Why is Toronto the team adding here? Marner's a top 10 player in the league, Barzal isn't. & you think the difference between the two is a guy that can play top 4 minutes and is on a great contract? Doesn't seem like Toronto would even consider this.

Two years is important. It aligns with the window where toronto has Matthews at his current deal. Barzal is an RFA when his deal is up. Don’t like the contract demands? Trade him then. He’ll likely be worth more than he is now.

or it's better to have the guy that you know what he makes before Matthews needs to be re-signed. Marner is worth more than Barzal and a contract argument is a crappy knock on the value.

considering that was his comparable when he signed his deal he's currently on and Barzal's qualifying offer will be $10M when he expires.. I'd say it's not out of the realm that he's near Marner's $10.9M at all..

Marner does drive his own line consistently actually. When Matthews was hurt, he was the guy that helped Tavares wake up. & it's funny that Islanders' fan say Marner is a ghost in the playoffs but how many goals does Barzal have this playoff?

Marner is a top 5 scorer that plays above average defence, runs the PP, kills penalties, is a leader in the locker room, a community guy, etc. .. it's not a bad contract.

oh I definitely have lol - Barzal currently has Leo Komarov on his lw. Marner had Matthews and hyman. It's a bit different. Barzal has been clutch in the playoffs over the last 3 seasons.

I’m not sure what motivation NYI has for making this trade? Barzal is the number 1 C in their team, they have decent winger depth, and this trade doesn’t make them any better. On top of that, they have several bad contracts (komarov, ladd, etc.) that will come off the books before Barzal re-sings.

Barzal fills a bigger area of need, he fits their cap space better, he is part of their core, the islanders aren’t looking for a shake up, and the trade doesn’t really make them any better. Why would they even entertain this idea?

Let’s go a bit deeper on this. Marner is the second highest paid winger in the NHL, highest paid RW. All the other guys that are remotely close to him were either coming off a bridge deal, or a UFA deal, when Marner signed his off his entry. The guys that are close to him are all better. Then consider that guys that signed around the time that he signed off their entry deal just took so much less. Draisaitl at 8.5, pastrnak at 6.6 etc

Let's assume for a minute, that this trade did happen. It won't, but let's pretend. Toronto would need to take a bad contract back in return just to make the numbers work not add.

Marner for Barzal, and Ladd makes the most sense. Like I said though no way this deal happens. There's no way we'd give you a draft pick on top of that deal either. Barzal would be a 90 to 100 point man if he wasn't playing in the Islanders system.

Lol you do realize that who you play with does matter. Leo komarov is arguably the worst offensive player in the NHL. Nylander didn’t have a problem scoring , marner plays with two top line talents and he couldn’t get it done against a mediocre montreal defense. The issue is marner can’t handle pressure.

210 min is not a small sample size so it doesn’t matter. It proves he can’t drive his own line. You’re more than welcome to go and find stats that prove this wrong.

What Isles777 said, plus the Isles are right against the cap they can't afford to take Marners contract, plus Holls, plus Engvalls. It's just not possible. They've got RFA's to re-sign as well.

Dubas has made it clear that he's not trading Marner. Isles say no anyways.
