I get that you want a good return for Subban but he really isnt good at this stage in his career and every trade you cited was either for a better player or a big overpayment. Subban was traded from nashville when he was a better player than he is now for two 2nds and two throwaway players, so why would he garner a 1st and a decent prospect now? Devils will get a 2nd, or a 3rd and a mediocre prospect for him.
2019 trade: 3 years x $9 million AVV, $26 million total in cash
vs.
2021 trade (50%): 1 year x $4.5 million AAV, $1 million in cash
2021 trade (25%): 1 year x $2.25 million AAV, $500k in cash
Also, Nashville dumped him because they had to extend Josi and wanted to sign Duchene....and only had $3 million in cap space

You could retain 50%, still would not give you more than a 2nd and 4th. And you’d be taking Moore.
I hope Donny is smarter than the rumors.
Luckily B’s only have 1m in cap space.
The Bruins comp had Subban at 75% retained costing 1st, 3rd, 4th (to third team).
I think that sounds about right to me, especially if Moore is added.

I think the complication for trading Subban will be retaining 50% of salary still brings him down only to 4.5 mil. Finding a third party to take on 2.25 mil will be the trick in the Devils trading him this year. On the flip side, I fully expect the Devils to make a bit of a run this year for a Wildcard spot. Might as well use him as a rental.
I think Devils end up keeping him as well.
The money is all paid out, only making $2 million in real money, so its kind of a cheap rental to keep him (renting from ourselves).
NJD could even re-sign him for a year, maybe two while our young guys make their way up to NHL.
