Imo it depends on what Colorado plans to do with the cap saved.

Seems like a bad trade for Colorado. Exchanging Cole for Pateryn is a downgrade and they didn't really need to save any cap since they're both UFA's. Even worse if they had to retain salary on Cole. Only reasons I can think of to make this trade is creating more cap space for a TDL splash or making room for Byram.

Not a fan, but in Joe we trust. On face value it's a loss for the Avs. All depends on Joe's next move.

It's a savvy trade by Sakic.

Cole was going to be our 8th Dman once Byram and Johnson were ready to play, and it made zero sense to have $4.25m sitting in the press box burning capspace.

Sakic also has a reputation of being solid with players, and likely did Cole a favour by trading him somewhere he'd get to play in a contract year, rather than simply waiving him and letting him fizzle into obscurity when he needs to be playing to earn his next contract. These things matter when players are considering where to sign as UFA's.

The cap savings are important too. $1.2m will allow for a 22 or 23 man active roster instead of just 21, meaning that there's way more flexibility in moving players up and down to the taxi squad.

Not to mention that $1.2m in capspace will accrue around $6m in capspace by the deadline, meaning that Sakic basically created the circumstances by which he can be a serious player on the trade market from now until the deadline. All for a minor downgrade at 8D.

As for Pateryn himself, the fact that he's a PK'ing unit and a RHS is obviously really beneficial, as it gives us a RHS PKer to insert into the lineup in the event that Johnson is injured. We really missed that against Dallas, and this is the insurance.
