Ambitious deadline

Created by: joshelkin
Team: 2021-22 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 14, 2022
Published: Feb. 14, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Post trades line decisions:

Line 1 - put Whally next to Barzal for the rest of the season to see exactly what you have. Isles may also be able to add a top winger this offseason depending how the roster shakes out. Seeing these 3 together may help you decide which wing to target.

Line 2 - I’m putting Palmieri on RW2 to try and keep his confidence up and play with two good line mates. I truly hope Bailey is in another uniform next season, this could be the line after he’s gone. Want to see what they have

Line 3 - Unless Lou gets nuts, Pageau is your 3C next year, which is fine. Bellows needs to be next to him for a bit to see the chemistry that may be there. Bailey is there for now but hopefully gone in the offseason.

Line 4 - Cizikas should be the only guy safely penciled into the lineup next season. I’d bring Parise back if he’s open to it to play the LW4 role. His effort and scoring touch would be nice next to Casey. Panic plays with an edge and feel like he should have made the team in camp over Johnston anyways. See what he can do on that bottom line. He is under contract next season

1st pair - P&P should have never been broken up. Obvious to put them back together

2nd pair - Let Salo get plenty of experience over the last two months. Very possible he and Dobson become a long term pair anyways over the next couple years.

Third pair - Who cares. Neither will be on the roster next season

Goalie - Ilya gets the 1A workload. Room to bring in a quality 1B in the summer. I like Holtby. Has connection to Trotz/Korn
Trades
1.
NYI
  1. Koskinen, Mikko
  2. 2022 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
1st round pick is top-10 protected. Becomes an unprotected 2023 1st if the pick slides.
EDM
  1. Varlamov, Semyon
Additional Details:
EDM improves their goaltending situation this season and next. Possibly Varly extends beyond that as well.
2.
NYI
  1. 2023 1st round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Isles get another 1st rounder to stock pile. Gathering assets for a potential offseason splash
FLA
  1. Mayfield, Scott
Additional Details:
FLA doesn’t meet the asking price for Chychrun but gets an inexpensive RD that is not a rental. They have the deadline cap space to take Mayfield and he is a cheap replacement for Nutivaara or Gudas (should FLA move on from him)
3.
NYI
  1. Helm, Darren
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Helm for cap purposes. Assumes COL also gets Giroux so they will have another C in house if lines need to change
COL
  1. Parise, Zach
Additional Details:
Parise adds good middle-6 depth and can PK. Comparing Nick Foligno’s trade from last year, this value is fine.
4.
NYI
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Pick can become a 2022 2nd if NSH reaches conference finals and Clutterbuck plays in 50% of playoff games
NSH
  1. Clutterbuck, Cal ($1,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Clutterbuck style of game is playoff hockey. Feels like a good boost to NSH bottom 6 and PK.
5.
NYI
  1. 2022 4th round pick (ANA)
ANA
  1. Greene, Andy
Additional Details:
Ducks owe it to their roster to buy a little bit. Don’t see them selling off major pieces. They’re a young team, Greene could be valuable to their room for a few months and potential playoff run.
6.
NYI
  1. 2022 7th round pick (BOS)
BOS
  1. Chara, Zdeno
Additional Details:
Because Z should end his career in Boston

thats a very easy decline by the avs, Parise is not very good as a 4th liner, Avs wouldnt trade them straight up, nevermind tossing a 2nd round pick with that

I'm so excited for everyone to say "*insert team name's GM* laughs and hangs up". I do think that the Scott Mayfield trade is a bit far fetched for a 1st rounder. Maybe a 3rd or 4th. Everything else has a good reason behind it and makes sense. So long as we keep Nelson, P&P, Barzal, Dobson, Lee, Sorokin and Wahlstrom, I'm all good

Mayfield fetching a 3rd or 4th? That’s crazy talk. Look at what David Savard got and what Ben Chiarot is about to be traded for. Mayfield every bit as good as them and is not a rental. I’d maybe consider a 2nd + 3rd rounder but I think you can get every bit of a 1st

Mayfield > Gudas and Priskie. And again he isn’t a pure rental. Going to want a cheap, reliable defenseman when these extensions start kicking in

Hes not a 2nd round pick better even if he was, Parise has been washed for years. Its min maxing at the very least. You might get a 4th round pick if you are lucky for him

I think you could do Parise for a 4th but Helm and a 2nd is ambitious (as your post title reflects). Helm's contract is $1M vs. Parise's $750K, so they're really only making that move if they NEED to find cap space somewhere - and I think you're only gonna get a 4th for $250K of cap savings.

I'd defer to Avs fans here, but I think you might get better headway trading for Ryan Murray's $2M hit - freeing up $1.25M would definitely be worth a 4th. Murray also would fit a need if you're moving out Chara & Greene - slide him in at LD3 behind Pelech & Salo and let him audition for a role next year.

There is no reason to buy

Verbeek said we are mid rebuild so can’t see us bringing in a 40 year old

A 4th might be too rich but I can see the thought process behind it - I know you can't really quantify experience, but I think it could be a positive development to show the young kids on the Ducks that management sees what you're doing and will give some help to the playoff race they've pushed themselves into. 5th rounders and beyond are lottery tickets anyways, so I think there's nothing wrong with throwing one to the Island to bring in a veteran to upgrade LD3 for the rest of the year for the "playoff push". It's less about making a run this year and more of a morale thing, if that makes sense

Parise used to be an elite top line winger , no sh*t he’s not as good as he once was - but he’s a solid middle 6 wing who drives play at both ends of the ice and is still very good on the PP. isles will probably get a 3rd for him. My point was he’s a lot better than Helm, it isn’t close

Hes not stealing anyones job on the Avs, Helm is already on the outside looking in, Being better to a guy who is the 13th best fwd on a team isnt a 2nd round pick or any sort of additional high pick worth.
Parise is not a solid middle 6 winger anymore. He isnt even a 3rd liner anymore

COL isn’t moving a roster dman out right now they are thin on the back end, and I think Bednar really prefers to have MacDermid on the 4th line at forward where it’s easier to play him then on d. Ideally COL is looking for a bottom 6 forward strong on the pk and good on face offs that’s a rental, and a depth dman that PK’s.

Yeah, I know they're not looking to subtract. Just spitballing based off the fact that they're up tight against the cap as of now and trying to figure out which of their players is most expendable. I'd straight up do Parise for a 4th/5th if they can't find someone who does what he does + takes faceoffs.

Parise is better than compher and jost too by every underlying metric. This is a fact, I don’t care if the avs trade for him, I’m just saying he is better than multiple players the Avs currently have in the bottom 6

I dont think so. Maybe not to Florida given they dont have the need on Defense, but a team that does need him making a playoff run. He brings valuable experience from 2 deep runs and is signed next season for a steal of a price. His value based on his contract and term alone should get a first. If the Isles do deal him which I think is. a mistake they should at least command a first back since you'll then have to fill 2 D positions in offseason instead of just one
