Robinson is an excellent 4th liner/Penalty killer with breakaway speed. I would want him in the lineup. Danforth has been great this year and extended for 2. I'd expect him to be a lineup piece or at least deserving of that. Gaunce has gotten minutes due to injury. I expect Gus to be traded and still with that we would be looking at the following players being in the mix that I would rather see play. Laine, Sillinger, Voracek, Bjorkstrand, Johnson, Marchenko, Roslovic, Texier, Jenner, Danforth, Robinson, Chinakhov, Kuraly, Foudy (trade him or give him a shot), Bemstrom (trade him hopefully but you never know).
Either way that is 13F not including Gus. Foudy. Bemstrom. Gaunce isn't in the picture as the person who's development you would be preventing
Robinson is a good 4th liner, great speed and PK, but he doesn't drive play and has hands of steel. He's a bottom-6 forward, and Dadonov would be an upgrade (I like Robinson, and still do want him in the lineup fwiw)
Danforth has been great, but he's also 29. He's a decent middle-6 winger, but he's not a prospect in need of development. If you can upgrade the team and move him down the lineup, you should.
Gus will be traded, but he's a great 2nd-liner.
Dadonov is a winger, so he wouldn't be competing with Sillinger, Roslovic, Jenner, Kuraly, or Foudy directly. (Yes, I realize centers can play wing, so still indirectly competing)
Laine, Voracek, Bjorkstrand, Johnson, Marchenko, Texier, and Chinakhov should all have spots on the wing. That's only 7, with Meyer, Stenlund, Danforth, Bemstrom, and Robinson on the outside looking in (ages this time next year being 25, 26, 30, 23, and 27 respectively). They're not top prospects in need of development, they're mostly bottom-6 plugs that are at or near their potential, all of whom have gotten significant time this year or in the past and frankly haven't proven anything.
Maybe Angle and Voronkov are thrown in that list, but Voronkov I believe is still in Russia another year.
This is better suited as a Jackets Armchair GM probably, but using your cap space to improve a position (even if it's not a need), gain assets now (upgrading the pick), and gain assets in the future (what we'd trade him for at the deadline) makes sense, and I just don't think we have so many prospective wingers that need playing time to develop that it should be prohibitive.
And even if we do need to open up roster spots on the wing, I wouldn't be opposed to making a minor trade to send any of those outside-looking-in players for help at D, where we're thin.
I get what you're saying, but personally just don't think it should be prohibitive if that's what Vegas offers.
