habs need to submit their start of season rosters, then Kulak stays. If everyone is healthy, he probably goes.
He's played great for 2 straight seasons, especially when alongside Petry, but Edmundson projects to be a more complete player in the same role, and we need to give playing time to young D like Romanov, Mete, and Juulsen this season or risk losing the latter two to waivers. Bergevin's always big on organizational depth at D though, so if I were a betting man right now, I'd guess that Kulak isn't going anywhere. But if I were Ottawa (for example), I'd easily give up a 4th/5th rounder or more for Kulak (making $1.4mm in salary, before reductions, this season). He would be a decent upgrade to Mike Reilly, just one example. And if the Habs don't move him, I'd be waiting to see which Habs D go on waivers to scoop them up if and when they do. I don't believe the Habs will risk putting Mete or Juulsen on waivers, so that would leave Kulak the odd man out on a hypothetical 21 man roster.
Chiarot - Weber
Edmundson - Petry
Romanov - Juulsen
Mete
(you can switch Romanov and Edmundson around as needed).
