Cap Strapped and Bad

Created by: ragger_lord
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 21, 2021
Published: Nov. 22, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rumour has it Bo may want out of we continue to suck.

New Mgmt and coaching, call this a lost season, move our older but still valuable players for prospects and picks and try to clear some cap space.

Re-build the core around Hughes/Petey/Demko. If we're lucky we catch another window at the tail end of Pod/Schneider/Bowers ELC's.

Boeser could be on the block for the right price as well but I'm less eager to move him.
Trades
1.
VAN
  1. Barron, Justin
  2. Bowers, Shane
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (COL)
COL
  1. Miller, J.T. ($2,600,000 retained)
2.
VAN
  1. Schneider, Braden
  2. 2022 1st round pick (NYR)
NYR
  1. Horvat, Bo ($2,750,000 retained)
3.
VAN
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
Additional Details:
Ottawa gets the better player with the bigger contract. Do the Canucks need to add the sweetener?
OTT
  1. Myers, Tyler
  2. 2022 4th round pick (VAN)
4.
VAN
  1. Ritchie, Nick
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (TOR)
TOR
  1. Pearson, Tanner ($750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Toronto gets to dump Richie's contract and get a better player for the same AAV.

Not really sure if they would be interested in Tanner for 3 years tho. Likewise, Van maybe doesn't want to retain for 3 years.

Not enough for Horvat.

Also Myers contract is shorter so no need to make that deal.

See I thought that about Horvat but then I thought, why would Horvat be worth more then Miller when they both expire as UFAs at the same time when Miller's a much better producer.

Unless we wait to trade him after July 1st, with a pre agreed upon extension he's just a bonafide rental.

I had it in my head the Myers and Zaitsev contracts ended at the same time haha. In that case maybe there's another trade parter out there.

What's going wrong there? I mean I get the lineup has some issues but I really don't think it's as bad as their record is either, have they quit on Green or do his systems suck or what?

I value Horvat more than Miller because he's our captain, leader and organizational face. Miller is closer to the outside looking in compared to Horvat, Hughes, Pettersson, Boeser and Demko. I would imagine a Horvat trade (if it happens) would be in the offseason anyway.

PK has been flaming hot garbage, Pettersson hasn't been great and attention to detail. Tough to tell if its the players giving up on the coach, GM or if there's a problem in the locker room.

That's because they do end a the same time. Other poster is dead wrong. Both contracts end in 2024, which is why I don't think it makes any sense for Ottawa. Myers is large and would almost certainly be a marginal upgrade over Zaitsev, but "better than Zaitsev" is an extremely low bar to clear, and it still doesn't make him any good, or at all worth adding 1.5mil to the contract Zaitsev is on. The only options that really make any sense for Ottawa at this stage would be to either add an asset (2nd rounder?) To get out from the Zaitsev contract completely, or to just buy him out, and if they were to go the buyout route, Zaitsev's contract is WAY more buyout friendly.

Myers is not enough of an upgrade over Zaistez to make this move. Also Zaistev is liked in the lookerroom which makes it w worse trade for OTT.

Yeah I gotcha. Sounds like maybe not quite a good fit. I'll keep searching for a way to move Myers hahaha

Yeah that's a reasonable stance, I just wonder how the rest of the league feels. There's a lot of "hockey minds" that love leadership so maybe they would be willing to pay the leadership tax on Bo.

Yeah, I don't give a **** if he's liked in the room, he still needs to go. Just not in a deal like this.

I have no doubts whatsoever that teams would pay a lot and then a premium on top of that for Horvat. I just hope that if it comes to that, the Canucks take quality over quantity.

To me it's a case of value looks fair but doubt the Avs would do it. Barron = EJ's future replacement.
