55 to LAK - 50 Toews comes home

Created by: jimmyjets
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 31, 2022
Published: Mar. 31, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kings grab another 1C to run Kopi, Scheif, Danault, Byfield down the middle and can play Dillon on the top pair with Doughty to handle the defence.

Clarke gives the Jets a RHD prospect with top pair upside, a replacement RHS C that hasn't been able to crack the lineup and a pick.

Jets don't want to give up on the current window so they backfill for 55 departure by bringing a local boy and multi cup winner home going into the last year of his deal. He isn't what he used to be but this clearly puts PLD as 1C and we'd be asking Toews to play 2C for us until Perfetti, Gus, Vilardi, Lucious or Barron can show they deserve a top 6 C spot. He waives because he wants to play for a team that could make the playoffs and the Blackhawks aren't that team.

As you point out, the last thing the Kings need is another center. They certainly aren't sending their best defensive prospect out for another center.

Not a chance Chicago does that even without retaining on Toews. I know it's hard for people to understand the player he was, he is today and he was at the beginning of the season are all different things, and it's hard to put a price on leadership on the ice, but Toews is NOT a cap dump and the risk of Chicago trading him amongst the season ticket holders and to the spirit of the team is way too high to accept a lowball offer.

Los Angeles shouldn't be investing significant assets in acquiring a fourth center. We might be interested in Ehlers or Morrissey, but no other Jet appeals except on a depth basis.

Yeah just doesn’t make sense for LA. Why get another C. No trade to be made between these teams.

The Jets might do the Chicago trade if Scheifele is moved. But the Jets definitely aren't going to sell low on Scheifele and Dillon as you propose here.

I'm sure the Jets would do the Toews trade, it hugely favors the Jets, but Chicago would never do it

That's what people don't get. If toews value really is that low (which it's not even close) the hawks won't bother passing off the entire fan base by trading him.

So everyone hates it. cool cool cool... grimace

LAK don't NEED another 1C but there isn't a team that could compete 1 through 4 with them if they did this. Clarke is their best RHD prospect but they have Doughty locked up for 6 more seasons and Roy for 2 more. The pool would still have Grans, Spence and Durzi so it's not like they wouldn't be able to move the asset. It's not like they NEED Clarke.

I just thought that maybe going into the last year of his contract and knowing the team needs to rebuild he may be open to being sent somewhere else if the Hawks don't intend to extend him and he wants to continue to play. More a thought on how the Jets could fill the hole moving 55 would create on a one year stop gap. I thought a former 1st rounder that may need a change of scenery would be of more appeal than a pick but turns out I was wrong there.

Appreciate all the feedback. I'll start working on a different plan.

That's the better option. Toews isn't worth $5.25 anymore, especially to the Jets, so I would prefer the Jets not use the cap space on him.

I think Toews is worth $5.25M, not anything more then that, but if you're watching him you'd know he's still a beast defensively and realize that from the start of the season until now he's night and day which suggests he's starting to finally feel more like himself. He still says he's not 100% and it will take more time, but 11 points in the last 14 games demonstrates that. I have no doubt with another offseason he's going to put up 55 to 60 points next year (on pace for 43 this year) and coupled with his defense and leadership, I think that's worth $5m.

That could very well be, but with his health issues the past couple seasons and where the Jets are, he's just not someonethey should look to add with the acquisition costand salary factored in.

I won't debate that point. I guess it depends where the jets are at; are they competing or not? They are in that no man's land space

Love scheifele. But with what’s going for the kings. Clarke isn’t being traded. And the be honest, vilardi shouldn’t be traded either…scheifele is Greg though. It’s more age
