This is a much worse team. Andersen is a very good goalie, Bernier is a backup and Pesce is just a #4. Hard pass.

If we're retaining salary as well, it'll cost you more than a 4th.

Calling Pesce "just a #4" is a very false statement, thats like me calling Tavares "just a 2nd line center"

Pesce is the most overrated player in the league. He's a good player but he's had the benefit of playing with Slavin who is the real star in Carolina. This past season away from Slavin, Pesce was the only player in Carolina who had a negative xG%. His advance stats are all system driven and his offense is basically non existent. Pesce is a good support player that is all. Comparing him to JT, in the manner above, is ridiculous. JT is a top 15 centre in the league, Pesce isn't a top 30 defenceman in the league. He would be at best 3rd best in TO and I am not sure he is better than Brodie. Pesce is as I have said the most overrated player in hockey.

Hot Taeks! Gotta give you credit for your imagination.

He was paired with Gardiner and Edmondson for a lot of time, and Gardiner struggled mightily at the beginning of the season, and Edmondson was a sieve on defense.

I’m not trying to say Pesce is the best player on earth, but he’s a legitimate top 4 defensive defenseman on a 4x4 deal. Freddie is a goalie coming off a down year in a contract season. I can’t help you if you don’t see the value inequity here.

Canes hard pass.

This proves my statement, Pesce needs top level partners to be great otherwise he's just a good defenceman. Slavin makes him awesome and Pesce got the credit, put him with Edmonson and Gardiner and it's their fault he isn't good. Andersen had a couple of rough patches but his career proves he's a very good goalie. Goaltending is and continues to be the single biggest flaw for the canes. So why does this trade make sense for TO? They have Rielly and Brodie and Muzzin all top pairing defenceman, and Holl who was a good shutdown partner with Muzzin. We need Andersen way more than Pesce who we would hope would be as good or better than Holl.

Pesce’s most common line mates the last two years are Edmundsson & Gardiner so not sure how Slavin carries him.

And Pesce hasn't been all that good since he was moved away from Slavin. Pesce is just a 2nd pair defenceman, good sure but he's treated like some elite monster which he is not nor will ever be.

That guy knows nothing, just ignore him. Pesce's played with Faulk, Gardiner and Edmundson, not Slavin 🤣🤣

A. he had a shoulder dislocation during that time.
2. he plays against as many top line players as Slavin with an inferior line mate (offensively and defensively)
3. most overhyped defender is so laughable, the guy is on pace for 30 points a year while not getting any measurable PP time.
4. Edmundson will drag your xG% down as he provides no offense.

Joel Edmundson is an analytical anchor. He will drag all your stats through the floor.

Make all the points you want about the stats. After Dougie and Pesce went down with injury and Slavin had to be paired with inferior players his stats suffered too. Guess he lost his stills in the second half of the season.

Top 4 defenseman on a 4x4 deal >> Goalie on expiring contract who has struggled and will more than likely be looking for a raise. Good luck to you either way.

Pesce is the hero, got it. Results don't matter just opinion. Slavin is your star and Pesce is just a middle pair defender. A good player sure but not the all-star you guys love to hype him as.

Pesce is a guy who can succeed with better linemates. On his own he is not a top pair defender. He's a second pair defender.

opinions from posters who dont watch him or see how he is utilized, like yourself, dont matter.

No one here believes he is a hero / all-star. Heck Slavin isnt wasnt an all-star until Hamilton got hurt. Guys that dont put up 50+ points arent defensive all-stars. Cool story.

Pesce hasn’t played significant minutes with Slavin since the 17-18 season. His best season was 18-19, where guess what, he didn’t regularly play with Slavin. Slavin has been stapled to Hamilton since they acquired him.

If you’re going to try to argue a point, at least get your facts straight.

Slavin is and has been your best defenceman for the past 3-4 years. He is a beast and I'd say one of the top 20 defenceman in the league. Pesce is a good player but he isn't some stalwart elite defenceman. He's a very good secondary player, he'll never drive a pair but will be a great partner for a better player, like he was with Slavin.

On a different note, if all canes fans think Slavin is just okay and both Pesce and Hamilton are better, they disrespect their best defenceman.

In his best year his strength of competition was less than Zaitsev's in the same season. Meaning Slavin got the tough matchups. Why? Because he is the true defensive beast in Carolina. I just don't get why cane fans are always so defensive when it comes to Pesce and to a lesser extent Hamilton. I am not at all saying he sucks, he doesn't, he's very good but he is not a world beating superstar worth a pile of assets. He's a secondary player who does very good at supporting better players. That is a fine thing in itself but whenever some doesn't praise him as the second coming of Jesus you guys get all mad. I just don't get it.

what are you talking about? now you are making up narratives. Slavin is better but using All-star as a measuring stick, like you did, is just silly. Again unless a defender scores 50 points they arent an all-star (unless in a very large market). Again the metric is silly because our best defender, Slavin, wasnt a serious contender as an all-star his whole career until Hamilton got hurt.

I am not using allstar as a measure of worth. It's simply a noun for the apparent worth of Pesce. He is just a good 2nd pair defender who can work on the top pair with a legit top pair player. That is what he is. Nothing more. And yet he is looked at on this site as a super hero. He's been called the best defensive defenceman in hockey. He isn't he is not even close. He's just a great secondary piece.

Every one of your nine comments in this thread concede that Pesce is a top-4 defenceman, and in line with that evaluation, the OP has him at #2 RD in this construction. So the straw man you've set up about the contention that some people consider Pesce All-Star material and you don't is entirely irrelevant to the issue here -- which is that an admitted top-4 RD on a $4 million contract for four years is worth lots, lots more than a barely-above-average rental goalie on a higher cap hit.

I just don't see the need for him at the cost of Andersen. What makes this team better? Pesce instead of Holl at the cost of Andersen? That is a worse team easily. Is Pesce worth more than Andersen? Depending on the situation. Without a contract extension in place probably but if he has 2-3 more years at 5 million, Andersen is the bigger impact than Pesce. As for him being top 4, I hate that term, I think he's a 2nd pair defenceman who can succeed on a top pair with a #1 defenceman. He isn't a top pair defenceman on his own.
