Kent Hughes first Move

Created by: Sco
Team: 2021-22 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2022
Published: Jan. 24, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think this is the type of trade the Flames need to complete a right shot, right winger, that can score goals playing in your top 9. Calgary will need to see how this would fit into the next years cap situation but it is a very manageable contract.
For Montreal they get a young defensemen that has potential, the big question is if Montreal believes he can reach that mark. The second round pick adds a bit of security and the Pitlick addition is a throw in to make the cap work, I don't think he has a ton of trade value at this moment.
Overall this is a trade Calgary makes right now but from Montreal's perspective a bit tougher with the new GM and if they want to hold out for more value. I personally think we are going to see more sellers this year then in years past.

They need Calgary's 1st more than Välimäki if you ask me.

Habs pass. Decent value but Montreal wants picks and prospects - not Valimaki and Pitlick

If it isn't a 1st, top center prospect or top RHD prospect I wouldn't be interested in moving Toffoli. None of the proposed equals any of that.

valimaki doesnt make sense for MTL when we have Romanov Guhle Norlinder already in the LD
unless valimaki can become a 1RD somehow? then the dcore can beocme

Romanov - Valimaki
Guhle - Mailloux
Norlinder - Brook

I think Valimaki would still be considered a decent prospect, Pitlick has zero value only for cap space move, I could see the flames not trading their first but adding another prospect instead of the second maybe Pelletier, and Montreal sending a 3rd or 4th round pick back.

Fair, but just from Montreal's perspective, we don't have any use for Valimaki.

I don't think Montreal would be super interested in Valimaki in a Toffoli deal. Pitlick is cap a dump and a mid to late 2nd isn't close to being worth Montreal moving Toffoli.

There being more sellers is irrelevant, Montreal has no reason to move Toffoli this season.

Im perfectly ok with that, Calgary would likely prefer to keep Valimaki for next season anyways

You haven't heard lately? If Montreal isn't getting two 1st's and a top 3 prospect they're moving no one at the deadline!
You have probably got the value fairly close here, the fit might not be great for Montreal and with Kylington doing what he's doing this year I don't see the Flames moving on from a young D man who hasn't found his stride yet. Give Valimaki time and he could turn into an absolute stud, you can watch how well he thinks the game, his decision making just isn't there yet.
