Winnipeg Jets 2022-23 Trade Schmidt Harkins Toninato for Tanev and Hamonic

Created by: FuelYourJets
Team: 2021-22 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 27, 2021
Published: Dec. 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Trades are to be potentially traded and fit enough for the 2021-2022. With the Purpose of getting Tanev for rest of the Season and the Playoffs going forward, along with the added shutdown physicality from Hamonic on the Right side for the playoffs. This Trade could also be made in the Offseason, which is another possible connection, which is important. Either ways, this could be the Lineup for the 2022-2023 Season and going forward to work with.

This would leave about $850K above $81.5M to use to make enough room to lock up Dubois to $8Mx8 and Copp to $5Mx7. Long term solution importance.
Try to sign Stastny and Hamonic at League minimum(or have spots open at League minimum) and free up $1.1M that could be freed up for our depth players, for a slight raise before a potential big raise... Stastny and Hamonic could get paid a Veterans premium raise too later, with a little extra near the end of their careers. When money is freed up from Wheeler, Hellebuyck, Dillon and potentially DeMelo. Although with DeMelo I think only around $250K-500K could potentially be freed up.

Gus and Vesalainen will get slight bumps in pay.

If the Jets don't get to the conference final they really need to make a core change and to me one core change would be to move on from Copp, if they're not a playoff lock by this trade deadline he should be moved.

Stanley and DeMelo are an amazing pair together, they will do amazing growing their chemistry stronger. Dillon gives Pionk physicality on his Pairing, so he could be a small really good offensive Dman. So yes Morrissey and Hamonic would be paired together. Hamonic has a more defensive shutdown game and adds physicality. Something the Jets defensive structural game needs, don't need too much offense on the back end and leave too many potential holes. We already have more than enough offensive firepower with the Forwards.

The importance of this trade is getting Tanev, moving money and pieces to fit together in the Cap, while adding a more defensive shutdown game and physicality to the Defense. A different plan would have different players.

This is to lock up Dubois to $8M for 8 years. And get Copp signed at $5M, we could potentially trade Copp later when he's not a potential UFA and hardly attractive in a Trade. I only give Gus and Ves 1 year of minimum before $1.1M would be freed up to give them their slight raise before a big raise.(Extra worth it/bigger pay for loyalty.) But we have to sign Svech a slighter raise than Gus and Ves, who also aren't potential UFA's we don't have to worry about for another few years. If we could Sign Dubois at cheaper, then they'll all be paid better. But we risk not locking up Dubois.... So do we want to try lock up Dubois or play potential pathways??

Seattle likely isn't gong to retain on Tanev for 4 seasons for that return and Tanev is too expensive for what he provides for the Jets to consider.

The Schmidt for Hamonic trade is absolutely horrific for Winnipeg. I think Vancouver would have trouble getting anything more than a 4th for Hamonic and he's too expensive for the Jets to bring in as a healthy scratch anyways.

I don't get what your point is, slight raises for Vesalainen and Gus will prevent signing PLD long term??

They're looking at one to two year deals at like $800-925K, there should be space for that and a long term deal for Dubois.
Also I can't imagine Gustafsson isn't a full time Jet next season, maybe they trade Vesalainen but he isn't worth much on his own, unless he's a sweetener in a trade they're better off keeping him, just can't see either guy taking a paycut.

As others have said, Seattle won't retain on Tanev and I doubt they'll trade him anyway since he's a huge fan favorite.

Copp would have some value as a rental, could probably get a 2nd round pick for him at the TDL and again if they aren't looking like a playoff lock by the trade deadline it'll be more then obvious that this core isn't working and some bigger changes are needed, if that's the case I see no point in bringing Copp back.

Acquiring both Schmidt and Dillon backed Chevy into a corner with little cap space to work with so someone that makes at least $3M is going to need to go to make a big PLD extension work.

That Tanev contract is absolutely awful and Schmidt is 10 times better than Hamonic. Neither of these trades make sense for the Jets

Also, you can simply select next season in the drop down menu when you create an AGM

Yeah not sure why we’re moving Schmidt, been super solid with Morrissey. A lot better than hamonic as well. Tanev at 50% retained is not bad, but likely could be money spent elsewhere.

I think it’s becoming more clear day by day that Copp likely is gone after this season. It seems like last year and part of 19-20 was just an outlier in his career. Move him at the TDL if they’re not in a playoff spot.

If Tanev's contract is absolutely awful then whats Lowrys?

I wasn't a Tanev fan when he was a Jet either.

I don't mind Copp but I'm ready to move on, was saying it last off season but something really needs to change with this forward group, moving Copp is as good a place to start with that change as any.

Desperately need to acquire a winger who can work with Lowry and get some production going on that line, need more then just defense and time wasted from that line.

Why is every jets build have a returning player, always a fan favourite or two returning, has the fanbase not realized that the team needs to draft and develop, and not trade for what they have had. Adds need to be something needed going forward, only thing truly needed is a miracle backup that can push helly and makes no money for a few years, and a laine 2.0 that possibly can play in all three zones, but not required as long as he’s good for 15 on the pp. jets need to shine up harkins/svech/vesa and whoever else that needs to be better in future. Still not sold on a longterm 5x5 on copp or whatever that rings in it, probably drives him to the airport if that’s the chance to match. This perfetti might be exactly what the doctor ordered especially if it means a scheifele perfetti ehlers and svech, Connor Dubois. But probably only a dream til vignealt or some other ex moose/jets coach gets resurrected behind the bench.

Berube is a FA coach after this year. If he makes it to the open market he’s the guy they need to be all in on.

As for the rest, 100% agree. Perfetti looks to be exactly what the doctor ordered. He’s a stud, and is only going to get better. If he can improve his skating, watch out.

I think we all suffer from letsgetthebandbacktogetheritis to some degree so that's where that comes from, I know I'd love to see Laine and Armia back with the Jets but I get thats just a pipedream.

Yeah they really need Perfetti to hopefully be able to crack the top six and stay there sooner then later, really think they need to develop Perfetti as a center though and start planning for a post Scheifele team.

I know I'm a broken record but the bottom six needs to be more then just good defensively, time wasters and stationary penalty killers! Need some damn goals from those guys and if they don't have it in them then they need to go and be replaced with some guys who can put the puck in the net more then once every 10 games! (And I'm not sure the Jets bottom six guys even score once every 10 games, I'm probably being generous with that guesstimate.. lol 😆)

Got to drop Lowry to 4c and erase the logjam, and need to add svech/vesa in top 6 and drop stastny and wheeler to 3rd line and spread out scoring and manage minutes. Need a 3c to break through and build a mismatch line. Just a theory, I’m probably just frustrated on getting band back together in a reference to just a western conference final or limited success. I would be forever stuck on something similar if there is ever a perfect storm cup win. Probably similar to the nostalgic way I speak and remember the jays lineups of 92/93 and still tell you the lineup off the top of my head and possibly the 25 man lineup lol. I think jets going to get on a nice run coming asap, couple breaks and no Olympics possibly a blessing, that wild team or colorado going to be some interesting battles to get anywhere though.

So are you suggesting a lineup like this?:

Connor-PLD-Svech/Vesa
Ehlers-Scheifele-Svech/Vesa
Copp-Stastny-Wheeler
Toninato Lowry-Harkins

*I like Gus but leave him in the AHL, let him continue to put up points down there then come up and have the offensive life sucked out of his game by being a 6 minute 4th liner.

I think the Jets are going to have a tough time making the playoffs, likely need a big injury or two on one of the four teams ahead of them for the Jets to get in.
