Saving Dumba from the Kraken and helping another teams playoff odds

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 9, 2021
Published: Mar. 9, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There is a very good chance that with his cap hit at 6 million and now that he is in his prime, Minnesota might have to do something about Matt Dumba before it's too late.

Minnesota has a good team but with the expansion draft on the horizon, you can only protect so many good players.

In this post, I picked the LA Kings as the team to trade Dumba before the deadline.

The LA Kings have a ton of blue clip prospects, they have the cap space to take on Dumba and Minnesota won't be in LA's division after this season.

Also, if Drew Doughty goes down, the Kings can replace Doughty with Dumba on the top pair until Doughty comes back.

Right now according to moneypuck.com, the odds that the Kings make the playoffs is at 30%, but by adding Dumba, it will go over 50% at some point this season.

Easy.

I modelled this trade on the EK65 trade with San Jose.

Dumba produces about the same as what EK65 does today but plays a much more physically and defensively minded type of game.

He is also paid slightly less than when EK65 was with Ottawa and he is still under contract for another 2 seasons after this one.

Unlike EK65, who was traded to San Jose with just one year left on his deal.

I know I'm going to be torn to shreds by fans on both sides, but that's part of the business of being an ACGM and as a GM in real life ;)

I rest my case :)

Or the secret third option that no one seems to understand: we protect him.

That looks less likely with Brodin getting a huge contract with a full blown NMC.

The article I shared suggests Dumba might not get protected.

Make of it what you will.

Brodin was going to be protected anyway, why would that have an effect?

The only relevant question is whether he should be protected over Greenway, Foligno and Hartman, and the answer is a resounding yes.

For the record, I'm not saying he won't be traded. What I'm saying is that, if he's not traded, he absolutely should be protected along with the other three defensemen, Fiala, and Eriksson Ek.

This is waaaaaayy too much for Matt Dumba. A 2nd and Kaliyev would be fair value, and as a Kings fan, I don't know that I'd want them to even do that.

Wasn't paying attention because two different accounts working in tandem and that are likely run by the same person decided to attack me over an idea that has nothing to do with their team.

You'd think they (he?) would have better things to do with their day.

No it doesn't. Wild GM has made it clear he's prepared to do 4 & 4.

You can have your opinion, doesn't make it trye

You can also have your opinion. The article says what it says.

If you don't like reality, then I don't know what to tell you then.

You seem to place all your trust in Bill Guerin to deliver the Wild to the promised land.

Tell that to the Minnesota fans who are asking for a top 6 centre plus a high first.

It's not Minnesota fans. All you have to do is google.com

Go there & read the articles stating our gm is asking for top 6c, or high 1st with top 6c prospect

Whether you choose to believe or listen to reality is on you

& you seem to care too much about believing an article, bogus articles speculating

So you are using fake reasoning. You can't use speculating as fact

Who, exactly, is asking for this? Dumba has been playing very well and fans of other teams on this site seem to think he's an awful defender, which isn't true, but in no way, shape, or form is Dumba worth a top 6 center PLUS a high first...

This article is from September. A lot can change in 6 months... Besides, you go into every thread and proclaim the Wild aren't moving Dumba unless it's for a top 6 center and this is what Guerin said about that:

On whether a Dumba trade would have to be for a No. 1 or 2 center or could be for futures or a scoring winger: “It’s just got to make sense for us. In any trade I make, would you prefer something that fills a void? Yeah. But sometimes you just have to make a trade for the player that you feel is going to make (sense). Adjust." - Guerin

He never once says anything like "we're only moving Dumba for a top 6 center". Guerin has long said he is willing to make trades that he feels improve the team.

Why did I have ro read that far to get to this? Why does this AGM exist?

Minnesota is going 4-4-1 and Dumba get protected. End of story.

Yet it was reported he turned down numerous top 6 wingers. He also said he wouldn't trade dumba unless he gets his asking price
