Habs Trade Back From 3

Created by: Chapee44
Team: 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 4, 2022
Published: May 4, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Saw a Habs fan talking about trading back from 3 so now I wanna try it out.
Starting Krebs in the AHL as his underlyings have been poor and he needs to work on his in zone play. Transitionally he is a stud and is one of the best passers I've ever seen but I think he would benefit from some seasoning. Would be a quick callup if needed for injuries etc.
Draft:
3-Simon Nemec
9-Frank Nazar/Jonathan Lekkerimakki
28-Noah Ostlund/Alexander Perevalov

That goalie tandem is a pipe dream. That Nichushkin contract might be the worst idea ever.

I can see them trading back to 9, cant see them trading back to 16. Personally I would only trade up for a center.

That would be cheaper but the idea of Nemec and Nazar is soooo tantalizing lol

and thats why the athletic chart (and all pick chart tried in the past) is complete garbage. they undervalue so much high picks.

Ya that makes 0 sense for the habs.

Right out of the gate Ryan Johnson has no appeal for the habs. Romanov and Guhle are miles ahead of him and theres Edmundson Harris Struble Norlinder etc in the fold. Doesnt move the needle.

Next problem. Its one thing to move from 3 to say 6 or 7 but 16th is multiple player tiers away. The habs have one of the deepest prospect pools in the league and 10 picks in the first 4 rounds. They dont need volume they need top end players. It doesnt fit a need.

Montreal is NOT trading back from 3rd, we need C's and RD and both can be drafted in the top 3. IF we did trade back it would be somewhere inside the top 6 so we can still draft Jiricek or Nemec, unless you are willing to send a top 6 C prospect or top 2 RHD prospect back in the package.

Even by that chart its a really bad trade for Montreal. The hard rule is that if you're trading quantity for quality, the aggregate value has to exceed the quality.

Can't see the Habs trading down further than the top 10, especially in a draft taking place in Montréal.

I don't understand all these crazy scenarios from my peers - don't trade down, don't trade it for Dubois, don't trade it for Lafrenière, just... draft with your pick.

well, i guess the chart is not there if to tell you its a good trade or not, just that the thing your are trading for has equal value, but i see your point.

I do not mind him as a player but he's not worth 7 million. He's scored 30% of his career points this year. I think this is more of a getting fat on a good team then him being a break out player.

Okay. He's always had really good underlying metrics so I see it more as him having a breakout year. He does have 10th overall pedigree and is only 27 so I'd be willing to give him that on short term considering our cap space. Defensively he is fantastic and opens the ice for linemates to take chances too.

I disagree about Krebs. He is ready for the NHL. He will learn and develop best playing at the top level, not in the AHL. Also I think UPL should be the backup next season so long as he is healthy. I really like Nichushkin, but I'd hesitate to give him 3 years at 7mil. Maybe 1 year at that AAV or like 5.5 mil for 3 years. I think a team will overpay him, just don't want that to be us unless its a 1 year deal

What about your first, FLA's first and Josh Bloom, it's an underpay as per the Athletic value so I assume you'll accept? wink

Honestly not a bad offer...
Especially if we're 100% sold on Nemec...
The beauty of having all the draft capital and prospects is that we can make sure we get "our guys".
Always nice to have more darts for a better chance of finding your target, but at the end of the day, top 3 picks have a much higher percentage of hitting.
A pick with a 99% chance of producing a "quality" NHLer versus two picks with a 78% chance and a 30% chance respectively? (per Dobber)
Again, it seems crazy but it's not when you look at the numbers.

I was thinking this way for a long time this season. Still do to an extent. Just wanted to try it with the reasoning.
I also think Peterka needs to be in the NHL next season with his exceptional transition play and us being a rush team.

Peterka will be in the NHL next year, I don't know if he starts the season with us or is the 1st call-up when an injury occurs then sticks around the rest of the season with the Sabres
