Retool in Columbus

Created by: Ajp_18
Team: 2021-22 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 15, 2021
Published: Apr. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Step -1: fire torts (or let him walk at seasons end)

Step 2: extend Jones, Werenski and Merzlinkins (or agree to extensions to be signed July 1)

Step 2.5: expansion draft (Robinson or Kukan selected)

Step 3: draft; 1st pick (CBJ) - Center, 2nd pick (TOR) RHD, 3rd pick (TBL) BAP (best player)

Step 4: trade for Danault signing rights

Step 4: extend Laine (one season, still keeps him as an RFA)

Step 5: resign other RFAs; Peeke, Stenlund, and so on.

Step 6: don’t overreact and let the kids learn.

Columbus isn’t a rebuilder, they stumbled at the start due to the off ice (the turned on ice) issue with PLD, and the team never really go going. Laine was thrown into a whole new situation that he wasn’t 100% prepared for and was learning how to be the guy and the focal point of the offense thus the number one target defensively, something he’s never had to do in his professional career. This season was an adjustment period after the issues to start the season, to the entire team under performing (except Bjorkstrand who seems to be the only bright spot this year as he’s getting better and better each season), this team was just never a team, partly to blame on the Covid restrictions, they just never seemed to gel as a group.

Would Columbus be interested in doing one of their goalies for Ristolainen with maybe some salary retained?

Do you think that’s all we can get for korpi. I see him as being a bigger asset than that but hey maybe not. He’s had a rough season.

Possibly, though I’m not super high on Risto but he and Gavrikov would be a solid pair IMO. I just don’t want to guess on the price for Risto as most Buffalo fans love him and never want to trade him or hate him and trade him for nothing.

I can't think of a better fit for Danault, aside from the Habs of course, but there's no way we can offer him that much

Potentially, he’s more of a 1b goalie imo and he’s had a rough season numbers wise, but someone might over pay for him if they lose their backup in expansion draft and don’t necessarily have a viable 3rd option.

Think Korpi will net you more than Rittich did for the Flames.

I'd personally keep him. He's less likely to pull a Bobrovsky than Elvis is after 2021-22 season.

Yeah, that's why I think MB will try to extend him before he hits the market. but 6.5 is a lot of money for Danault.

He is still needed in MTL, they might trade Drouin and Byron to clear cap space for Danault. KK and Suzy are not ready for yet.... they can't take the defensive assignment of Danault... and they don't produce offensively enough to compensate

Read description under step 2, resign the key UFAs or agree to the extension that will be signed on July 1.

Imo Elvis wants to be the undisputed number one, moving Korpisalo does that. Merzlinkins would stay to be that in Columbus, plus he has Kevleniks, the other Latvian as his backup.

I don't think he leaves Montreal. I think he is happy to be playing near his home and will sign for slightly less money as long as the term and conditions (bonuses and NTC/NMC) he want are met to stay.

        I did.

I'm just skeptic about them doing so.

Hasn't he turned down a $6Mil extension there, though?

Also, I think CBJ would only be able to sign him to a 7 year max contract.
