my stubborn friend whose a habs fan says that if the habs offered price for Matthews. leafs would "take it in a second". I think prices trade value isn't even close to Matthews. (age difference 19 vs 29, contract status, value of an elite centre, etc...) what is everyone's opinion on this matter? very curious.

Leafs wouldn't do this. They have a franchise Centre. The most important part of a contending team is a #1C

maybe price of 2014 hes very average this year.....i wouldnt even trade price for holtby or bob straight up hes lost the crown of best nhl goalie

i dont think leafs even trade matthews for crosby at this point

Exactly. Price may be the best goalie in the world but if you look at past Cup winning teams, you don't necessarily need that. Montreal wins that trade.

Actually bad trade for both teams, but more so for Toronto
There isn't anyone I would trade Matthews for with the exception of McDavid

very bad for leafs. It would cost Galchenyuk, Serg, Price at the minimum to get Matthews. But honestly I don't think Freddie is much of a drop off from Price - and he isn't due for a huge raise soon

Yours Habs friend is crazy....
Leafs have a bonafide #1 goalie and they aren't trading their #1C for another #1 goalies no matter how good he is.

Price is a free agent in a year. Leafs want Price, they can wait a year and keep Matthews too. Would Edmonton trade McDavid, Sabres Eichel, Calgary Tzachuk, Winnipeg Scheifele for just one year of better goaltending? No.

when looking at this argument all i had to read is "my friend is a has fan" and i already knew he was a complete idiot who overvalues every player on his team... much like a penguins fan. Matthews would never be traded as he is exactly what toronto has needed for years but if he did the only trade packages that would even be considered would include. Connor Mcdavid, Jack Eichel (with other assets) and the list is complete.

This wouldn't happen. Lots of teams put a lot of extra value on a player simply because he was drafted and developed in that organisation. Simply because Matthews is our franchise center and the guy who'll fill up the ACC for years to come, this wouldn't work. Same goes for Marner, and probably Willy too.
