Detroit passes, you're not getting a Mid 2nd for Travis Dermott. I'd rather bring back Marc Staal or Jon Merrill then Dermott.

Lol no they don't. That's the going rate for a serviceable 4-5-6 dman with potential, cheap and controllable. They factor the value of this in and chances of a 2nd being better

I don't understand traded Hallander just so the Leafs could keep Holl over Dermot.
Sorry the Leafs just can't spend 9m on two big UFA and have a 20 man roster. Sign Ullmark and keep Mikheyev, Dermot and Engvall.
Don't know why so many Leaf fans blame the bottom enders and inexpensive players for the Leafs failures.

It's okay you still have Engvall and Mikheyev.

that deal makes no sense for detroit. why trade a 2nd round pick for a bottom pair defenseman in the middle of a rebuild?

they gave up Hallander to protect Kerfoot tears of joy
No one informed Dubas all leafs fans have been trying to trade him for the past year.

Honestly, horrible decision making on the part of both TOR and PIT.
They really out thought themselves.
At least PIT got a decent prospect out of it. I don't really mind losing McCann. It's the Tanev part that stings.

I'm watching the draft. Seem like Kraken aren't selecting too many big contracts (so far). They saving cap for UFA signings.

they really didn't.
I don't know, maybe they didn't find value there?
Honestly I think there were a few guys I would have gone after.
But we'll see if they made any trades soon. That's really where VGK made a killing. So far I haven't seen anything.
I don't think they just up and agreed to take 5 million from TB on a player who isn't really that good.

None of the big contracts are worth it.

I kinda like Gourde. He's done well in a secondary role with Tampa. But if he is a first liner with Seattle...well that might be difficult for him. But of course 1st centres aren't cheap and difficult to acquire.

So many of the big contracts were signed pre Covid when in 21/22 the cap was expected to be 90m. Seattle can go UFA hunting...this year or next and get much better value than some of the current players that have big money and term.

I think it's more the question of what else could they have done with 5 million.
For me, the difference between picking Foote and Gourde was minimal in the talent section and maximal in the cap hit.
Something seems off there. There is a balance I have to at least speculate is working its way out at some point.

The big money guys were mostly older rental or rental+1 players, not (possibly) long term solutions. The others are the gross contracts: RyJo, Duchy, Price, etc.

This is the route I had SEA going: younger, cheaper, grind you to death team.

We traded for Leddy and addressed the need for a LD, I don't see Yzerman paying to get another one
