Chiarelli gets way too much heat on this board. He still has his fingerprints all over Boston’s team.

-and gave away Seguin
-and gave away Boychuk

IN EDM:
-signed an atrocious Sekera deal
-ridiculously overpaid for Reinhart, giving the Isles Barzal and Beauvillier
-overpaid Russell
-gave away one of the worst contracts in the league in Lucic
-overpaid for Strome
-overpaid for Larsson
-destroyed the Oilers' depth

If you want to just cherry pick the bad moves of a GM, you can go on forever for any GM. It’s a really stupid tactic.

Also, you listed a couple moves that aren’t that bad.

I wasn’t necessarily a huge fan of the seguin return, but they absolutely HAD to trade Seguin. And it really hurts the story of the trade that eriksson instantly got a horrid concussion (once he returned to normal he was a 30-30 guy with elite defense), and Sweeney started down his path of horrible moves trading Reilly smith. The big error was over valuing joe morrow. If the trade was eriksson, smith, Fraser, and a first instead of morrow, I’m okay with it.

The boychuk trade was awesome. A+. Fantastic. Most overrated player in bruins history. A year later he signs one of the worst contracts in the league, and the bruins have a couple second rounders.

Pastrnak, Bergeron, Marchand, Grzelcyk, Miller, Krejci, and Rask were all either drafted, acquired, or signed to their current deal by Chiarelli. Kinda important guys. (I think you’re smart enough not to bring Gorton into this, which is why i haven’t mentioned him until now. That take still makes me laugh)

Oh the take that gorton, acting as interim GM after Chiarelli was hired but couldn’t officially take over because of the conflict of interest, basically built the entire bruins franchise in a month, yet it took him a decade to get a look somewhere as GM.

I wasn't aware of any of that...

He was working for Ottawa when he was hired. The league wouldnt let him officially take over until after the draft. It’s a pretty poorly kept secret that he was calling the shots through gorton until he officially took the helm.

Gorton has to be one of the luckiest yet most incompetent GM's in the league.

He's basically had a superstar LW and a 1 RHD fall out of the sky into his lap, along with not one, but TWO top 2 lottery picks, and yet he STILL hasn't managed to fix the glaring hole at C.

Building a team with wingers is the reverse of how a team should be built. Had he done the smart thing and traded Kreider (thankfully Sakic didn't give them #16 which turned into Newhook!) and sorted out the 2C issue then NYR's situation would be looking far better right now. Hiring that coach and sticking with him is also pretty bad.

Gorton is really bad. Can't imagine he will last a year...maybe NYR signs Chiarelli.

Its one thing.... that NYR had to bring on old vet to babysit their GM.

Its another when.... the guy they bring is the author of "Hockey for Dummies"

Chiarelli really did set back the Oilers by YEARS. He was handed a golden ticket and tried to expedite the process. Didn't do his research on Reinhart, and how it worked out is he moved Hall, Eberle, a mid 1st, high 2nd and in return had Adam Larsson to show for it. One of the biggest asset management fails I can think of.

He planned his rosters around 18 year olds on multiple occasions. Puljujarvi was rushed and when Bouchard was drafted, Chiarelli viewed that as a plug and play top 4 RHD instead of actually trying to acquire a legitimate top 4 defenseman. It took Todd McLellan refusing to dress Bouchard for him to get sent down.

Sure he made some good moves. Talbot was a good bet that had a great run in 2017 but then predictably regressed. Pat Maroon was a good move that worked out for a couple seasons but a 25+ goal pace for him wasn't sustainable
I understand why he signed Lucic, but it was too long and everyone knew it was going to be boat anchor after 3 or 4 years. And it turned out horribly after just 2 years...

He tried so hard to replicate that big heavy hockey style, instead of building around the strengths his current players had. And in his final year he was just throwing darts trying to save his job and unnecessarily threw away drafts picks and solid depth players for scraps.
