What if they miss

Description
What happens if the oilers miss the playoffs? Does McDavid want out? Would Draisaitl wanna go? Do they blow up the roster to do a massive retool? I’m not to sure, but if I was the GM I would make some moves to get a new top 4 D-man, a new goalie to split time with skinner and get Kassians contract moved

The Sharks and Devils trades are abysmal for the Oilers.

My preference is to buy Kassian out as opposed to spending assets to move his bloated deal.

I disagree. Barrie has regressed and I believe the plan is to lock up Severson long-term.

obviously Barrie is a big downgrade, that's why we're getting two 1sts. From a team that's struggled to have success as well, those picks could be pretty high value.

I doubt Severson wants to re-sign here and if he does he will want way more than he's worth. He'd want like 6M+ on a long term deal and I'm telling him to kick rocks at that price.

Buying out Kassians deal is way to costly, it will last to long and giving up a 3rd for dumping his deal would be the most beneficial way to get his money off the books, I understand doing a buyout but weighing the pros and cons of buyout VS Trade, a trade looks like the most efficient and cost reducing way of getting him off the books

It’s a coin flip, on one hand they do get a potential top 6 winger back who has more upside than Balcers, on top of a middle 6 NHLer already and a potential future NHL backup. I could swap Reimer for Hill but I think they wanna keep Hill and ride him as the starter with Sawchenko as the backup while they go through there rebuild/retool phase

A 3rd rounder isn't enough to take Kassian, and there wouldn't be any asset not even a 7th rounder going the other way.

It isn't terrible but as of now it's subtracting a piece of our top six and our best goalie in exchange for a backup and 2 bottom six forwards. Not really ideal so it's a pretty easy pass.

That is exactly why I sent 2 Firsts, it’s risky but the oilers can’t keep going for low risk, low reward moves. They really need to push for stuff and make this team full on win now mode or McDavid and Darisaitl will be Bye Bye very soon.

It's a $600k penalty next year and the spike in his dead cap is offset by the Sekera hit disappearing. It is the easiest solution by a mile.

The problem with trading him to dump him is you need to consider his remaining cash owed, not his cap hit. The price would realistically be around what Arizona got to take on Ladd. It's going to cost more than downgrading a draft pick by one round. A buyout is almost the only way pain-free way from under Kassian's contract.

Severson at $6 million would be a good contract.

At some point we have to stop collecting futures. We have more than enough future value in our system now. We have to start looking at addressing specific holes like goaltending, a defensive d-man, etc.

McDavid retires, then comes out of retirement and signs with Toronto at league min, but they still lose in the first round vs MTL again because Andrew Hammond > Jack Campbell.
